Market News

Friends and Patrons of the Market,
On this Patriot Day spend time with friends and family. Reflect on past joys and sorrows. Envision grand plans for a hopeful future. And eat well.
We never know what the next moment holds for us, but take advantage of today. Be kind, show love, and live patiently with those who cause hassles. Maybe all that person needs is a friend and good meal. And you can surely provide both.
See You At Market,
Josh England

Seasonally Inspired Recipe:Quinoa Tabbouleh Salad |
Ever have half an onion, a handful of herbs, or a few slices of cucumber that you don't know how to use? Make them into a salad. Specifically, a quinoa salad. Quinoa is a grain found in the Northern Andres Mountains of South American, notably Equador. Quinoa is a complete protein and considered by some as a super food. When quinoa first enter the popular food scene there was a local shortage of the grain in South America. However, in recent years many of the social concerns have been alievated through better planning and compesation.
I advocate trying your own combinations to find what kind of salad composition best meets your preference, but I know that a recipe is a good guide. Today I've included a quick Quinoa Tabbouleh Salad from Mary at The Kitchen Paper.
Ingredients:(makes 5-8 servings)
Main Dish
- 1 ½ cups uncooked quinoa, rinsed
- 1 cup chopped parsley
- ½ cup chopped green onions
-
3 cups cherry tomatoes, quartered -
2 large cucumbers, cut into ¼" pieces -
⅓ cup chopped fresh mint -
2 shallots, diced -
¼ cup basil, chopped -
½ cup fresh lemon juice -
¼ cup olive oil -
½ tsp salt -
1 tsp freshly ground pepper
Directions:
- Cook the quinoa according to directions, and set aside to cool. If you're in a hurry, spread it on a cookie sheet and chill for 10 minutes.
- Combine all ingredients together in a large bowl, and toss to combine. Add more salt and pepper as needed.
- Let the mixture sit for a few hours before serving, for flavors to meld.
- Serve cold.
These products can be purchased from LFM market members:
- Parsley
- Green Onions
- Cherry Tomatoes
- Shallots
- Basil
- Mint
- Olive Oil
- Salt

When you get a chance, take a look at our new website and meet some of our critters. And you must follow the Crave Lexington website and FB page for news about this huge, fabulous food and music festival happening September 21 and 22 at MoonDance Amphitheater and all around town with pop-up events this month and next. Both our market and Bleugrass Chèvre are part of the tours on Saturday, the 21st.

Our cheese is made from all natural JD Country Milk, a family owned Mennonite dairy farm in Logan County. The cows are pasture grazed and never given any antibiotics or hormones. Instead they are fed a vitamin enriched diet and all the grass they can eat. The milk is not homogenized and is pasteurized at just 145 degrees, then quickly cooled to preserve the natural flavor and enzymes that Mother Nature intended. We think the milk tastes better because the cows are happy. You won't see hydraulic presses and fancy modern equipment around here. Instead, we make our cheeses by hand using traditional European techniques to protect the delicate curds. This is a lot more work and very time consuming, but we believe it creates better cheeses with rich complex flavors. We hope you agree. Thanks for your support. See you at the market. Food News & Chews TV Show with Chef Jeremy Ashby & Sylvia Lovely, Sundays 11p on Fox 56 WDKY, filmed an episode of the weekly show at Lexington Farmers Market. Chef Jeremy and Sylvia toured the market, discussed food news topics and chatted with vendors while collecting ingredients for the cooking segment. Chef & Sylvia have a great conversation with Jeff Dabbelt, Executive Director of LFM. They cover local sourcing of food, what is available year round and the positive impact of spending food dollars with local producers. Jeff, Sylvia and Chef all agree farmers markets build community.
