Maximize Your Marketing Efforts for Summer!

As summer is quickly approaching, you have potential to grow your business by taking advantage of a few summer seasonal marketing ideas. Here are some great things your business can do to maximize your marketing:

- Host a Cookout: This is a great way to bring employees, clients and potential clients together in one setting. By offering incentives to those who attend, you will give them good reasons to frequent your business over summer.  Utilize your member benefits and advertise your event on our online Calendar!

 - Summer-ize Your Marketing Materials:
Whether it's your weekly newsletter or company website, look for ways to incorporate summer themes. You can also include summer recipes, fashion tips, and/or business specials to gain the interest of your clients.  Your Chamber is happy to promote your company's happenings in the Member News section of the Weekly Update.  Send it our way for some more exposure!

Hold a Contest: Host summer-themed giveaways and contests to drive foot traffic and/or internet traffic. The prizes don't have to be big, but they need to be rewarding enough for the customer to care.  Utilize you Chamber's Hot Deals section for this and you'll reach a broader audience.

Summer can be a great time for your business to boost sales and have fun around the office. Take advantage of these few months and make the most out of your upcoming summer.  And don't forget to utilize the services offered by your Chamber.  We're always happy to help you grow your business. Regional Planning vs. Local Control:  The Role of the Metropolitan Council

Up until the last few months, you may have never heard or known much about the Metropolitan Council.  Today however, the regional policy-making body and planning agency is making media headlines.  In fact, so many questions surround the Met Council these days that the legislature has created a bi-partisan sub-committee to address accountability and transparency issues.   The Council's mission is to foster efficient and economic growth for a prosperous metropolitan region.

State law requires the Council to adopt a long-range plan for the seven-county Twin Cities region every 10 years. Thrive MSP 2040 is the latest vision of the Met Council for the seven-county region.  The plan sets the policy foundation for the systems and policy plans that are developed by the Council in the areas of transportation, water resources, regional parks, and housing, major issues facing each and every local community in Dakota County. Register here.
Panelists include:

Adam Duininck, Met Council Chair

Adam Duininck was appointed chair of the Metropolitan Council by Gov. Mark Dayton in January 2015. He is the 14th chair of the Council since its creation by the Legislature in 1967, and the first to serve full time.  Duininck, a native of Willmar, was first appointed to the Council in 2011.

Commissioner Tom Egan, Dakota County, Chair

Commissioner Tom Egan currently serves as Chair of the Board of Commissioners for Dakota County.  He was first elected in 2005 and prior to that served as mayor of Eagan for nine years following his service on the city council.

Representative Laurie Halverson, District 51B, Subcommittee on Met Council Accountability and Transparency

Representative Halverson was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2012 and graduated from the College of St. Catherine, earning her B.S. in Political Science.  Prior to serving in the Minnesota Legislature, she worked for several years at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota.

Independent Analysis Shows Transportation Funding Needs are Overstated and Unclear

According to an independent analysis commissioned by several business trade associations, Minnesota's long-term funding needs for state roads and bridges as identified by the Transportation Finance Advisory Committee (TFAC) may be overstated by as much as $4.5 billion over the next 20 years due to an overly high inflation assumption.  The analysis raises a number of important questions for policy-makers and stakeholders to consider.  Your Chamber identified transportation as one of its priorities for the 2015 legislative session and has been working with several partners to ensure investment in a safe, reliable, efficient, and multi-modal transportation system in Minnesota occurs.  Without it, our members cannot get their goods to market; their employees to work; or, their customers to their doors.  We agree that there is likely a need for some additional investment in the state's transportation infrastructure.  However, before raising new revenues, we must first agree on the nature and level of investment that is needed.  Additionally funding options other than a tax increase must also be considered including the general fund, value capture and greater efficiencies.

South Metro Young Professionals Recap: Find the Humor

On Wednesday, April 22nd, the South Metro Young Professionals met for their monthlymeeting.  This month's speaker, Andy Weisberg, spoke on "The Power of Humor in the Workplace."  Andy began his talk by introducing the crowd to several statistics regarding the stress of the workplace.  Andy reported that statistically, most heart attacks happen between 8:00am- 9:00am on M onday morning. He noted that this can easily be associated with the stress employees face returning to work after the weekend.

Andy encouraged members to realize their full potential.  He explained that as working professionals, we don't need to dread life in the workplace.  Instead, treat the workplace as an outlet for creativity and focus on enjoying time spent doing so.  It is then that employees will find themselves truly happy with what they're doing.
