Market News

Dear Market Patrons and Friends,

Last week I promised that I would let you know the significance of August 23. We are proud to announce that it is the date for our 2014 Taste of the Farm Dinner.   This is a wonderful occasion to invite your friends and family to or an important business client or even that special someone you've been gaining the courage to ask out.  If you've been to this annual dinner before, we are updating it this year to make it even bigger and better than ever. As we make more information public, you'll be the first to know!

Also the Walking Club is quickly approaching and we hope to see all of you at our first Wednesday Lexington Farmers' Market at UK on May 14.  The market opens at 3PM with the Walking Club starting around 4:30PM.

As we enter into the summer season, so much is happening in Lexington and with the Lexington Farmers' Market, I want to thank you for spending your time with us.

See you at market,

Josh England

Assistant Manager

Lexington Farmers' Market

InYourCommunity In Your Community

Why should you shop at the Lexington Farmers' Market? Students at Winburn Middle School know why! Last week, members of the Winburn Middle Food Club made posters to put up in the school lobby promoting local food and farmers markets. The students also enjoyed acting out local and global food supply chains and examining the differences.

Personal pan pizzas will take on local flavor next Thursday, May 8th at the Winburn Community Action Center. From 4-5pm area students and their families will gather in the Winburn Community Garden, learn about local agriculture at all scales, and use local ingredients to create their own personal pizzas! We are in need of rolling pins for this class; if you have an extra one in your kitchen, let us know!

Seasonally Inspired Recipe:
Hot Brown Burger

With the Derby this weekend, it is a perfect excuse to eat a Hot Brown. This burger approach also permits you to enjoy the HB but in a mobile, Derby Party friendly manner.

This recipe is based on a recipe by Paula at  Call Me PMC.  I've made some adjustments to best suit what's seasonally available at the market right now and simplify the recipe.

Ingredients
  • 1 lb ground  turkey (or maybe lamb)
  • 1/2 cup onion, died and caramelized
  • 1/4 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp parsley
  • 1/4 tsp ground red pepper
  • 6 thin slices ham
  • 6 slices bacon, cooked crisp
  • 6 slider buns
  • 2 tomatoes, sliced
  • Lettuce, 6 leaves
  • Sauce (i.e. a Gravy with Cheese)
    • 2 Tablespoons Butter
    • 2 Tablespoons Flour
    • 2.5 cups Milk
    • 1 cup cheese (a mix of Cheddar or similar cheese and Parmesan in a 3:1 ratio)
    • Black Pepper

Directions
  1. For the Sauce: Place the butter in a medium heat skillet, whisk in the flour and allow to cook for approximately 2 minutes or until it begins to turn golden brown.
  2. Drop the heat to medium and slowly whisk in the milk. Allow to slightly simmer.
  3. Whisk in the cheeses and pepper, remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Mix the caramelized onions, herbs, and spices with the ground meat. Divide into 6 equal burgers.
  5. Heat a skillet to medium heat. Cook burger for about 4 and a half minutes on each side. During the last few minutes of cooking, stack the ham and bacon on the burger to allow them to warm through.
  6. While burgers are cooking toast buns.
  7. Assemble the meats, sauce, tomatoes, and lettuce on the bun and enjoy.

Ingredients currently available at the LFM
  • Ham
  • Bacon
  • Onion
  • Buns
  • Lettuce
  • Tomatoes
  • Cheese
  • Parsley

Vendor Updates

In addition to these vendors, many additional farmers and vendors will be present at one or all of the markets!

Bleugrass Chevre {Facebook}{Website}

Fayette County

We'll have plenty of flavors of fresh chèvre, plus our "confetti" decorated rounds with edible flowers for your Derby festivities.  This week's feta is an especially good batch.  Sometimes the feta just takes on a life of its own and bowls us over with its flavor, and sometimes is just stays meek and humble.  This week it's strutting!

Don't forget we have the best GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICHES on the planet - made with a combo of market cheeses, crusty bread and real butter.  Add Hood's Heritage Hogs bacon, a cup of java from one of our coffee vendors, and it's breakfast.

Blue Moon Farm {Facebook}{Website}{Email}

It's always a big week in Kentucky leading up to the first Saturday in May!  It's Derby time!!  A festive time, even for those of us not going to the race!!

ASPARAGUS has hit, and we have a terrific recipe for you on our Facebook page (link above).  Crispy Baked Asparagus Fries. Here's a photo of it!

Our philosophy for asparagus is.....eat it at least one meal a day (2 or 3 times is even better!) while it's in season, then wait til it rolls around next year!

We've got a suggestion for a really quick and easy dish that would make a great addition to a Derby Party buffet table, or a side dish for your dinner any time!

Garlic Scape Pesto Potato Salad

2 LB potatoes of your choice, skin on, cut into 1" cubes

2 stalks celery cut into ¼ - ½" pieces

1 medium onion, chopped

Garlic Scape Pesto, to taste

Balsamic vinegar- several large dashes, or to taste.

Boil potato pieces approx.. 8 minutes or until slightly crunchy.  Pour water off and while potatoes are hot, add celery and onion.  Mix.

Let stand covered for 10 minutes.

Mix in Garlic Scape Pesto to coat pieces, and splash with balsamic vinegar.  Salt and pepper to taste.  Extra good with a bit of cayenne pepper.

Serve either warm or chilled.

We can supply you with all the fixin's for your parties, from PORK, BEEF, and LAMB to beautiful SALAD GREENS and BABY GREEN GARLIC, CHEESES and BREADS, and even locally produced CORN MEAL, GRITS and TORTILLA SHELLS!!  Need a hostess gift?  How about some nice handmade SOAPS from Stone Cross Farm?  Or a cute little bottle of our "knock-your-socks-off" GARLIC POWDER?

Come see us Saturday and look around!  If we don't have what you're looking for, we probably know where to send you for it!

Happy Derby!  We hope your horse wins!

Boone Creek Creamery {Facebook}{Website}

Fayette County

We will have our cheeses at the Market this weekend.

Our cheese is made from all natural JD Country Milk, a family owned Mennonite farm in Logan County. The cows are pasture grazed and never given any antibiotics or hormones. Instead they are fed a vitamin enriched diet and all the grass they can eat. The milk is not homogenized and is pasteurized at just 145 degrees, then quickly cooled to preserve the natural flavor and enzymes that Mother Nature intended. We think the milk tastes better because the cows are happy.

You won't see hydraulic presses and fancy modern equipment in our micro-creamery. Instead, we make our cheeses by hand using traditional European techniques to protect the delicate curds. This is a lot more work and very time consuming, but we believe it creates better cheeses with rich complex flavors. We hope you agree.

This week we will have over a dozen different cheeses available. Stop by and sample our Butterkase (Amish Butter Cheese), Mama Mia, Sassy Redhead, Tuscan Sun, Smoked Cheddar and of course our bourbon infused Kentucky Derby. Oh, and don't miss the Caerphilly, a tangy traditional Welsh coal miners cheese.

Thanks for your support. See you at the market.

Kentucky Lamb {Facebook}

Washington County

The fact that we had a long icy winter isn't news to any of us but for KyLamb it has made a difference in our lambs weight gain.  We are proud however to have been  able to keep up with those of you who ordered through the winter and thank you for it and now, you'll be able to pick up your favorite cuts at the market starting this Saturday.

Magic Beans Coffee Roasters {Website}{Facebook}

Fayette County

Magic Beans returns this week with our freshly roasted beans, coffee bar, and cold brew concentrate.

Our cold brew concentrate sold out very quickly last week, so please pre-order if you would like to guarantee a bottle at http://www.magicbeanscoffee.com/shop/cold-brew-concentrate/

Our new roasts this week will include the last of our estate coffee from Hacienda La Minita in Costa Rica. Those of you who have had La Minita know what an incredibly rich and well-balanced coffee it is. Those of you who haven't - this is your last chance for a while. But worry not, because we will be receiving more La Minita later this Spring.

We will also feature a limited amount of this month's coffee selection for the Origin Explorer's Club - a fantastic Ecuadorian coffee. This one will go fast, so get there early if you want a bag.

And of course, as always, we will be brewing your favorite coffees to order by the cup and cooling you off with our freshly brewed iced coffee. (And a special derby treat!)

Quarles Farm {Website}{Facebook}

Shelby County

The weather is finally starting to break and we're starting to see some sun and warmer weather.  A very welcome sight indeed.  The lambs, kids and young calves are enjoying the warmer days and so are we.  The lettuce and other vegetables seeded in the ground a few weeks ago are sprouting and it appears the growing season is on the way.

While waiting on our veggies to mature, we still have coolers full of beef, lamb and goat.  The tables are full of canned goods such as corn relish, squash pickles, green tomato relish, which is also known as chow chow, and a wide selection of interesting jams.  There's also breads that aren't your usual zucchini bread.  Lemon poppy seed zucchini as well as blueberry poppy seed and many other favorites are available each week.

Give a leg of lamb a try for Easter instead of ham.  Good local lamb that is carefully tended to give you the most flavor in each bite.  All our animals graze the fields daily and have access to wholesome grass to provide a succulent main dish for your meals.  Our goat or lamb is a wonderful change from some of the more readily available meats.

Stop by Cheapside on Saturday or Southland on Sunday for breakfast, brunch or lunch. Have a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit or bacon and eggs. We're grilling burgers, brats and jumbo hot dogs all made with our beef and containing no fillers. It's all beef and all good.

Check us out at our website at quarlesfarm.com or visit us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Quarlesfarm?ref=hl   We try to keep folks up to date on what we're doing and how you're food's grown. Our food is your local connection to healthy eating.

Three Toads Farm {Facebook}

Coming up this week ...

-- LILIES - the luscious soft pink 'Sorbonne' and we'll also have a variety of lily plants, ready to go in your garden now. Talk about instant gratification!

-- LAVENDER 'PHENOMENAL' - this is a totally new variety of Lavender that we got from a wonderful grower in the Skagit Valley of Washington state. Phenomenal has a higher oil content (making it more fragrant) and stronger disease resistance than other Lavenders ... and we've fallen in love with it! It stands up to heat, humidity and extreme weather (like our crazy winters).

-- SPEARMINT - we're growing true spearmint for our friends at Louisville Stoneware and will have some at the Market. Sure, it's fabulous with Bourbon, but it's also excellent in any kind of icy drinks and teas! Butterflies and hummingbirds also love, love, LOVE it's pink-purple flowers.

-- NASTURTIUMS and SWEET PEAS -- we're growing big 14" Italian clay pots of climbing Nasturtium and Sweet Peas for Mothers Day. If your favorite sweetie or mom loves flowers, we think this is the most unique gift you might find. We can deliver them within the Lexington area.

Please give us a call (859-771-2085) or message us on Facebook if you have questions or to reserve flowers. Thanks so much for your support and we hope to see you Saturday!

Gleaning Amounts in Pounds

June 2010-Present  364,143

Tally 2014                  28,566

Glean KY began four years ago when three community members met and decided to do something about food waste and food insecurity in Kentucky. When looking at the statistics, 17% of the population in Fayette County is considered 'food insecure,' meaning they do not always know where their next meal is coming from, and yet 51% of fruits and vegetables are never eaten at the end of the production process. With that knowledge, they began collecting excess produce from the Lexington Farmer's Market, and trying to find links between local farms and local hunger programs that might need the food. They gleaned 37,000 pounds of food that year, and now have gleaned over 357,000 pounds since they began, delivering to over 51 hunger programs in Fayette and surrounding counties.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so pleasepledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
