Dear Market Patrons and Friends,

Last week I told you to pack up your scarves and sweaters.  Boy was I wrong.  Even though it is cold today, the weekend looks to great.  Put the Lexington Farmers' Market on your To-Do List right now! Each week we creep closer to summer, the more variety the market will offer.  You don't want to miss out on produce with a short local growing season like wild ramps, asparagus, or strawberries; they only  appear at market for a few weeks and they sell out quickly!  With all the spring events going on in Lexington, we thank you for choosing to spend your time with the Lexington Farmers' Market.

See you at market,

InYourCommunity In Your Community

What a poppin' good time we had at the Winburn Community Action Center last week! Youth from the community and their parents husked ears, stripped kernels, and popped themselves a delicious mountain of local popcorn. Students at William Wells Brown Elementary also enjoyed a taste of spring when we served up rainbow carrot crunch at in the cafeteria on Friday.

Don't forget that our final Youth Vegetable Literacy class of the school year will take place at William Wells Brown Community Center tonight at 6pm. The final Adult Workshop will be held tomorrow at 7pm

Seasonally Inspired Recipe:
Rainbow Carrot Crunch

This week Stephanie, as part of the LFM Outreach Program, hosted a taste test at William Wells Brown Elementary School.  We wanted to introduce the kids to something new but also something simple and recognizable. We landed on serving carrots, but not just your typical orange-colored ones. We wanted a variety of colors to show the students that there is more to agriculture and food than simply what you can observe at the grocery store.  Here is the recipe we sent home.

Ingredients
  • Multi-colored carrots
  • (Optional) Oil/vinegar/dressing
Directions

"In a few short minutes you can turn a bunch of carrots into a tasty, after-school snack."
  1. Wash carrots and dry thoroughly
  2. Peel carrots (if necessary)
  3. Slice carrots thinly
  4. (Optional) Toss in oil and vinegar or dip in your favorite dressing

Ingredients currently available at the LFM
  • Carrots

Bleugrass Chevre {Facebook}{Website}

Fayette County

You'll surely be needing some fresh chèvre for your Easter weekend, so we'll have pretty spring rounds sprinkled with a "confetti" of edible pansies and violets - and filled with sun dried tomatoes and sunflower seeds.  And don't forget to stop by for breakfast or lunch because we have the most luscious grilled cheese sandwiches you have ever experienced.  This week's highlight is a trio of market cheeses (Heavenly Homestead Swiss, Boone Creek Gruyere and Cloverdale Creamery Cowbells in Clover).  You can choose "cheese stands alone" or combine cheeses with country ham from Stone Cross Farm via Blue Moon Garlic's booth - or with Hood's Heritage bacon.

Grass fed/grass finished BEEF from Colcord Farm in Bourbon County. We're having an OPENING SPECIAL on their SHORT RIBS at $3.50/LB (reg. $4/99/LB).  Good deal!!  Here's a yummy recipe to try- http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2009/11/braised-short-ribs-heaven-on-a-plate/  This week we'll have their BEEF BRATS and BEEF HOT DOGS too!  Check out all our beef prices!

Something new and different for this year........TORTILLA CHIPS!!  They are made for Sunflower Sundries of Mt. Olivet, from the heirloom corn they grow on their farm in Robertson County.  This week we'll also have their FRESHLY GROUND CORN MEAL and GRITS!

Stone Cross Farm's wonderful HANDMADE SOAPS will be back in all different varieties too!

Something for everyone!!

We always look forward to seeing all your smiling faces at the market!  See you there!  Special orders

Boone Creek Creamery {Facebook}{Website}

Fayette County

We will have our cheeses at the Market this Saturday.

Our cheese is made from all natural JD Country Milk, a family owned Mennonite farm in Logan County. The cows are pasture grazed and never given any antibiotics or hormones. Instead they are fed a vitamin enriched diet and all the grass they can eat. The milk is not homogenized and is pasteurized at just 145 degrees, then quickly cooled to preserve the natural flavor and enzymes that Mother Nature intended. We think the milk tastes better because the cows are happy.

You won't see hydraulic presses and fancy modern equipment in our micro-creamery. Instead, we make our cheeses by hand using traditional European techniques to protect the delicate curds. This is a lot more work and very time consuming, but we believe it creates better cheeses with rich complex flavors. We hope you agree.

This week we will have over a dozen different cheeses available. Stop by and sample our Butterkase (Amish Butter Cheese), Mama Mia, Sassy Redhead, Tuscan Sun, Smoked Cheddar and of course our bourbon infused Kentucky Derby. Oh, and don't miss the Caerphilly, a tangy traditional Welsh coal miners cheese.

Thanks for your support. See you at the market.

La Petite Sucre {Website}{Facebook}{Instagram}

Fayette County

We had great time last Saturday at the Farmers Market, despite the cold and windy day. We LOVED meeting everyone and shared our handcrafted French Macaron! Looks like the weather should be nice this weekend, so come and stop by at the Farmers Market. We look forward seeing everyone!

La Petite Sucré (pronounced su-cray, meaning sweet) is a small boutique specializing in macarons and custom design macarons.  Macaron is a gluten free French confection made of almond flour and meringue filled with choices of ganache, buttercream, caramel or jam filling. Our macarons are about one and seven inches in diameter and each is handcrafted carefully to create a perfect confection that is visually appealing and will delight your taste buds. Our macarons are slightly crispy on the outside, and soft/chewy on the inside.  They are best consumed at room temperature.

Our macarons are baked to order in a certified commercial kitchen located at Lexington, Kentucky. We make our macarons from scratch using the finest ingredients available (hormone free eggs, real butter, the finest chocolate and no preservatives).

Easter Pre-Orders!!

Easter is around the corner! Pre-order your Easter Macaron gift box now and you can pick up your order on April 19th at the Farmers Market.

Quarles Farm {Website}{Facebook}

Shelby County

The weather is finally starting to break and we're starting to see some sun and warmer weather.  A very welcome sight indeed.  The lambs, kids and young calves are enjoying the warmer days and so are we.  The lettuce and other vegetables seeded in the ground a few weeks ago are sprouting and it appears the growing season is on the way.

While waiting on our veggies to mature, we still have coolers full of beef, lamb and goat.  The tables are full of canned goods such as corn relish, squash pickles, green tomato relish, which is also known as chow chow, and a wide selection of interesting jams.  There's also breads that aren't your usual zucchini bread.  Lemon poppy seed zucchini as well as blueberry poppy seed and many other favorites are available each week.

Give a leg of lamb a try for Easter instead of ham.  Good local lamb that is carefully tended to give you the most flavor in each bite.  All our animals graze the fields daily and have access to wholesome grass to provide a succulent main dish for your meals.  Our goat or lamb is a wonderful change from some of the more readily available meats.

Stop by Cheapside on Saturday or Southland on Sunday for breakfast, brunch or lunch. Have a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit or bacon and eggs. We're grilling burgers, brats and jumbo hot dogs all made with our beef and containing no fillers. It's all beef and all good.

Check us out at our website at quarlesfarm.com or visit us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Quarlesfarm?ref=hl   We try to keep folks up to date on what we're doing and how you're food's grown. Our food is your local connection to healthy eating.

Last week was awesome - so great seeing so many people at the Market!

Don't let this holdover Winter weather get you down. Come down to the Market for a re-load of Spring! This week we'll have:

- TULIPS - long-stemmed (24"+) French tulips in gorgeous pastel shades (pictured) and two varieties of Parrots (Green Wave and Black). Tulips sold very quickly last week, so come early!

- LILIES - huge flowers, long stems and amazing fragrance! We have several varieties blooming (giant white Ariosto, luscious soft pink Sorbonne and lemon meringue colored Conca D'Or).

- SPRING BULB GARDENS - we'll have a FEW of our fragrant spring bulb gardens, potted up into waterproof willow baskets and topped with LIVING clump moss. They are beautiful inside now and can be planted outside after they're finished blooming to come back next year.

We offer our tulips with the bulbs on because it makes the blooms last the longest time possible. The bulbs can be cut off, along with the big lower leaves (we can do that for you), or you can keep the bulbs on and display the tulips in a big hurricane vase ... they look awesome!

Please give us a call (859-771-2085) or message us on Facebook if you have questions or to reserve flowers. Thanks so much for your support and we hope to see you Saturday!

Gleaning Amounts in Pounds

June 2010-Present  364,143

Tally 2014                  28,566

Glean KY began four years ago when three community members met and decided to do something about food waste and food insecurity in Kentucky. When looking at the statistics, 17% of the population in Fayette County is considered 'food insecure,' meaning they do not always know where their next meal is coming from, and yet 51% of fruits and vegetables are never eaten at the end of the production process. With that knowledge, they began collecting excess produce from the Lexington Farmer's Market, and trying to find links between local farms and local hunger programs that might need the food. They gleaned 37,000 pounds of food that year, and now have gleaned over 357,000 pounds since they began, delivering to over 51 hunger programs in Fayette and surrounding counties.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so pleasepledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
