Dear Market Patrons and Friends,

In just 1 week all the Lexington Farmers' Market locations will be open. Go ahead and write them on your calendar.  You can find us 5 days a week.  Stop by Saturday market for the festive atmosphere.  Try Sunday for its small-town market feel.  Need a snack or something to make your midweek lunch or dinner pop?  Stop by on Tuesday or Thursday to grab that special something.  Too busy or too tired to make it to a weekend market or Tuesday/Thursday? Release stress at our Wednesday evening Walking Club & Market at the University of Kentucky starting May 14.

Seasonally Inspired Recipe:
Personal Pizzas

From Stephanie:

Inspired by the 100 Days of Real Food Blog, personal pan pizzas will take on local flavor tomorrow at the Winburn Community Action Center. From 4-5pm area students and their families will gather in the Winburn Community Garden, learn about local agriculture, and use local ingredients to create their own personal pizzas. We think these pizzas are such a fun way to introduce kids to seasonal flavors, we wanted to make sure you had a copy. If you get a chance to try this out in your kitchen, snap a picture and send it to us!

Ingredients
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tsp yeast (active dry yeast)
  • 2 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • Tomato sauce
  • Grated mozzarella cheese
  • Cooking oil spray
  • Other desired toppings such as sausage, mushrooms, vegetables, Parmesan cheese, pesto, goat cheese, arugula, olives, etc.

Directions
  1. Drop the yeast into the 1-cup of warm water and let it go to work for a few minutes. It should foam up a little bit. Stir the salt and olive oil into the yeast mixture.
  2. Pour the flour and yeast mixture into a food processor with a dough blade or into a mixer with a dough hook and turn on the machine. (You can also mix up this dough by hand.)
  3. You should end up with a ball chasing itself around the food processor. If the dough is too dry add warm water a teaspoon at a time and if it is too wet add flour 1 teaspoon at a time.
  4. Remove the ball from your food processor and knead into a smooth ball. Put the dough into a large ziplock bag or bowl covered with plastic wrap (put a touch of olive oil in and coat the inside of the bag/bowl first) then leave it in fridge for as little as 1 hour or overnight depending on how much time you have. It will rise on its own in the fridge.
  5. When ready to make the pizza preheat the oven to 500 degrees F. Use a rolling pin to roll it out into the desired shape (don't make it too thin!). Put the flat pizza dough on a baking sheet that has been sprayed with cooking oil. Top the dough with homemade or organic tomato sauce, cheese and other toppings of your choice. Bake in an oven for about 8 - 10 min. or until crust and cheese are golden brown.

Ingredients currently available at the LFM
  • Olive Oil
  • Cheese
  • Various Toppings such as arugula, asparagus, ramps, or chorizo the ideas are endless!

Vendor Updates

In addition to these vendors, many additional farmers and vendors will be present at one or all of the markets!

Bleugrass Chevre {Facebook}{Website}

Fayette County

We have more chvre than ever, so come and get some while the milk is flowing.  And don't forget that it freezes well.  We are actually one of the last vendors to leave the market now, much better than running out early like last season.  And we are planning to re-introduce our dairy free, additive-free sorbet soon.

We've been selling more early-morning grilled cheese sandwiches (It might be the outrageous aroma of real butter and sourdough bread coming from our panini press on these chilly mornings), and having to scurry to cheese and bread vendors for backup supplies for lunch, but we will be loaded with cheeses and breads this week.  So come for breakfast or lunch; we promise you will love our sandwiches (and our pickles too!).

Bacon from Hood's Heritage Hogs (fattened up with our gallons and gallons of leftover whey, so it all comes back to us!) make it a breakfast sandwich.  How's that for sustainability?

See you at the market and Happy Mother's Day.  (See what our goat moms have to put up with?  Moms of all species have a lot in common!)

People have all kinds of different relationships with their Moms.  I happen to be one of the really lucky ones whose Mom is also her friend.  My Mom turned 91 in February!  I don't get to see her as often as I'd like, but she is with me in my heart every day.  Happy Mothers' Day, Mom!!  Here's a photo of our Sweet Rockets for you!

There are so many special events happening at this time of year!  Mothers' Day Sunday and graduations from Colleges, University and High Schools every weekend!  Seems to me like a good time for a party!  And what could be better than fresh local foods to serve your guests?

ASPARAGUS has hit, and we have a terrific recipe for you on our Facebook page (link above).  Crispy Baked Asparagus Fries.  We love it steamed with just a squirt of fresh lemon, too!  Our philosophy for asparagus is.....eat it at least one meal a day (2 or 3 times is even better!) while it's in season, then wait til it rolls around next year!

We've got a suggestion for a really quick and easy dish that would make a great addition to party buffet table, or a side dish for your dinner any time!

Garlic Scape Pesto Potato Salad

2 LB potatoes of your choice, skin on, cut into 1" cubes

2 stalks celery cut into - " pieces

1 medium onion, chopped

Garlic Scape Pesto, to taste

Balsamic vinegar- several large dashes, or to taste.

Boil potato pieces approx.. 8 minutes or until slightly crunchy.  Pour water off and while potatoes are hot, add celery and onion.  Mix.

Let stand covered for 10 minutes.

Mix in Garlic Scape Pesto to coat pieces, and splash with balsamic vinegar.  Salt and pepper to taste.  Extra good with a bit of cayenne pepper.

Serve either warm or chilled.

We can supply you with all the fixin's for your parties, from PORK, BEEF, and LAMB to beautiful SALAD GREENS and BABY GREEN GARLIC, CHEESES and BREADS, and even locally produced CORN MEAL, GRITS and TORTILLA SHELLS!!  Need a hostess gift?  How about some nice handmade SOAPS from Stone Cross Farm?  Or a cute little bottle of our "knock-your-socks-off" GARLIC POWDER?

Come see us Saturday or Sunday and look around!  If we don't have what you're looking for, we probably know where to send you for it!

Boone Creek Creamery {Facebook}{Website}

Fayette County

We will have our cheeses at the Market this weekend.

Our cheese is made from all natural JD Country Milk, a family owned Mennonite farm in Logan County. The cows are pasture grazed and never given any antibiotics or hormones. Instead they are fed a vitamin enriched diet and all the grass they can eat. The milk is not homogenized and is pasteurized at just 145 degrees, then quickly cooled to preserve the natural flavor and enzymes that Mother Nature intended. We think the milk tastes better because the cows are happy.

You won't see hydraulic presses and fancy modern equipment in our micro-creamery. Instead, we make our cheeses by hand using traditional European techniques to protect the delicate curds. This is a lot more work and very time consuming, but we believe it creates better cheeses with rich complex flavors. We hope you agree.

This week we will have over a dozen different cheeses available. Stop by and sample our Butterkase (Amish Butter Cheese), Mama Mia, Sassy Redhead, Tuscan Sun, Smoked Cheddar and of course our bourbon infused Kentucky Derby. Oh, and don't miss the Caerphilly, a tangy traditional Welsh coal miners cheese.

Thanks for your support. See you at the market.

Our roasts this week will include our Ethiopia Yirgachefe - a consistent favorite - and our Guatemala Huehuetenango as a dark roast.

Quarles Farm {Website}{Facebook}

Shelby County

The weather is finally starting to break and we're starting to see some sun and warmer weather.  A very welcome sight indeed.  The lambs, kids and young calves are enjoying the warmer days and so are we.  The lettuce and other vegetables seeded in the ground a few weeks ago are sprouting and it appears the growing season is on the way.

While waiting on our veggies to mature, we still have coolers full of beef, lamb and goat.  The tables are full of canned goods such as corn relish, squash pickles, green tomato relish, which is also known as chow chow, and a wide selection of interesting jams.  There's also breads that aren't your usual zucchini bread.  Lemon poppy seed zucchini as well as blueberry poppy seed and many other favorites are available each week.

Give a leg of lamb a try for Easter instead of ham.  Good local lamb that is carefully tended to give you the most flavor in each bite.  All our animals graze the fields daily and have access to wholesome grass to provide a succulent main dish for your meals.  Our goat or lamb is a wonderful change from some of the more readily available meats.

Stop by Cheapside on Saturday or Southland on Sunday for breakfast, brunch or lunch. Have a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit or bacon and eggs. We're grilling burgers, brats and jumbo hot dogs all made with our beef and containing no fillers. It's all beef and all good.

Check us out at our website at quarlesfarm.com or visit us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Quarlesfarm?ref=hl   We try to keep folks up to date on what we're doing and how you're food's grown. Our food is your local connection to healthy eating.

Don't let a few showers keep you away from Saturday's Market! It's the perfect chance to come down and scoop up some fabulous, LOCAL and FRESH treats for your favorite ladies! We have some beautiful flowers this week ... and we can deliver them locally!

- Great BIG, FRAGRANT stems of LILIES - soft, luscious pink 'Sorbonne' and the stunningly beautiful white 'Rialto.'

- LILY PLANTS - for a long-lasting gift that also has instant gratification, delight your favorite lady with a bouquet of lilies and accompanied by our ready-to-bloom lily plants. Surprise her by planting these Oriental and Hybrid Lilies in her garden and she'll think of you when they bloom this summer and every summer for years to come.

- The most unique gift for anyone who loves fragrant, heirloom flowers all summer - in January we planted our big 14" painted Italian clay pots with either ENGLISH SWEET PEAS or CLIMBING NASTURTIUMS. Kept outside in a spot with morning sun, they will bloom their little heads off through the summer ... and we have complete growing instructions to go along with them. The more you cut, the more they bloom! These are very substantial pots (with 5' bamboo stakes) so if you'd like us to deliver them, we can do that for you locally.

- LAVENDER 'PHENOMENAL' - this all-new variety has a higher oil content and stronger disease resistance than any other Lavender. We sourced it directly from the grower in Washington state and have planted it in a special clay 'rose' pot, surrounded by living clump moss, just for Mother's Day. Totally unique and (we think), guaranteed to please! The lavender can be kept in its pot on a sunny patio or kitchen window, or planted outside.

Please give us a call (859-771-2085) or message us on Facebook if you have questions or would like to reserve any of our flowers or plants. We grow 100% of all of them!

Thanks so much for your support of your local farmers!

- Charlie Hendricks, Elizabeth Montgomery and Val Schirmer

Food News & Chews TV Show with Chef Jeremy Ashby & Sylvia Lovely, Sundays 11p on Fox 56 WDKY, filmed an episode of the weekly show at Lexington Farmers Market.  Chef Jeremy and Sylvia toured the market, discussed food news topics and chatted with vendors while collecting ingredients for the cooking segment.  Chef & Sylvia have a great conversation with Jeff Dabbelt, Executive Director of LFM.  They cover local sourcing of food, what is available year round and the positive impact of spending food dollars with local producers.  Jeff, Sylvia and Chef all agree farmers markets build community.  In our cooking segment, Chef makes a simple dish in under five minutes with ingredients he collected that morning in the market.  Tune in for a taste of the sights and sounds of the Lexington Farmers Market!  Click Food News & Chews: Lexington Farmers Market Edition to view the episode!

Gleaning Amounts in Pounds

June 2010-Present  364,143

Tally 2014                  28,566

Glean KY began four years ago when three community members met and decided to do something about food waste and food insecurity in Kentucky. When looking at the statistics, 17% of the population in Fayette County is considered 'food insecure,' meaning they do not always know where their next meal is coming from, and yet 51% of fruits and vegetables are never eaten at the end of the production process. With that knowledge, they began collecting excess produce from the Lexington Farmer's Market, and trying to find links between local farms and local hunger programs that might need the food. They gleaned 37,000 pounds of food that year, and now have gleaned over 357,000 pounds since they began, delivering to over 51 hunger programs in Fayette and surrounding counties.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so pleasepledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
