Dear Market Patrons and Friends, 

 

Last Saturday as our farmers were ready to leave their farms and head to Cheapside Park, a wintery batch of snow and high winds blew through the Bluegrass. The poor visibility coupled with the icy conditions of ancillary roads made the perspective trip to downtown Lexington too dangerous. We hope that we can avoid similar weather for the year.  On that front, Saturday's forecast is for temperatures in the 40s! Can I call that a heatwave? 

This Saturday also marks that first market in February! That means 2 things 
  • The Super Bowl is a time to dine!  Although Americans consume the most food on Thanksgiving, the second most day for eating is Super Bowl Sunday.  Make sure to set your party apart from the rest by highlighting recipes that feature Lexington Farmers' Market ingredients.
  • Start planning your Valentine's Day now by stocking up on delicious meats, vegetables, jams, and EVEN handmade chocolates for your Lexington Farmers' Market.

The Lextran transit center is conveniently located on Vine Street just a third of a mile from our Saturday Market in Cheapside Park. Walking from the transit center to market takes 5-7 minutes.

 

All routes stop at the transit center, so regardless of where in Lexington (and soon to be, Nicholasville) you are coming from, this stop makes your Lexington Farmers' Market just a short walk away every week, all year.

We now have one market each week:
 
Our Tuesday & Thursday market is closed for the season.  We look forward to serving you again in the spring of 2014.
 
Our Wednesday evening market is closed for the season because the University of Kentucky is back in session.
 
On Saturday, you'll find your favorite farmers set up with tables full of fresh, seasonal products at the Fifth-Third Bank Pavilion in Cheapside Park from 7AM-2PM.  Our Saturday market is open EVERY WEEK, ALL YEAR!  Winter Hours are 8AM-1PM.
 
Our Sunday market is now closed.  Look for us back on Southland Drive in the spring.

Remember, free parking is available at all of our market locations. On Saturday, you may park in the Financial Center garage and in any metered street spot for FREE!  There is a map below!

Seasonally Inspired Recipe:
Buffalo Sweet Potato Fries 

I can down some buffalo wings.  That spicy, vinegary, buttery goodness.  But sometimes, as I finish off a dozen of them I am overwhelmed with regret.  Not only did I eat all the chicken, the calorie laden sauce,  and the blue cheese dip, I also consumed sides of fries or maybe twice baked potato skins...and that is all during the first half of the game.  Many of you have probably only read about such things in books--wildlife books, but such encounters are not rare on Super Bowl Sunday.  To help satiate the desire to consume ridiculous amounts of buffalo-y while also being cognizant of what I am eating, I set out to find a healthier substitute.

Luckily Jessica at A Kitchen Addiction had just the recipe I needed.   

Ingredients
  • 3 sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced into thin, uniform strips
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 tbsp corn starch
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp freshly ground pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic minced or powdered 
  • 1 tsp onion minced or powdered 
  • ½ C hot sauce
  • ¾ C crumbled feta or blue cheese
  • 1 tbsp chopped chives
  • ranch, for dipping

Directions   

  1. Preheat oven to 400. Spray baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray or line with a baking mat.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together corn starch, salt, pepper, onion, and garlic powder. In a large bowl, toss sweet potato fries with olive oil. Sprinkle with cornstarch mixture and toss. Spread in an even layer on baking sheet.
  3. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until soft and starting to turn golden brown.
  4. Return fries to bowl and toss with hot sauce. Return to baking sheet in an even layer. Sprinkle with ½ cup cheese.
  5. Bake for another 4-5 minutes or until cheese is melted and bubbly. (Feta cheese will retain it's shape but will get soft and slightly melted.)
  6. Sprinkle with remaining ¼ cup cheese. Serve with a drizzle of hot sauce and ranch for dipping.

Everyone at Elmwood wants to thank you for your support of local farms and let you know how much we appreciate your attendance at the Lexington Farmers Market week after week.  As the seasons change, we continue to work to offer you the highest quality USDA Certified Organic produce, eggs, and meats that we can.

 

We will be set up each Saturday downtown all winter long!  Feel free to phone ahead for special orders.

PRODUCE we are offering now includes Fall Squash, Onions, Potatoes, Kale, Sweet Potatoes and more.  Cold temperatures are a challenge, but a few green items under cover are producing successfully.

EGGS We offer each market our certified organic eggs from free-ranging hens who live outdoors on grass pasture.  Both whole dozen and half-dozens available, each egg is hand washed and inspected for cracks. Our hens are always outside, enjoying the green growing grass & clover and rewarding us with beautiful big brown eggs packed full of flavor, orangey color, and healthful omega-3-fatty acids.  Each hen's diet includes certified organic grain which is non-gmo.

 

BEEF, LAMB and POULTRY  Each week we bring a complete inventory of our 100% grass-fed Angus organic beef and our 100% grass fed lamb.  We also offer certified organic whole chickens, cut-up chicken pieces, and flavorful hearty stewing hens.  In addition, we have specialty beef sausages, chicken liver, beef broth bones, roasts for soups and stews, and even bones for your pet!

PANTRY  We are grinding our own heirloom organic corn to offer you non-gmo fresh cornmeal.  Other items include dried beans (ying-yang, black turtle, peregion, and red kidney), popcorn, dried tomatoes, and dried chile peppers.  We sent our organic tomatoes to be professionally packed into Salsa, Ketchup and Marinara, all available in BPA-free glass jars.

The outdoor Lexington Farmers Markets for 2013 are now open. We will NOT be at the following markets this week:    

  

Downtown at Cheapside Park, Saturday, February 1st (opens at 8 am) 

 

You may purchase honey, pollen, and/or beeswax candles from us anytime from our home at 1909 Nicholasville Road in Lexington. Call us first at 859 276-0258, and we will put what you want on our back porch for you to pick up. You may also call to make an appointment to look at Bev's candle selection.

Our home is located one block north (toward downtown) of the intersection of Southland Drive and Nicholasville Road. Turn on Goodrich Avenue and take the first driveway on your right, and you will be in our back yard. There will be a silver travel trailer (Airstream) under an awning directly in front of you. Your honey will be on the back porch. If we are not home, just leave the money on the counter.  There is change in a small jar on the counter if you need some.

We're about to start having our first baby goats soon.  Of course, we've been saying that since the first of December and there's still none on the ground.  It appears that these goats have minds of their own and it'll be on their terms and not ours!  I just hope it's not during this coming week's cold snap.  If it is, I guess we'll be making room in the basement for babies.

 
Anyway, we're still at the Saturday market along with a few other hardy souls and we have coolers stocked with goat, lamb and beef.  There's some really tender goat and lamb shoulder steaks for your first introduction to these cuts and plenty of beef stew meat, soup bones and ground beef to make some of the heartier winter fare. Put a roast or a brisket in the roaster on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and that night's supper will be one of the most comforting that you've had in a while.   We also have plenty of potatoes, parsnips, turnips and local apples.  Baked and canned goods are on the tables and the grill is still available for breakfast and lunch.  It's also been a great hand warmer.  Just ask Josh!

Food News & Chews TV Show with Chef Jeremy Ashby & Sylvia Lovely, Sundays 11p on Fox 56 WDKY, filmed an episode of the weekly show at Lexington Farmers Market.  Chef Jeremy and Sylvia toured the market, discussed food news topics and chatted with vendors while collecting ingredients for the cooking segment.  Chef & Sylvia have a great conversation with Jeff Dabbelt, Executive Director of LFM.  They cover local sourcing of food, what is available year round and the positive impact of spending food dollars with local producers.  Jeff, Sylvia and Chef all agree farmers markets build community.  In our cooking segment, Chef makes a simple dish in under five minutes with ingredients he collected that morning in the market.  Tune in for a taste of the sights and sounds of the Lexington Farmers Market!  Click Food News & Chews: Lexington Farmers Market Edition to view the episode!
