These African Christmas beads were first made in Venice exclusively for trade with Africans in the early 1800's. The origin of the term "Christmas beads" is unclear but African traders have said that the colors are happy and Christmas is a happy time. The beads feature all colors of the rainbow, with strong yellows and reds. Various shapes, assorted small sizes and patterns combine to form a single 36" long strand. They have also been called "Love Beads" because they resemble strands worn by hippies in the 1960s and 70s. There are approximately 400 beads per strand and the beads vary in size from 1x2mm to 6x5mm.
These striking red & black seeds of the Abrus Precatorius plant are commonly called prayer beads (also known as Crab's eye, rosary peas, John Crow Beads, precatory beans, and Indian licorice) and are used to make necklaces in many cultures. They are mostly used for rosaries and are chosen for their consistent size and bright appearence. They can also be used to simulate lady-bugs and are festive decorations for Christmas wreaths. These beads come pre-strung on 100 piece strands with the holes already drilled.
