Market News

Friends and Patrons of the Market,
Last weekend was action-packed: from Boomslang and the LexArts Gallery Hop to the Latino Festival and Crave Lexington. We want to thank all of you that stopped by our booth at Crave Lexington or chose to participate in the Follow The Food Farm tour and visit the Lexington Farmers' Market. Although Saturday started out rainy, I know that the farmers are very appreciative to those who braved the weather.
While this weekend in Lexington might be calmer, the market is still alive with fresh new-to-the-market-this-season produce and brimming with some of the summer's most savored flavors. Bring a bag and an appetite when you visit the market in the coming days.
See You At Market,
Josh England

In Your Community
We've enjoyed bringing Lexington Farmers' Market produce to events and classes around town the past few weeks. Introducing people to the fresh tastes and healthy contents of locally grown fruits and vegetables never gets old.
Tonight we begin a new adventure at the William Wells Brown Community Center as we hosting a vegetable literacy workshop for youth from 6:00-7:00pm. We'll also be hosting a similar workshop for adults at the Center on Thursday at 7:00pm. These workshops will take place monthly through the rest of the school year. Visit our Events Calendar for class descriptions and details.
When you see us (or one of our new advertisements) around town, send us a message! We'd love to hear your feedback and new ideas for becoming involved in your community.

Seasonally Inspired Recipe:Pawpaw Custard Pie
|
An Appalachian fruit and a Kentucky Blog! Today we celebrate the oft forgotten pawpaw, the largest tree fruit in North America. J Wehrle at
KYFoodie.com has written a wonderful blog entry and recipe about pawpaws that I encourage you to read. I've included photos from KYFoodie of the custard pie and pawpaw fruit. Although the texture and outside appearance of the fruit can be intimidating, the inside of the fruit is reminiscent of a very ripe banana or the tropical fruit, cherimoya. Its flavor is sweet, creamy and distictive.
Ingredients:
(makes 6-8 servings)
2/3c. sugar
- 1 1/3c. milk
- 2/3c. heavy whipping cream
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1c. pawpaw pulp (peeled and seeded)
- 1tsp. pure vanilla extract
Directions: - Thoroughly mash pawpaw pulp. If necessary, use mixer to get rid of large lumps. Combine all ingredients into heavy sauce pan and mix together.
- Stirring constantly, cook over medium heat until thickened.
- Pour into unbaked pie shell and bake until the crust is browned. (Use whatever oven temperature settings pie crust recipe recommends).
- Cool slightly before cutting. Delicious warm or cold. Refrigerate leftovers.
- Optional: Top each slice with whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon before serving.
These products can be purchased from LFM market members:

Vendor Updates
Fayette/Clark County
We will be at the Saturday market with cheeses, and on Sunday, Sorbet Cafe (that's our little satellite biz) will be bringing out our first batch of pawpaw sorbet, dairy free and made with coconut milk and a splash of lime juice which gives it an even more delicious tropical flavor. We'll also have salted caramel with goat cheese and cashews, organic mango-lime and fresh pineapple flavors. Just so you'll know, we never use dairy except in our flavors with goat cheese. Corn syrup is taboo (we use organic sugar), and the only thing we add for texture is arrowroot, natural and simple. So please come and taste the difference.
We'll have plenty of fresh chevre and Feta, of course, and both cold and hot spiced cider by the cup from Evans Orchards.
And thanks to everyone who came to visit the farm on the Follow the Farm Tour Saturday. We had way more than 100 people and the numbers are still out. The goats are still buzzing about who was the most charming. Seems to have been Honeybee and Magma from what they are telling me. And Beulah, my gallon and a half milker a day, is still strutting with her award as "best udder." We are trying to give her a break, but she refuses to quit her job.

Our next cheese making class is scheduled for Sunday October 20th. The class will fill up quickly, so sign up soon on our website.
We were featured on Food News and Chews on Fox TV Sunday night. Here's a link.
Our cheese is made from all natural JD Country Milk, a family owned Mennonite dairy farm in Logan County. The cows are pasture grazed and never given any antibiotics or hormones. Instead they are fed a vitamin enriched diet and all the grass they can eat. The milk is not homogenized and is pasteurized at just 145 degrees, then quickly cooled to preserve the natural flavor and enzymes that Mother Nature intended. We think the milk tastes better because the cows are happy. You won't see hydraulic presses and fancy modern equipment around here. Instead, we make our cheeses by hand using traditional European techniques to protect the delicate curds. This is a lot more work and very time consuming, but we believe it creates better cheeses with rich complex flavors. We hope you agree. Thanks for your support. See you at the market. Black Bag - mellow, full-bodied, soulful dark roast. A blend of Sumatra, Mexico, and Columbia coffee beans. Certified Organic and Fair Trade. Roasted on Thursday in downtown Paris, Kentucky and AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY AT ELMWOOD STOCK FARM at the Lexington Farmers' Market.
Everyone at Elmwood wants to thank you for your support of local farms and let you know how much we appreciate your attendance at the Lexington Farmers Market week after week. As the seasons change, we continue to work to offer you the highest quality USDA Certified Organic produce, eggs, and meats that we can.
We will be set up each Saturday downtown (Cheapside Park outdoors through Thanksgiving and Victorian Square indoors all winter long), and each Sunday on Southland Drive through October.
PRODUCE we are offering now includes Green Beans, Beets, Cabbages, Rainbow Swiss Chard, Summer Squash, Fall Squash, Kohlrabi, Leeks, Garlic, Bell Peppers, Hot Peppers, Turnips, Onions, Green Onions, Sweet Potatoes and more as new things are coming on each week.
EGGS We offer each market our certified organic eggs from free-ranging hens who live outdoors on grass pasture. Both whole dozen and half-dozens available, each egg is hand washed and inspected for cracks. Our hens are always outside, enjoying the green growing grass & clover and rewarding us with beautiful big brown eggs packed full of flavor, orangey color, and healthful omega-3-fatty acids. Each hen's diet includes certified organic grain which is non-gmo.
MEAT and POULTRY Each week we bring a complete inventory of our 100% grass-fed Angus organic beef, along with our certified organic whole chickens, cut-up chicken pieces, and flavorful hearty stewing hens. In addition, we have specialty beef sausages, chicken liver, bones for broth, and even bones for your pet!
Feel free to order ahead for quantity amounts or a particular cut for that special meal, and we'll have it ready for pickup at any of the farmers markets. View our website for special Beef & Chicken Bundles, and other quantities packages.
HERITAGE TURKEY TIME We take pre-orders for our holiday turkeys in person at the market or by email. At Elmwood, we care year-round for our own breeding flock in order to raise Bourbon Red (named after Bourbon County KY), Narragansett (the oldest known American turkey breed), and the Slate turkeys (also found on Slow Food's Ark of Taste that promotes the survival of near-extinct foods). Stop by the market or email the farm for more details on breeds, sizes and pricing.
ALL TURKEYS are Organic Certified free ranging turkeys that are raised outdoors on grass pasture. They are raised the old-fashioned way, on fresh green grass and clover pastures with wholesome grains, resulting in moist, flavorful turkey. Not only are Elmwood turkeys raised naturally, free from any synthetic inputs, flavor additives, or stimulants, but everything that every turkey eats is organically raised grain or grass pasture. You can taste the difference and you will know you are serving the best!
These days, more than ever, it's important to know the source of your family's food and you can look to our local organic farm to meet your body's nutritional needs resulting in good health. Visit our website to learn more, review our price lists, pre-order your special items, or contact Elmwood for more information (scroll up a little for a quick

Magic Beans Coffee Roasters {Website}{Facebook}
Fayette County
This week, we will be roasting our last batch of that exquisite Pacamara varietal coffee from Finca Los Congos in Nicaragua (photo:Jose Rene, Owner, Finas Los Congos) . When we first got this coffee back in March, we were actually a bit put off by its most prized characteristic: its audacious citrus-lime acidity. It seemed to be irrepressible, even at darker roasts.
So we pushed it to its limits, and our roast revealed a cup with layers of acidity - not just lime, but cherry, too - and a deep, bittersweet chocolate flavor and body. One tough critic deemed it "the single most drinkable coffee" he had ever had. Dang, that stuff was good.
Months later, tasting the coffee again after a respectful interlude, we wondered: Did we really taste all of those things in one cup? Or were we maybe just getting high on our own vapors? (There's always a danger when you get creative with adjectives that you'll start to believe your own hyperbole.) Nope. They were all there: Cherry, lime, chocolate bomb.
We look forward to offering another fine coffee from Los Congos next Spring after the current crop is harvested. In the meantime, this is your chance to stock up on one of the finest Nicaraguan coffees available anywhere.
We'll also have a fresh batch of our Sumatra Mandheling Fair Trade Organic as well as an assortment of other coffees from recent roasting sessions.
New fall crop of beautiful broccoli.

Saturday market, we will be bringing many varieties of APPLES, all grown on our farm. We will bring European and Asian PEARS also grown 100% on our farm! If you would like for us to hold something for you please contact us at (859) 987-6480. Our delicious spring and summer/fall raw orchard HONEY is available, but we need a call to bring it to you.
We have a variety list that we can hand out at the market which tells approximate ripening dates on fruit we will be picking.
Follow us on Facebook for updates each week. Come visit us at the Orchard and pick your own fruit from the brambles, vines or the trees! Red raspberries are still available at the orchard, call in advance to reserve pre-picked berries.
We also have PUMPKINS you can pick from the pumpkin patch.
Our website www.reedvalleyorchard.com will show the varieties of fruit that we have throughout the season. Email us info@reedvalleyorchard.com.
If weather permits, which means it's not raining, we will make CARAMEL APPLES and have them at the Saturday market. CIDER is ready.

September is the PERFECT time to plant gorgeous Oriental lilies in your garden! They are sensational garden performers here in the Bluegrass and it's easy to squeeze in a few, even in the most tightly-packed gardens. We'll have our own bulbs at the Market on Saturday, from the super frilly double 'Rose Lily' to the spectacular pure white giant 'Rialto' and several more varieties. We have photos and complete growing instructions (which are exceedingly simple) and with the showers forecast this weekend, it will be the absolute best time to plant these beauties!
Even though Fall is definitely in the air, we still have lots of marvelous late summer flowers, including fragrant Lemon Basil Zinnia bouquets and gorgeous Dahlias. We will also have a very limited amount of cut Lilies and Lisianthus - if you've got a hankering for them, please come early so you won't be disappointed.
Please don't hesitate to contact us on Facebook if you'd like to order flowers or have any questions. Hope to see you Saturday!

Food News & Chews TV Show with Chef Jeremy Ashby & Sylvia Lovely, Sundays 11p on Fox 56 WDKY, filmed an episode of the weekly show at Lexington Farmers Market. Chef Jeremy and Sylvia toured the market, discussed food news topics and chatted with vendors while collecting ingredients for the cooking segment. Chef & Sylvia have a great conversation with Jeff Dabbelt, Executive Director of LFM. They cover local sourcing of food, what is available year round and the positive impact of spending food dollars with local producers. Jeff, Sylvia and Chef all agree farmers markets build community. In our cooking segment, Chef makes a simple dish in under five minutes with ingredients he collected that morning in the market.
