A group of eight Minnesota engineering and environmental consulting firms used the spirit of competition to fuel a drive that yielded over $112,000 and nearly three tons of food for food shelves around the state. The effort was the second annual collaboration between firms that are usually friendly competitors and included American Engineering Testing, Inc., Barr Engineering Company, LHB, SEH, SRF Consulting Group, Inc., TKDA, Wenck, and WSB & Associates, Inc. The competition rules were simple - donations of non-perishable food items or cash could be made to charitable organizations of each firm's choice, and one pound of food was considered equivalent to one dollar donated. Because the firms varied in size from 120 Minnesota employees to over 600, results were calculated per employee. After four weeks, WSB & Associates was named the winner, with combined food and cash donations averaging $85 per employee - for a total of $17,000. The drive was deemed a success by all participants because total donations increased over 20 percent from last year's total. Donations were made to food shelves and charities statewide, including The Emergency Food Network, Hunger Solutions Minnesota, Second Harvest Heartland and Second Harvest Northern Lakes Foodbank, Channel One Regional Food Bank, Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People, Catholic Charities, Churches United in Ministry, and Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners.
