Market News Friends and Patrons of the Market,
It's that time of year again! We are excited to announce that our annual A Taste of the Farm Dinner will take place on August 24th from 5:30-8:30pm at the Fifth Third Bank Pavilion. Stop by the information booth for more information.
This weekend also looks to be another hot one. So drink plenty of water, eat plenty of local food, and spend time shopping and getting to know the farmers at your Lexington Farmers' Market. The market offers you a wide range of choices and the farmers offer a breadth of knowledge about the food they provide for you. If you have questions, be sure ask your farmer.
See you at market,

Our Markets
Now that we are into peak farmers' market season, we have markets 5 days each week. On Tuesday and Thursday we are at the corner of Broadway and Maxwell from 7am - 3pm.
Every Wednesday from 3pm-6pm stop by the Lexington Farmers' Market at UK. It's located near the University of Kentucky's Commonwealth Stadium on the corner of University Drive and Alumni Drive.
This market is open to everyone, not just UK employees and students.
On Saturday, you'll find your favorite farmers set up with tables full of fresh, seasonal products at Cheapside Park from 7am-3pm.
On Sunday, follow us to market on Southland Drive from 10am-2pm for another taste of seasonal produce.
Remember, free parking is available at all of our market locations. On Saturday, you may park in the Financial Center garage and in any metered street spot for FREE! There is a map below!

Seasonally Inspired Recipe:Kale & Bacon Pasta
|
Des at Life's Ambrosia was looking for a simple way to use all the kale that she had in a simple, summery way. She ended up with this great after-work meal.
Ingredients:(makes 4-6 servings) - 2 cups chopped kale, packed
- 3 garlic cloves, chopped
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2/3 cup olive oil
- salt and pepper
- 1 (13.25 oz) package whole grain linguine
- 3/4 pound bacon, diced
Directions:
- Place kale and garlic in a food processor and process until kale and garlic are finely minced. Add the cheese. Turn on food processor. With food processor running, slowly drizzle in olive oil until the mixture is smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
- Bring a large pot of water to boil. Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain.
- While pasta is cooking, cook bacon over medium heat until browned and cook through. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the bacon to a paper towel lined plate.
- Toss hot pasta with pesto and bacon. Serve with more grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
These products can be purchased from LFM market members:
- Kale
- Garlic
- Parmesan Cheese
- Olive Oil
- Salt
- Whole Wheat Pasta
- Bacon

Vendor Updates Madison County Summer is upon us, we're so glad our garlic is housed safely in the barn, and hopefully, onions and shallots wil be, as well before the next rain. This week we'll have lots of tender BABY CILANTRO, our beautiful MIXED LETTUCES (last week for a while!), delicious KALE, CANDY ONIONS, FRESH SHALLOTS, and 2 varieties of FRESH GARLIC.....California Early (mild) and Music (strong). Maybe even some in bags! GARLIC POWDERS too, of course! Along with our own offerings, we'll have hydroponically grown BUTTERHEAD LETTUCE from Vibrant Greens in Madison County, and all the regular PORK and CHEESE from Stone Cross Farm, Grass Finished BEEF from Colcord Farm, Kentucky LAMB (including LAMB CHOPS and RACKS) and more! Tomatoes are in season and we have the BACON and LETTUCE to make the perfect BLT! Smear a little of our CHAMPAGNE DRESSING on your bread in place of mayo for a gourmet treat! We'll also have many choices of ARTISAN BREADS from Sunrise Bakery from which to choose. And for something as an alternative to butter on your sweet corn, try our GARLIC SCAPE PESTO! Fayette County We were featured on Food News and Chews on Fox TV Sunday night. Here's a link.
Our cheese is made from all natural JD Country Milk, a family owned Mennonite dairy farm in Logan County. The cows are pasture grazed and never given any antibiotics or hormones. Instead they are fed a vitamin enriched diet and all the grass they can eat. The milk is not homogenized and is pasteurized at just 145 degrees, then quickly cooled to preserve the natural flavor and enzymes that Mother Nature intended. We think the milk tastes better because the cows are happy. You won't see hydraulic presses and fancy modern equipment around here. Instead, we make our cheeses by hand using traditional European techniques to protect the delicate curds. This is a lot more work and very time consuming, but we believe it creates better cheeses with rich complex flavors. We hope you agree. Thanks for your support. See you at the market. Boone Creek Creamery 859-402-2364 www.boonecreekcreamery.com ed2@kycheese.com Bourbon County I pulled off the road and cut the engine. These puzzlements I get myself into. Then, I need to puzzle it out. This seemed a good spot. Not a sound - except my heartbeat. Presumably, my heart, or, somebody was locked in the trunk of the car and quite upset about it. Seated - sprawled - on the passenger seat next to me, unconscious, it appears, is Lexington's most famous murder mystery author and honey bee scholar. An occasional snore reassures me that the slumbering diva has not become a character from one of her novels yet herself. Yet herself ? Where is this murky night taking me ? There were mysteries aplenty here in the land of horses, history and high jinks. I need to get to Downtown Lexington, to the Lexington Farmers Market, there under the sign of the 5/3 brotherhood, were perhaps some answers to my puzzlement. There were melons, ripe red tomatoes and sexy lilies, And, there were fragrant crepes sizzling gently on an iron skillet. There were secrets and possibly high jinks, murder and mystery. In the car's trunk I carried two bound pastry chefs. In the back seat, several dozen pecan pies. If central Kentucky possessed an oceanfront, I'd likely be headed now - in this darkness - to a pier. But we're headed for Cheapside Park. And should arrive by 7 AM. If I could only get my passenger to wake up and tell me . . . what ? If I could only get my prisoners in the back to shut up and go to sleep. To be continued. Scott County
We appreciate seeing so many familiar faces returning to the markets on Saturday and Sunday outdoors, as well as lots of new people just moving to the area. We will continue to attend each market each week including Tues, Wed, Thurs, rain or sun or something in between - hope to see you as well!

The outdoor Lexington Farmers Markets for 2013 are now open. Our home is located one block north (toward downtown) of the intersection of Southland Drive and Nicholasville Road. Turn on Goodrich Avenue and take the first driveway on your right, and you will be in our back yard. There will be a silver travel trailer (Airstream) under an awning directly in front of you. Your honey will be on the back porch. If we are not home, just leave the money on the counter. There is change in a small jar on the counter if you need some. Magic Beans Coffee Roasters {Website} {Facebook}
Fayette County This week we are introducing our Sumatra Mandheling, which will be the "standard" Indonesian offering in our roasting rotation from now through the fall. Dark and smooth, savory, with an exotic spice aroma and a heavy body. A cup of this will make everything all right. It's also Fair Trade and certified organic. Sumatran coffees are known for their mild acidity, aromas of earth, wood, and spice, and a great big, bouncy body. Much of their characteristic flavor comes from the unique Indonesian "wet hull" process called Giling Basah, in which the inner skin or "parchment" layer is removed from the green coffee bean while it is still wet, rather than after drying. This process can produce an exotic and enticing cup, but it can also lead to some "funky" or "off" flavors if not carefully controlled. This particular lot is an exceptionally good example of the classic Indonesian profile, and it provides a very satisfying experience in the cup. Our regular lineup through the fall will consist of the following coffees: Each of these coffees will be available in 12-ounce bags of whole beans, or as brewed-to-order cups from our pour-over bar. More information is available online at http://www.magicbeanscoffee.com/our-starting-lineup. Want to talk about coffee? Come by and see us! Peaches! Peaches! Peaches!
Our sweet juicy peaches are ripe for the pickin'. Good every day, all day! Even help soothe your afternoon hunger pangs with Mrs. Mary's tree-ripened peaches! No need to reach for the vending machine change, instead sink your teeth into some peachy goodness. And while you're at it, get enough for the entire office or even your grouchy sister's brother's mother's cousin's dentist's fish Nemo. These peaches are so tasty they'll even turn that fish face into a smile!
Quarles Farm {Website} {Facebook}
Shelby County
After last week's deluge of rain everything is still sopping wet here in Shelby County and the chance of severe thunderstorms comes again this afternoon. And someone turned up the thermostat outside this week. Animals are looking for cool places trying so seek relief from the humidity and cool places in this weather are certainly in short supply!
This week you'll find us again with the grill fired up at Cheapside on Saturday and Southland on Sunday. If you get out of your car at either location and get a whiff of those succulent burgers and brats, just follow your nose and bring your appetite. The burgers and brats are made from our beef as well as the onions and soon tomatoes from our garden. These burgers aren't those little thin things you get from the drive thru. These are hand made, thick, juicy and topped with some of the market's best local cheeses. Place your orders for lunch or breakfast when you first get to the market, do some shopping and then stop by to pick up your meal. There's also plenty of sweet tea, lemonade and other drinks available. We'll also be at Commonwealth Stadium on Wednesday.
The coolers will be full of beef and lamb, the tables full of breads, jams, relishes and plenty of veggies. Candy onions are ready and there's lots of other flavorful selections to be had. Stop in , stay a while. We're waiting for you....

This week we will have some GREAT flowers, including:
- At least two varieties of Oriental lily: the awesome double, 'Roselily' and 'Merostar,' which is a gigantic red Oriental with white edges and fabulous fragrance. Both are magnificent as cut flowers.
- TWO varieties of pollenless sunflowers which we put together in a bouquet with Zebra grass. If you have a tall vase or stone crock, a couple of bunches of these sunflowers and grass bouquets make a stunning centerpiece for a very modest cost.
- Look forward to the classic white lisianthus this Saturday at the Lexington farmers market! It has an incredibly long vase life and is non-fragrant.!
- Lemon basil zinnia bouquets will be packed with fragrant (and edible!) lemon basil, brightly colored zinnias and snapdragons, white yarrow and more.
- Sweet peas are a flower that we don't see a lot, outside of florists, this time of year. We sourced our seed from Laughing Owl nursery in England because they're developing some of the best cut flower sweet peas in the world. We're growing them in the greenhouse, where we can keep it cooler, and they're almost 10 feet tall. We cut stems long, with blooming flowers, buds and the curly tendrils.
Saturday looks to be entirely pleasant this week, so we hope you'll start off your day at the Lexington Farmers' Market! As always, just send us a note on Facebook or give us a call (859-771-2085) if you want to reserve flowers, have a question, or are wanting tot have some very special flowers for a very special event. We'd love to help!
Thanks very much for buying local and we hope to see you soon!

Food News & Chews TV Show with Chef Jeremy Ashby & Sylvia Lovely, Sundays 11p on Fox 56 WDKY, filmed an episode of the weekly show at Lexington Farmers Market. Chef Jeremy and Sylvia toured the market, discussed food news topics and chatted with vendors while collecting ingredients for the cooking segment. Chef & Sylvia have a great conversation with Jeff Dabbelt, Executive Director of LFM. They cover local sourcing of food, what is available year round and the positive impact of spending food dollars with local producers. Jeff, Sylvia and Chef all agree farmers markets build community. In Your Community What better place to Eat Like It's Summer than the Lexington Farmers' Market? That's the message we've been spreading around town at local businesses, community organizations, and elementary schools. This week, we have been to the YMCA and The Kidz Club with 'weird' summer produce in hand. The delicious weirdos have helped to spark great discussion with youth and young adults, alike. Next week we'll be serving up fresh cherry tomatoes at Booker T. Washington's summer feeding programs. Any area children can stop by, eat a hot lunch, and participate in our cherry tomato taste test. If you see us around town, rhubarb and ground cherries in tow, be sure to come say hello! Stephanie Hopkins Food Desert Initiative Coordinator Stephanie@lexingtonfarmersmarket.com

WUKY
WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so pleasepledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
