Dear Market Patrons and Friends,

Did you know that your Lexington Farmers' Market  has a token system?  If you forget cash, stop by the information booth at any of our markets.  The LFM can turn your debit card (with a pin), your EBT card, or even a check into market tokens.  Debit/check tokens can be used like cash, while EBT tokens must follow federal guidelines for purchases.  There is a $1 fee if you choose to use your debit card, but with checks or EBT there is no fee.

See you at market,

Seasonally Inspired Recipe:
Strawberry Rhubarb Sorbet

Jennifer Farley at SavorySimple couldn't decide between a strawberry rhubarb ice cream or sorbet, so she developed recipes for both.  I've included the sorbet recipe as the Seasonally Inspired recipe this week, but you can check out her blog for the the ice cream version.

I love the sweet and tangy melange of strawberry and rhubarb. It is comforting and invigorating.  And as the temperature outside rises, it's good to have a recipe that can help you cool down.

Ingredients

Strawberry Rhubarb Puree

  • 1.5 stalks rhubarb, ends trimmed and sliced
  • 1 cups sliced hulled strawberries
  • 1/8 cup water
  • 1/8 cup sugar

Strawberry Rhubarb Sorbet

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • juice of 1 small lemon
  • 1¼ cup strawberry rhubarb puree
Directions

Prepare Strawberry Rhubarb Puree

  1. In a large saucepan, combine the rhubarb, strawberries, water and sugar over low heat. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until the rhubarb and strawberries have broken down and the liquid is thick, 10-15 minutes.

Prepare Strawberry Rhubarb Sorbet

  1. Add sugar and water to a medium saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil and allow it to simmer until the sugar is completely dissolved, approximately 5 minutes.
  2. Remove from the heat and allow it to cool briefly, then stir in 1¼ cups of the strawberry rhubarb puree. Allow to chill completely in the refrigerator. Prepare sorbet in an ice cream machine according to manufacturer's instructions.
Ingredients currently available at the LFM
  • Rhubarb
  • Strawberries

Bleugrass Chevre {Facebook}{Website}

Fayette County

From 4/14

We are loaded with fresh chèvre and feta this week.  Tomatoes and basil are abundant at the market now, so what could taste more summery than a Caprese salad with feta or mozzarella?  We alternate slices of tomatoes with slices of feta on a big platter, add basil leaves, then drizzle all with Stuarto's fig balsamic and EVOO.  We could eat this every day with crusty bread or Carla's pretzel bread.

Our grilled cheese sandwiches (with market cheeses) are becoming legendary for both breakfast and lunch.  Bacon from Hood's Heritage Hogs turns them instantly into breakfast.  We even grilled a few with fresh sliced tomatoes last week.   Just follow your nose to our panini grill sizzling away.

Last Saturday we started our market at around 38 degrees......this week we will be celebrating the official start of summer!!  Crazy weather!  A "blackberry winter".  The other thing that happened last Saturday is that our power went out on the farm around 1:30AM!  It's the first time in 15 years of farmers' market that we have had to get up and get ready to go without electricity!  We were doing fine until Leo remembered that he didn't have any coffee ground!  Now a non-electric coffee mill is on the wish list!  We don't know what the cause was for the outage.  No storms or even wind!  Just a little test, I guess!

Are you planning something special for the long weekend?  Maybe a neighborhood cookout?  Come see us for local grass fed/grass finished BEEF STEAKS, BURGER, or BRATS;  local pastured PORK CHOPS, BACON for your burgers or pork BRATS or Italian Sausage.  Local LAMB CHOPS, RACKS, or Lamb BURGER too! We can fix you up with local CHEESES, local ASPARAGUS, local artisan BREADS and PASTRIES, and even local CORN MEAL, GRITS, and TORTILLA CHIPS!

We'll have more of our own beautiful SPRING MIX (today's photo) as well as Vibrant Greens hydroponic GREENS.  We'll be making our first cutting of fresh CILANTRO this week!  I love the first small tender leaves!  You can even eat the stems!

So......Roland's got the tomatoes, we've got the cilantro, BABY GREEN GARLIC, and our PEPPER POWDERS so you can make a fresh salsa to go with the tortilla chips!

We'll be getting lots of GARLIC BAGELS from Sunrise Bakery, made with our own Music Garlic!  They make a great breakfast topped with Bleugrass Chevre's soft, spreadable goat cheese!  If something sweeter is more up your alley, we'll have those great big CINNAMON BUNS, CHOCOLATE CROISSANTS, BLACKBERRY or LEMON/LAVENDER MUFFINS, and plain CROISSANTS.  We'll have lots of varieties of artisan BREADS too, to go with your weekend meals or for next week's school lunches.

We've still got some potted HERBS for your garden, but supplies are getting low.  So many folks lost perennial herbs over the harsh winter this year!

Have any of you seen hummingbirds yet?  We've been waiting a long time now....usually they arrive on or around Earth Day, but we haven't seen any!  Please let us know if you have!  We're starting to worry!

If you need something special for this weekend or any time, just drop us an email!

As you relax this weekend and enjoy an extra day off from work, take some time to remember those servicemen and women who have given their lives defending our country, and send a thank you up to the ones who are serving now.

See you this weekend!

Boone Creek Creamery {Facebook}{Website}

Fayette County

We will have our cheeses at the Market this weekend.

Our cheese is made from all natural JD Country Milk, a family owned Mennonite farm in Logan County. The cows are pasture grazed and never given any antibiotics or hormones. Instead they are fed a vitamin enriched diet and all the grass they can eat. The milk is not homogenized and is pasteurized at just 145 degrees, then quickly cooled to preserve the natural flavor and enzymes that Mother Nature intended. We think the milk tastes better because the cows are happy.

You won't see hydraulic presses and fancy modern equipment in our micro-creamery. Instead, we make our cheeses by hand using traditional European techniques to protect the delicate curds. This is a lot more work and very time consuming, but we believe it creates better cheeses with rich complex flavors. We hope you agree.

This week we will have over a dozen different cheeses available. Stop by and sample our Butterkase (Amish Butter Cheese), Mama Mia, Sassy Redhead, Tuscan Sun, Smoked Cheddar and of course our bourbon infused Kentucky Derby. Oh, and don't miss the Caerphilly, a tangy traditional Welsh coal miners cheese.

Thanks for your support. See you at the market.

Hood's Heritage Hogs {Website}

Robertson County

Hood's Heritage Hogs will have the locally famous 1" thick pork chops this week! I could go on and tell you about our all-naturally cured bacon in three styles and the forest fed/Bleugrass Chèvre finished Brats, but I've already said "pork chops"...so you're no longer paying attention. See y'all Wednesday at Commonwealth and Saturday at Cheapside!

Kentucky Lamb {Facebook}

Washington County

This week KyLamb will have shanks, ground, steaks and roasts. Oh yeah, chops too.  Sorry, no sausage yet but it'll be announced here first!  Happening this week end is the Kentucky Fiber Festival at Masterson Station Park AND the Bluegrass Stock Dog Trials.  If you've never seen a stock dog at work it's worth it to see.  Also, Tim Farmer is going to be creating something with KyLamb loin chops on Sunday at the festival.  See you Saturday.

Magic Beans Coffee Roasters {Website}{Facebook}

Fayette County

We have two fantastic limited edition coffees available this weekend. One is an incredibly well balanced coffee from Finca La Nube in Ecuador. This microlot coffee is from a single farm in this country that exports only 100 containers of high quality arabica beans per year. The second coffee is from Burundi, a country whose exports have in the past been primarily low-grade commodity-grade coffees, but have recently developed a burgeoning high quality coffee economy. This particular coffee comes from a farmers co-op and is a fully washed and sun-dried bean. Both are excellent and we would love to chat with you more about them at market!

Our cold brew concentrate continues to sell out each week,

so please pre-order if you would like to guarantee a bottle at http://www.magicbeanscoffee.com/shop/cold-brew-concentrate/. You can pick up your order at either the Saturday or Sunday market.

As always, we will be brewing your favorite coffees to order by the cup as well. Looking forward to seeing you!

Quarles Farm {Website}{Facebook}

Shelby County

The weather is finally starting to break and we're starting to see some sun and warmer weather.  A very welcome sight indeed.  The lambs, kids and young calves are enjoying the warmer days and so are we.  The lettuce and other vegetables seeded in the ground a few weeks ago are sprouting and it appears the growing season is on the way.

While waiting on our veggies to mature, we still have coolers full of beef, lamb and goat.  The tables are full of canned goods such as corn relish, squash pickles, green tomato relish, which is also known as chow chow, and a wide selection of interesting jams.  There's also breads that aren't your usual zucchini bread.  Lemon poppy seed zucchini as well as blueberry poppy seed and many other favorites are available each week.

Give a leg of lamb a try for Easter instead of ham.  Good local lamb that is carefully tended to give you the most flavor in each bite.  All our animals graze the fields daily and have access to wholesome grass to provide a succulent main dish for your meals.  Our goat or lamb is a wonderful change from some of the more readily available meats.

Stop by Cheapside on Saturday or Southland on Sunday for breakfast, brunch or lunch. Have a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit or bacon and eggs. We're grilling burgers, brats and jumbo hot dogs all made with our beef and containing no fillers. It's all beef and all good.

Check us out at our website at quarlesfarm.com or visit us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Quarlesfarm?ref=hl   We try to keep folks up to date on what we're doing and how you're food's grown. Our food is your local connection to healthy eating.

Gleaning Amounts in Pounds

June 2010-Present  364,143

Tally 2014                  28,566

Glean KY began four years ago when three community members met and decided to do something about food waste and food insecurity in Kentucky. When looking at the statistics, 17% of the population in Fayette County is considered 'food insecure,' meaning they do not always know where their next meal is coming from, and yet 51% of fruits and vegetables are never eaten at the end of the production process. With that knowledge, they began collecting excess produce from the Lexington Farmer's Market, and trying to find links between local farms and local hunger programs that might need the food. They gleaned 37,000 pounds of food that year, and now have gleaned over 357,000 pounds since they began, delivering to over 51 hunger programs in Fayette and surrounding counties.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

The University of Kentucky (UK) is celebrating 50 years of lifelong learning throughout 2014.  In the late 50's, UK President Herman L. Donovan identified lifelong learning as a value that is deep, essential, and enduring in human life.

One of the first such programs in the nation, learning opportunities began at UK with an academic tuition waiver for adults 65+.  Courses, just for the joy of learning, were added and have evolved into the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UK.

Today, more than 1,500 Kentucky older adults annually find intellectual stimulation, physical activity, creative outlets, and social engagement in our programs.  Learning opportunities and events vary each semester in topic and format.   For more information on upcoming 50th Anniversary events and/or OLLI at UK program offerings, please visit our website at www.uky.edu/OLLI or contact the OLLI Office at  (859)257-2656

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the

Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal online at www.wuky.org or use our phone app. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3p.m. you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Rock and Roots", featuring a wide variety of artists from Black Keys to Norah Jones to Avett Brothers. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the Grateful Dead Hour, and Woodsongs. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for your support.
