Dear Market Patrons and Friends,

I want your input!

Are you part of a community organization?  Are you a leader in a youth-focused non-profit?  Are you a chef or skilled home cook?  We want you to be involved in the Lexington Farmers' Market this year.  There are hundreds of ways that you can participate.  Some possible ideas include volunteering at a weekend market, submitting a recipe for our newsletter's Seasonally Inspired Recipe, hosting a neighborhood cookout that highlights the bounty of the market, or even leading a cooking demo.  For more questions and limitations please contact me via email or even send a message to the LFM Facebook Page

We also want to know if you have any great spring, summer, or fall market event ideas!  A watermelon seed art competition? A pumpkin canoe race?  What do you think would be the best idea?

Hope to see you at market,

Josh England

Thank you to all of you who took the outreach survey. We appreciate your feedback and look forward to implementing many of your suggestions in 2014.

This year, like last, we pledge to make Lexington Farmers' Market products more accessible to all who desire them. In addition to bringing LFM events and programs to your community, we hope encourage you to visit our regular market locations all year long.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be featuring bus stops near our winter market and the routes that will lead you to them. If you ride the bus to market, send us your feedback. Which route works best for you? All customers who ride the bus to market will receive a small token of our appreciation.

Seasonally Inspired Recipe:
Roasted Parsnip Hash

Are meals for this time of the year getting boring for you?  Do you spend more time watching cooking shows than actually cook?  Well it seems like that is a common problem on cold, windy nights.  This week make your meal time into an adventure.  Get a new ingredient or try a new style of cooking.  Eat breakfast for dinner or eat your dessert first!  One vegetable that you might not have used before is a parsnip.  It is a root vegetable that can look like a white carrot.

Annie D'Souza shows us that food doesn't need to be pretty to be fancy or delicious. On her blog called Worthy Pause, she provides easy-to-follow recipes and make throwing together a meal simple.

Ingredients
  • 2 lbs parsnips, peeled and chopped into about 1/2 inch fries (or cubes if you like a traditional hash look)
  •  3-4 sprigs fresh rosemary, chopped (or dried equivalent)
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  •  2 garlic cloves, chopped1/2 cup parsley, chopped
  • 1 pint of baby bella mushrooms, quartered
  • a couple handfuls of kale
  • olive oil
  • sea salt and pepper to taste
  • eggs

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.

  2. Toss the parsnips and mushrooms with olive oil, garlic, rosemary, parsley cumin, salt and pepper and spread in a single layer on a baking sheet.

  3. Bake for 10 minutes.

  4. Stir, add the greens and bake for 10-15 more minutes until thoroughly roasted and tender. Careful not to let the greens get too dry.

  5. When your hash is cooked, turn the oven down to keep it warm while you fry up eggs to top the hash. I think it's best with over-easy or sunny-side up egg and a drizzle of spicy sauce, but you do you.

These products can be purchased from LFM market members:
  • Parsnips
  • Garlic
  • Kale
  • Eggs

IF YOU HAVE QUESTION ABOUT SPECIFIC PRODUCT AVAILABILITY OR FARMER ATTENDANCE ON SATURDAY, PLEASE MESSAGE THE LEXINGTON FARMERS' MARKET FACEBOOK PAGE

Elmwood Stock Farm {Facebook} {Website} {CSA} {Pinterest}
Scott County

Everyone at Elmwood wants to thank you for your support of local farms and let you know how much we appreciate your attendance at the Lexington Farmers Market week after week.  As the seasons change, we continue to work to offer you the highest quality USDA Certified Organic produce, eggs, and meats that we can.

We will be set up each Saturday downtown all winter long!  Feel free to phone ahead for special orders.

PRODUCE we are offering now includes Fall Squash, Onions, Potatoes, Kale, Sweet Potatoes and more.  Cold temperatures are a challenge, but a few green items under cover are producing successfully.

EGGS We offer each market our certified organic eggs from free-ranging hens who live outdoors on grass pasture.  Both whole dozen and half-dozens available, each egg is hand washed and inspected for cracks. Our hens are always outside, enjoying the green growing grass & clover and rewarding us with beautiful big brown eggs packed full of flavor, orangey color, and healthful omega-3-fatty acids.  Each hen's diet includes certified organic grain which is non-gmo.

BEEF, LAMB and POULTRY  Each week we bring a complete inventory of our 100% grass-fed Angus organic beef and our 100% grass fed lamb.  We also offer certified organic whole chickens, cut-up chicken pieces, and flavorful hearty stewing hens.  In addition, we have specialty beef sausages, chicken liver, beef broth bones, roasts for soups and stews, and even bones for your pet!

Feel free to order ahead for quantity amounts or a particular cut for that special meal, and we'll have it ready for pickup at any of the farmers markets.  View our website for special Beef & Chicken Bundles, and other quantity packages to secure your winter supply of wholesome meats.

PANTRY  We are grinding our own heirloom organic corn to offer you non-gmo fresh cornmeal.  Other items include dried beans (ying-yang, black turtle, peregion, and red kidney), popcorn, dried tomatoes, and dried chile peppers.  We sent our organic tomatoes to be professionally packed into Salsa, Ketchup and Marinara, all available in BPA-free glass jars.

These days, more than ever, it's important to know the source of your family's food and you can look to our local organic farm to meet your body's nutritional needs resulting in good health.  Visit our website to learn more, review our price lists, pre-order your special items, or contact Elmwood for more information (scroll up a little for a quick link!)

Local Raw Honey by Nick and Bev Nickels {Website}

Fayette County

The outdoor Lexington Farmers Markets for 2013 are now open. We will NOT be at the following markets this week:

Downtown at Cheapside Park, Saturday, January  18th (opens at 8 am)

You may purchase honey, pollen, and/or beeswax candles from us anytime from our home at 1909 Nicholasville Road in Lexington. Call us first at 859 276-0258, and we will put what you want on our back porch for you to pick up. You may also call to make an appointment to look at Bev's candle selection.

Our home is located one block north (toward downtown) of the intersection of Southland Drive and Nicholasville Road. Turn on Goodrich Avenue and take the first driveway on your right, and you will be in our back yard. There will be a silver travel trailer (Airstream) under an awning directly in front of you. Your honey will be on the back porch. If we are not home, just leave the money on the counter.  There is change in a small jar on the counter if you need some.

Thanksgiving has past and Christmas is rushing to meet us.  We are through with fall calving and lambing and it's amazing just how fast those little ones can grow!  We'll still be at the pavilion each Saturday with beef, lamb, goat, baked goods, and canned goods as well as some vegetables such as potatoes, kale, turnips and parsnips.

Give yourself a break this year from Christmas turkey or ham.  Think about a nice rack of lamb or a lovely succulent leg of lamb or goat with cloves of garlic tucked throughout and sprinkled with rosemary.  Looks lovely on your table and you'll get rave reviews on having a meal that's totally different from all the others during the season.  We have plenty of both in stock as well as ribeyes and filets for those who really want to break out of the mold and fire up the grill on Christmas Day.  Just think, no big roaster to scrub or oven to clean!

Jams, canned goods and baked goods also make great Christmas presents for those you want to remember with small gifts this time of year.  They're always appreciated and besides, who needs another coffee cup or refridgerator magnet?  Stop by and do your shopping with us!

Remember, we'll not be moving into Victorian Square this year.  You'll find us there on Cheapside all winter long and we hope that you'll stop in and visit a spell.  We still have the grill serving breakfast and lunch and there's plenty of hot chocolate and coffee.

Follow us on Facebook or visit our website at quarlesfarm.com.  Drop us a line on our website or give us a call at 502-803-7292 if you need a bulk order or just want to make sure that we'll have plenty of whatever you're looking for on Saturday.

Food News & Chews

Food News & Chews TV Show with Chef Jeremy Ashby & Sylvia Lovely, Sundays 11p on Fox 56 WDKY, filmed an episode of the weekly show at Lexington Farmers Market.  Chef Jeremy and Sylvia toured the market, discussed food news topics and chatted with vendors while collecting ingredients for the cooking segment.  Chef & Sylvia have a great conversation with Jeff Dabbelt, Executive Director of LFM.  They cover local sourcing of food, what is available year round and the positive impact of spending food dollars with local producers.  Jeff, Sylvia and Chef all agree farmers markets build community.  In our cooking segment, Chef makes a simple dish in under five minutes with ingredients he collected that morning in the market.  Tune in for a taste of the sights and sounds of the Lexington Farmers Market!  Click Food News & Chews: Lexington Farmers Market Edition to view the episode!

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio

to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so pleasepledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
