SeasonalRecipe
Seasonally Inspired Recipe:
Charred Corn Salad
Today's recipe comes from the Bon Apptit Test Kicthen

"No room on the grill? Cut the kernels from the cobs and char with 1 Tbsp. olive oil in a cast-iron skillet on the stove."

Ingredients:
(makes 4 servings)
  • 12 ears of corn, husked
  • 6 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 1 cup thinly sliced red onion
  • 2 large tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 cup (loosely packed) fresh basil leaves, large leaves torn
  • 1/3 cup (or more) fresh lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme
  • Kosher salt, freshly ground pepper

Directions:

  1. Build a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill, or heat a gas grill to high. Rub corn with 1 Tbsp. oil. Grill, turning frequently, until corn is charred and heated through, 10-12 minutes.
  2. Remove from grill; when cool enough to handle, cut kernels from cobs and transfer to a large bowl. DO AHEAD: Corn can be made 3 hours ahead. Let stand at room temperature.
  3. Place onion in a strainer and rinse with cold water to mellow its flavor. Drain well. Mix onion, remaining 5 Tbsp. oil, tomatoes, basil, 1/3 cup lime juice, and thyme into corn. Season to taste with salt, pepper, and more lime juice, if desired
These products can be purchased from LFM market members:
  • Corn
  • Olive Oil
  • Red Onion
  • Tomatoes
  • Basil
  • Thyme
  • Salt

Boone Creek Creamery {Website} {Facebook}
Fayette County

We were featured on Food News and Chews on Fox TV Sunday night. Here's a link.

Our cheese is made from all natural JD Country Milk, a family owned Mennonite dairy farm in Logan County. The cows are pasture grazed and never given any antibiotics or hormones. Instead they are fed a vitamin enriched diet and all the grass they can eat. The milk is not homogenized and is pasteurized at just 145 degrees, then quickly cooled to preserve the natural flavor and enzymes that Mother Nature intended. We think the milk tastes better because the cows are happy.

You won't see hydraulic presses and fancy modern equipment around here. Instead, we make our cheeses by hand using traditional European techniques to protect the delicate curds. This is a lot more work and very time consuming, but we believe it creates better cheeses with rich complex flavors. We hope you agree.

Thanks for your support. See you at the market.

Magic Beans Coffee Roasters {Website} {Facebook}

Fayette County

Magic Beans Coffee Roasters will be at the Saturday and Sunday markets with all of our current featured single-origin coffees this week.

Mexico Chiapas (Triunfo Verde Co-Op): This certified organic, shade-grown, Fair Trade coffee comes from farms located in the buffer zone of El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve, high in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas. One of the world's most diverse forest reserves, El Triunfo serves as a refuge to thousands of plant and animal species. The cup is bright, sweet, mild, and balanced, with aromas of caramel corn, a rich body and a smooth finish. This is an all-day drinker.

Sumatra Mandheling: Sumatran coffees are known for their mild acidity, aromas of earth, wood, and spice, and a great big, bouncy body. This particular lot, also certified organic and Fair Trade, is an exceptionally good example of the classic Indonesian profile, and it provides a very satisfying experience in the cup. Fresh from the roaster, vegetal and herbaceous aromas dominate. After a few days of rest, smoky/spicy aromas come to the fore. In the cup, you'll find a soft, heavy body, and savory flavors of dark chocolate and spice. Very smooth and comforting, this makes a great mid-afternoon cup (especially if you're having a hard day). If you love Indonesian coffees, this one is for you.

Ethiopia Yirgachefe Natural (Konga Co-Op): This is an outstanding Yirgachefe, packing all of the prized characteristics of an Ethiopian natural process coffee into one tiny little bean. It has fruit-like, wild berry aromas, a gentle but well-expressed acidity, notes of cinammon and dark chocolate, and a light body with a clean finish. This is one of those rare offerings that has the ability to entirely change the way people think about coffee. Other roasters are selling these very same beans for as much as $18 per 12-ounce bag. We're offering this premium selection for our usual price of $12. Why? Because we like you.

Mexico Cafe Siesta (Decaffeinated, Water Process): This coffee has a similar flavor to our Mexico Chiapas, and, like that coffee, it is certified organic and Fair Trade. The main difference is that this one has been decaffeinated. The decaffeination process makes the beans roast up a bit differently, so they look a bit darker and shinier. But they taste great, and they won't keep you up all night.

We'll also be brewing individual cups at our pourover bar. Want to share some brewing tips or pick up some new ones yourself? Come by our booth and talk to us!

Peaches! Peaches! Peaches!

Our sweet juicy peaches are ripe for the pickin'.  Good every day, all day!  Even help soothe your afternoon hunger pangs with Mrs. Mary's tree-ripened peaches!  No need to reach for the vending machine change, instead sink your teeth into some peachy goodness.  And while you're at it, get enough for the entire office or even your grouchy uncle's pet hippo Harry.  These peaches are so tasty they'll even turn that snake face into a smile!

Lamb is back in stock in our coolers this weekend.  We'll have all cuts with us this Saturday and Sunday until they sell out.  Chops, shoulder roasts, legs, racks.  Succulent Kentucky grown lamb ready for your table.

This week you'll find us again with the grill fired up at Cheapside on Saturday and Southland on Sunday.  If you get out of your car at either location and get a whiff of those succulent burgers and brats; just follow your nose and bring your appetite.  The burgers and brats are made from our beef as well as the onions and soon tomatoes from our garden.  These burgers aren't those little thin things you get from the drive thru.  These are handmade, thick, juicy and topped with some of the market's best local cheeses.  Place your orders for lunch or breakfast when you first get to the market, do some shopping and then stop by to pick up your meal.  There's also plenty of sweet tea, lemonade and other drinks available.  We'll also be at Commonwealth Stadium on Wednesday.

We'll have vegetables, plenty of candy onions as well as cabbage, corn, squash and potatoes.  Great on the grill or in your favorite recipes.  There'll be plenty of jams, including blackberry and blackberry peach, as well as plenty of breads and other baked goods.  Come on down.  Bring your grocery list and your appetite.  There's plenty of great surprises to be discovered at the market!

Wow, the Lisianthus are REALLY sensational this year! Fabulous colors, loads of ruffly double blooms and tons of buds on big strong stems. They absolutely sparkle in the Zinnia and Lemon Basil bouquets and are almost other-worldly in a bouquet by themselves. We will have five colors at the Market on Saturday (and we think we'll be at the Thursday Market too): blue blush (a luscious creamy and lavender), pure white, the palest lemon yellow, soft rose and deep, dark purple.

Also, if one bunch of Lisianthus just isn't enough to satisfy your flower sweet-tooth, we are also offering them "by the bucket" for $50. You can mix and match colors or choose your one favorite. Either way, we'll pack the bucket so it's ready for you to arrange any which way you'd like. It's the perfect opportunity to split a bucket with a friend or send a bouquet to anyone who might need a sweet summer pick-me-up.

This is just a bit of what we'll have at the Market this week ... just check out our Facebook site for more info and photos. Please let us know if you'd like to reserve flowers or if we can put together a special bouquet or delivery for you. Give us a call at 859-771-2085 or send a note through Facebook anytime.

Thanks so much for your support - we look forward to seeing you Saturday, and Thursday this week, too!

Food News & Chews TV Show with Chef Jeremy Ashby & Sylvia Lovely, Sundays 11p on Fox 56 WDKY, filmed an episode of the weekly show at Lexington Farmers Market.  Chef Jeremy and Sylvia toured the market, discussed food news topics and chatted with vendors while collecting ingredients for the cooking segment.  Chef & Sylvia have a great conversation with Jeff Dabbelt, Executive Director of LFM.  They cover local sourcing of food, what is available year round and the positive impact of spending food dollars with local producers.  Jeff, Sylvia and Chef all agree farmers markets build community.  In our cooking segment, Chef makes a simple dish in under five minutes with ingredients he collected that morning in the market.  Tune in for a taste of the sights and sounds of the Lexington Farmers Market!  Click Food News & Chews: Lexington Farmers Market Edition to view the episode!

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio

to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so pleasepledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
