Sunny days are ahead of us.  Pack up your sweater and scarves.  Bring on the sandals and shorts!  I've been waiting far to long to say something like that.  It seems like winter started 6 months ago.  Now get up early, experience the spring morning, invite people over for brunch, and serve them the tastiest,  yummiest meal chocked full of items from your Lexington Farmers' Market.  The festivities begin at 7AM on Saturday and at 10AM on Sunday.

See you at market,

Seasonally Inspired Recipe:
Spinach Salad

You might not have seen it last weekend, but the market had fresh, local spinach.  In celebration of this crisp, spring green I want to take a simple approach.  A spinach salad will highlight all the depth and sweetness that this baby green has to offer.

M. Eva-Marie has a beautiful blog filled with delicious recipes.  It was hard to choose just one of her post, but I'm in a salad mood!

Ingredients
  • 2 tsp. extra-virgin olive oil, plus more as needed
  • 2 oz. Australian bacon, cut into 1/4-inch (6-mm.) cubes
  • 3 Tbs. red wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp. fresh thyme leaves
  • Pinch of sugar
  • 1 shallot, minced
  • Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 5 oz.  baby spinach
Directions
  1. In a small saute pan over medium-high heat, warm the olive oil. Add the bacon and cook, stirring occasionally, until browned and crisp, about 4 minutes. Pour into a fine-mesh sieve set over a small heatproof bowl, capturing the fat, and set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the vinegar, thyme and sugar until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Return the saute pan to medium-high heat (it will still be filmed with fat). Add the shallot and saute until soft but not browned, about 1 minute. Add the vinegar mixture, bring to a boil, and boil for 1 minute, scraping up any browned bits with a wooden spoon. Remove from the heat. Add a few grinds of pepper and 1 1/2 tablespoons of the reserved bacon fat to the pan, supplementing with olive oil if needed. Whisk until well blended to make a vinaigrette. Taste and adjust the seasoning, then cover to keep warm.
  4. Pour water to a depth of 3 inches (7.5 cm.) into a large saute pan, add a pinch of salt, and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Crack each egg into a small ramekin and carefully slip it into the water. Adjust the heat so that the water barely simmers. Poach the eggs for 3-5 minutes, then remove from the water with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate.
  5. In a bowl, toss the spinach with a pinch of salt and a few grinds of pepper. Whisk the warm vinaigrette to recombine, then drizzle about half of it over the spinach and toss well. Taste and adjust the seasoning.
  6. Divide the dressed spinach evenly between 2 plates and top each serving with a poached egg. Drizzle each egg with some of the remaining vinaigrette and season lightly with salt and pepper. Scatter the cooked bacon over the salads and serve.

Bleugrass Chevre {Facebook}{Website}

Fayette County

We experimented with our panini grill and all the market's luscious cheeses last week, and we think we have the nearly-perfect GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH.  (You have no idea how many grilled cheese sandwiches I have consumed over the winter for "market research.")  Add a few slices of Hood's Heritage Hogs bacon and it's grilled cheese nirvana.  This week we're adding Dad's Smoky Pimento to our sandwich selections, so how can it get any better?

Of course we will have all of our chèvre flavors ... Chipotle was a hit last week.  We have Kentucky Feta in vacuum packed blocks now, and it's going to be a beautiful spring day.

See you at the market!

Boone Creek Creamery {Facebook}{Website}

Fayette County

We will have our cheeses at the Market this Saturday.

Our cheese is made from all natural JD Country Milk, a family owned Mennonite farm in Logan County. The cows are pasture grazed and never given any antibiotics or hormones. Instead they are fed a vitamin enriched diet and all the grass they can eat. The milk is not homogenized and is pasteurized at just 145 degrees, then quickly cooled to preserve the natural flavor and enzymes that Mother Nature intended. We think the milk tastes better because the cows are happy.

You won't see hydraulic presses and fancy modern equipment in our micro-creamery. Instead, we make our cheeses by hand using traditional European techniques to protect the delicate curds. This is a lot more work and very time consuming, but we believe it creates better cheeses with rich complex flavors. We hope you agree.

This week we will have over a dozen different cheeses available. Stop by and sample our Butterkase (Amish Butter Cheese), Mama Mia, Sassy Redhead, Tuscan Sun, Smoked Cheddar and of course our bourbon infused Kentucky Derby. Oh, and don't miss the Caerphilly, a tangy traditional Welsh coal miners cheese.

Thanks for your support. See you at the market.

La Petite Sucre {Website}{Facebook}{Instagram}

We had great time last Saturday at the Farmers Market, despite the cold and windy day. We LOVED meeting everyone and shared our handcrafted French Macaron! Looks like the weather should be nice this weekend, so come and stop by at the Farmers Market. We look forward seeing everyone!

La Petite Sucré (pronounced su-cray, meaning sweet) is a small boutique specializing in macarons and custom design macarons.  Macaron is a gluten free French confection made of almond flour and meringue filled with choices of ganache, buttercream, caramel or jam filling. Our macarons are about one and seven inches in diameter and each is handcrafted carefully to create a perfect confection that is visually appealing and will delight your taste buds. Our macarons are slightly crispy on the outside, and soft/chewy on the inside.  They are best consumed at room temperature.

Our macarons are baked to order in a certified commercial kitchen located at Lexington, Kentucky. We make our macarons from scratch using the finest ingredients available (hormone free eggs, real butter, the finest chocolate and no preservatives).

Easter Pre-Orders!!

Easter is around the corner! Pre-order your Easter Macaron gift box now and you can pick up your order on April 19th at the Farmers Market.

In addition to the chops, you'll be able to find 9 flavors of sausage, 2 bratwurst, 3 styles of our chemical nitrate/nitrite free bacon, and all cuts in between. A farm favorite are the cutlets. Magic Beans Coffee Roasters {Website}{Facebook}

Fayette County

Magic Beans will be back at the Lexington Farmers Market for the season starting this Saturday. We're looking forward to all our old friends and the new faces we are sure to see as well. We have some big things in store this season, and we can't wait to roll them out.

This Sunday, we will be featuring two of our standard Fair Trade offerings, Peru Cajamarca and Sumatra Mandheling, as well as a limited release roast from Burundi. Stop by and see us for a freshly roasted and brewed cup, and pick up some beans for home. We're looking forward to seeing you!

Peru Cajamarca - Sweet and balanced, with hints of floral and fruit aromas, and a smooth toffee-like body. Medium roast

Sumatra Mandheling - Rich, deep, chocolatey, with woodsy-spicy notes and a hint of black pepper. Full bodied. Dark roast

Burundi Kayanza - Located in the heart of East Africa's coffee region, Burundi is a small country with similar climate and terrain to Kenya and Tanzania. This coffee is fully washed and sun-dried on raised beds at the Gitika cooperative washing station, where around 1,350 small farmers deliver their coffee cherry to be processed. In the cup, look for suggestions of chocolate and sage with tart lemon and pineapple. Light roast

Quarles Farm {Website}{Facebook}

Shelby County

The weather is finally starting to break and we're starting to see some sun and warmer weather.  A very welcome sight indeed.  The lambs, kids and young calves are enjoying the warmer days and so are we.  The lettuce and other vegetables seeded in the ground a few weeks ago are sprouting and it appears the growing season is on the way.

While waiting on our veggies to mature, we still have coolers full of beef, lamb and goat.  The tables are full of canned goods such as corn relish, squash pickles, green tomato relish, which is also known as chow chow, and a wide selection of interesting jams.  There's also breads that aren't your usual zucchini bread.  Lemon poppy seed zucchini as well as blueberry poppy seed and many other favorites are available each week.

Give a leg of lamb a try for Easter instead of ham.  Good local lamb that is carefully tended to give you the most flavor in each bite.  All our animals graze the fields daily and have access to wholesome grass to provide a succulent main dish for your meals.  Our goat or lamb is a wonderful change from some of the more readily available meats.

Stop by Cheapside on Saturday or Southland on Sunday for breakfast, brunch or lunch. Have a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit or bacon and eggs. We're grilling burgers, brats and jumbo hot dogs all made with our beef and containing no fillers. It's all beef and all good.

Check us out at our website at quarlesfarm.com or visit us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Quarlesfarm?ref=hl   We try to keep folks up to date on what we're doing and how you're food's grown. Our food is your local connection to healthy eating.

Can't wait for Saturday to get here - it's going to be a beautiful day and we have some truly beautiful flowers for this week's Market!

- Conca d'Or lilies - huge lemon and white flowers (pictured)

- Sorbonne lilies - soft pink with lots of blooms per stem

- Merostar lilies - big raspberry flowers rimmed in white

- French tulips - long-stemmed (24"+) in gorgeous pastel shades

- Orange Emperor - this is the tulip featured in last Sunday's Herald-Leader. It's the most delightful, impossibly cheerful shade of orange!

We offer our tulips with the bulbs on because it makes the blooms last the longest time possible. The bulbs can be cut off, along with the big lower leaves (we can do that for you), or you can keep the bulbs on and display the tulips in a big hurricane vase.

Please give us a call (859-771-2085) or message us on Facebook if you have questions or to reserve flowers. Thanks so much for your support and we hope to see you Saturday!

Food News & Chews TV Show with Chef Jeremy Ashby & Sylvia Lovely, Sundays 11p on Fox 56 WDKY, filmed an episode of the weekly show at Lexington Farmers Market.  Chef Jeremy and Sylvia toured the market, discussed food news topics and chatted with vendors while collecting ingredients for the cooking segment.  Chef & Sylvia have a great conversation with Jeff Dabbelt, Executive Director of LFM.  They cover local sourcing of food, what is available year round and the positive impact of spending food dollars with local producers.  Jeff, Sylvia and Chef all agree farmers markets build community.  In our cooking segment, Chef makes a simple dish in under five minutes with ingredients he collected that morning in the market.  Tune in for a taste of the sights and sounds of the Lexington Farmers Market!  Click Food News & Chews: Lexington Farmers Market Edition to view the episode!

Gleaning Amounts in Pounds

June 2010-Present  364,143

Tally 2014                  28,566

Glean KY began four years ago when three community members met and decided to do something about food waste and food insecurity in Kentucky. When looking at the statistics, 17% of the population in Fayette County is considered 'food insecure,' meaning they do not always know where their next meal is coming from, and yet 51% of fruits and vegetables are never eaten at the end of the production process. With that knowledge, they began collecting excess produce from the Lexington Farmer's Market, and trying to find links between local farms and local hunger programs that might need the food. They gleaned 37,000 pounds of food that year, and now have gleaned over 357,000 pounds since they began, delivering to over 51 hunger programs in Fayette and surrounding counties.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so pleasepledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
