Seasonally Inspired Recipe:From Scratch Sloppy Joe
|
Serena at Serena Bakes Simply From Scratch says, "I love how easy they are to make. An easy dinner for a busy weeknight or when I need to feed the Hubby and his friends when their watching football. No slaving here!"
These sandwiches are easy, tasty, and use many summer time ingredients. My one change would be to substitute home-stewed tomatoes for the canned tomatoes.
Ingredients:(makes 2-3 servings)
- 1 tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 1/2 whole Large Onion, Diced
- 1 1/2 pounds Ground Beef
- 2 cloves Garlic, Minced
- 1 whole Bell Pepper, Seeded And Diced
- 28 ounces Canned Diced Tomatoes With Juice***
- 4 tablespoons Quick Oats
- 2 teaspoon Chili Powder
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
- 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Sea Salt
- 2 teaspoons Smoke Paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon Ground Cumin
- 1 teaspoon Black Pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon Sugar
- 5 whole Hamburger Buns or Large Crusty Dinner Rolls, Toasted (For Gluten Free Use Gluten Free Buns)
- 2 cups Grated Cheese, Optional
*** To use fresh tomatoes, start with about 2 pounds of fresh Roma tomatoes: blanch for 3 minutes, remove peel, dice, and simmer over medium heat with 2 Tablespoons of olive and a dash of salt for 10-20 minutes.
Directions:
- Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add oil and meat to the pan. Spread the meat around the pan and begin to break it up.
- Combine brown sugar and steak seasoning. Add sugar and spice mixture to the skillet and combine.
- When the meat has browned, add onion and red peppers to the skillet. Reduce heat to medium and cook onions, peppers, red wine vinegar and Worcestershire sauce with meat for 5 minutes.
- Add tomato sauce and paste to pan. Stir to combine. Reduce heat to simmer and cook Sloppy Joe mixture 5 minutes longer.
- Using a large spoon or ice cream scoop, pile sloppy meat onto toasted, buttered bun bottoms and cover with bun tops.
These products can be purchased from LFM market members:
- Onions
- Olive Oil
- Ground Beef
- Garlic
- Bell Pepper
- Tomatoes
- Cheese
- Rolls

Our cheese is made from all natural JD Country Milk, a family owned Mennonite dairy farm in Logan County. The cows are pasture grazed and never given any antibiotics or hormones. Instead they are fed a vitamin enriched diet and all the grass they can eat. The milk is not homogenized and is pasteurized at just 145 degrees, then quickly cooled to preserve the natural flavor and enzymes that Mother Nature intended. We think the milk tastes better because the cows are happy. You won't see hydraulic presses and fancy modern equipment around here. Instead, we make our cheeses by hand using traditional European techniques to protect the delicate curds. This is a lot more work and very time consuming, but we believe it creates better cheeses with rich complex flavors. We hope you agree. Thanks for your support. See you at the market. Boone Creek Creamery 859-402-2364 www.boonecreekcreamery.com ed2@kycheese.com Bourbon County " Fair Trade, certified organic, handcrafted and utterly delicious " the Lexington Herald-Leader Black Bag, a soulful dark roast. Naturally low in acidity, this is a mellow and full-bodied blend of Sumatra, Mexico and Columbia coffee beans. Brown Bag, Caffe Journey. Moka-Java, il viaggio in velvet. Gold Bag, Marco's Finest, this cup possesses a finely integrated and lively acidity creating an elegantly textured palate. Tan Bag, Kenya Peaberry blended with a little dark-roasted Sumatra. Blue Bag, palate-cleansing breakfast blend. Guatemala + Honduras in a toasty sweet light roast. Green Bag, water processed decaf. No chemicals used in decaffeination. All the flavor and body without the lovely, addictive buzz. Roasted in downtown Paris Kentucky.

Clark County We'd like to introduce you to Dahlia 'Nick Sr', an absolute stunner and the first of our 40+ varieties of Dahlias that are just now beginning to bloom. We have two things to say about this ... (1) It's about darn time and (2) they're gonna be worth it! We sourced the tubers from two awesome growers in the Northwest and are really, really looking forward to offering them to you beginning with a few stems this week. More to come! Also this week we have: - Oriental lily 'Gracia' - is a new one for us. She's the most luscious shade of pale pink and cream and a great fragrance to boot. Just began blooming as we write this and Charlie made a special note about her ... 'Excellent!"
- Lemon Basil & Zinnia bouquets - with the great fragrance of fresh-squeezed lemon and packed with loads of summer colors. The basil also tends to root in water, so you'll have it to add to salsas and other summer treats for weeks.
- Lisianthus - we'll have all five color of Lisianthus this week: pure white, deep dark purple, lavender and white blush, sweet rose and lemony yellow. And for those who just can't get enough of this long-lasting former Cut Flower of the Year, you can get an entire bucket for $50. We agree with those who buy them this way ... summer is too short to not to surround yourself with flowers.
If there's anything we can do in the way of a special order, regular delivery or planning for a future event, please send us a message on Facebook or give us a call. Food News & Chews TV Show with Chef Jeremy Ashby & Sylvia Lovely, Sundays 11p on Fox 56 WDKY, filmed an episode of the weekly show at Lexington Farmers Market. Chef Jeremy and Sylvia toured the market, discussed food news topics and chatted with vendors while collecting ingredients for the cooking segment. Chef & Sylvia have a great conversation with Jeff Dabbelt, Executive Director of LFM. They cover local sourcing of food, what is available year round and the positive impact of spending food dollars with local producers. Jeff, Sylvia and Chef all agree farmers markets build community. In our cooking segment, Chef makes a simple dish in under five minutes with ingredients he collected that morning in the market.
