Learn more about the Minnesota Action Network here as they work to resolve issues that matter to Minnesotan workers. Also be sure to vote in the primary on August 12th, and encourage your employees to participate as well. We all want to make Minnesota a better place to grow our businesses and provide for our employees. Our work begins by electing those individuals who will advance pro-jobs policies at the Capitol.

Quick Poll

Last week, we asked our members if they planned to vote in the upcoming Primary Election on Tuesday, August 12. 80% answered "yes", 10% answered "no" and "not sure".

Did you Know?

The month of August is often referred to as the "dog days of summer" but not because of pet pooches. It has to do with the star Sirius, also known as the dog star, which rose at the same time as sunrise during the month of August in ancient Roman times. (Source: TimesDispatch.com)

Project Raises Concerns for Dakota County Businesses

The West St. Paul City Council will be meeting on Monday, August 11 at 6:00 p.m. to take action on two key issues that could impact the Dakota County business community. City staff is seeking approval by the City Council for final design of the Robert Street streetscape project as well as authorization to seek bids for construction of Phase I roadway improvements.

Should both projects move forward as presented, total costs (Phase 1 only and Streetscape) will exceed $32.2 million.  As your business advocate, Dakota County Regional Chamber is concerned that these projects will move forward without all funding mechanisms being identified.  Often times, funding for projects such as these are passed down to business owners through increased local property taxes, special assessments (one-time, ongoing maintenance), and other fees.

We hope West St. Paul businesses take the time to attend the City Council meeting and contact your local elected officials so your voice can be heard.

(MCC) Offers New Business Grants

The Minnesota Chamber (MCC) has tailored a new grant program that allows businesses to seek up to $4,000 for pre-qualified energy efficiency and waste management projects.  Program applications and full details for the program can be found here.

City Provides Resources to help with Mall Opening Weekend Traffic

With the addition of the new Eagan Outlet Mall, traffic analysis suggests possible impacts nearby during the opening week beginning August 14. The City and the mall officials have been planning ahead to deal with likely traffic conditions. To plan your route and find out more on how this will affect you, please visit www.cityofeagan.com/abouttheRoute. Here, you can subscribe to email updates, subscribe to "About the Route" to get the most updated information, see parking and area information, and much more.

Zip Rail Comment Deadline Extended

In response to public interest, the Minnesota Department of Transportation extended the comment period to Aug. 22 on a plan for passenger rail service between the Twin Cities and Rochester. MnDOT is preparing a Tier I Environmental Impact Statement in cooperation with the Federal Railroad Administration and the Olmsted County Regional Railroad Authority to evaluate passenger rail alternatives for the Rochester-Twin Cities Rail Corridor Investment Plan, also known as the Zip Rail.
