Marketnews
Market News

Friends and Patrons of the Market,

This weekend looks to be a stark contrast to the weather from last week.  Gone are the warnings of 6 inches of rain in 3 days.  Gone are the gloomy, gray skies. And gone are the lugubrious*  feelings associated with a drenched holiday.
Now we have firefly filled evenings, sun soaked afternoons, and a weekend forecast that makes shopping at your Lexington Farmers' Market the perfect activity.

In the coming weeks we also have many opportunities for individuals and group volunteers.  We need individual volunteers each Saturday and Sunday to make sure the market operates smoothly.  Individuals will work behind-the-scenes with the market management on a variety of retail and community relations tasks.  Groups will work on a variety of projects that range from cleaning up to marketing.  For all volunteering questions and to signup please email Stephanie Hopkins at stephanie@lexingtonfarmersmarket.com.

See you at market,

Josh England
Lexington Farmers' Market Assistant Manager

*This was the vocabulary of the day for a 3 ("and half!") year old visiting market.  It means gloomy, dismal, or mourful.

Our Markets
Now that we are into peak farmers' market season, we have markets 5 days each week. On Tuesday and Thursday we are at the corner of Broadway and Maxwell from 7am - 3pm.

Every Wednesday from 3pm-6pm stop by the Lexington Farmers' Market at UK. It's located near the University of Kentucky's Commonwealth Stadium on the corner of University Drive and Alumni Drive.
This market is open to everyone, not just UK employees and students.

On Saturday, you'll find your favorite farmers set up with tables full of fresh, seasonal products at Cheapside Park from 7am-3pm.

On Sunday, follow us to market on Southland Drive from 10am-2pm for another taste of seasonal produce.

Remember, free parking is available at all of our market locations. On Saturday, you may park in the Financial Center garage and in any metered street spot for FREE!  There is a map below!

Best Family Farm

Many thanks to all the loyal market supporters who braved the rains last Saturday and came down to shop as though it was a beautiful day!  We thought Sunday was going to go the same way, but just after opening, the sun came out!!  What a joy after so many days of rain, rain and more rain!  The market rocked!

We spent our 4th of July "holiday" making GARLIC SCAPE PESTO (almost 40 gallons!), and made some more after Sunday market, so we've got about 60 gallons safely stored away at this point.  It feels great to have it done, but it sure makes for a tired couple of weeks!

This week we'll have lots of tender BABY CILANTRO, our beautiful MIXED LETTUCES, delicious KALE, CANDY ONIONS, FRESH SHALLOTS, and 2 varieties of FRESH GARLIC.....California Early (mild) and Music (strong).  Maybe even some in bags!  GARLIC POWDERS too, of course!

Along with our own offerings, we'll have hydroponically grown BUTTERHEAD LETTUCE from Vibrant Greens in Madison County, and all the regular PORK from Stone Cross Farm, Grass Finished BEEF from Colcord Farm, Kentucky LAMB and more!

Tomatoes are in season and we have the BACON and LETTUCE to make the perfect BLT!  Smear a little of our CHAMPAGNE DRESSING on your bread in place of mayo for a gourmet treat!  We'll also have many choices of ARTISAN BREADS from Sunrise Bakery from which to choose.

And for something as an alternative to butter on your sweet corn, try our GARLIC SCAPE PESTO!

Our photo this week is of a mother hummingbird sitting on her nest a few years ago.  We feel so fortunate to have seen this once in our lifetime, as they are pretty rare to find.  Taking the photos was NOT easy!  The nest was in a small tree on the side of a steep hill, and we had to balance a ladder for me to climb up to look in the nest.  Well worth the struggle!!

So far the weather looks good for this weekend, so grab a friend and come on down!

Boone Creek Creamery {Website} {Facebook}
Fayette County

We were featured on Food News and Chews on Fox TV Sunday night. Here's a link.

Our cheese is made from all natural JD Country Milk, a family owned Mennonite dairy farm in Logan County. The cows are pasture grazed and never given any antibiotics or hormones. Instead they are fed a vitamin enriched diet and all the grass they can eat. The milk is not homogenized and is pasteurized at just 145 degrees, then quickly cooled to preserve the natural flavor and enzymes that Mother Nature intended. We think the milk tastes better because the cows are happy.

You won't see hydraulic presses and fancy modern equipment around here. Instead, we make our cheeses by hand using traditional European techniques to protect the delicate curds. This is a lot more work and very time consuming, but we believe it creates better cheeses with rich complex flavors. We hope you agree.

Thanks for your support. See you at the market.

Magic Beans Coffee Roasters {Website} {Facebook}

Fayette County

Big, exciting changes are underway at the Magic Beans Roasting Studio! Ever since we started, last December, we have have introduced a new "featured" coffee each month. We have offered a variety of different single-origin coffees, and our selection has varied from week to week. Now, we are regularly selling enough coffee that we can start roasting twice a week. This will enable us to offer three different coffees in a regular rotation, in addition to our monthly featured origin. Our aim is to always have available one coffee from each of the major growing regions: The Americas and the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East, and Indonesia and the Far East.

Our regular lineup through the fall will consist of the following coffees:

We'll have the Mexican and the Ethiopian available by the bag and brewed to order at our pour-over coffee bar starting this week. We'll have the Sumatran coffee available starting Saturday, July 20. Each of these coffees will be roasted on average three times a month, or about once every 10 days. For those who demand the ultimate in freshness, check out our Roasting Schedule online. We will always have at least one coffee that was roasted within the past three or four days.

Got coffee questions? Come by and talk to us!

Peaches! Peaches! Peaches!

Our sweet juicy peaches are ripe for the pickin'.  Good every day, all day!  Even help soothe your afternoon hunger pangs with Mrs. Mary's tree-ripened peaches!  No need to reach for the vending machine change, instead sink your teeth into some peachy goodness.  And while you're at it, get enough for the entire office or even your grouchy sister's brother's mother's cousin's consin's dog Rover.  These peaches are so tasty they'll even put a smile on her face!

McMaine Farms

Madison County

This week we will have yellow squash, zucchini, zephyr and pattypan squash.  We will have all sizes of slicing and pickling cucumbers.  There will be many varieties of eggplants and lots of cherry tomatoes.  And for peppers, we will have both hot and sweet banana, cayenne, and jalapeno.

Quarles Farm {Website} {Facebook}

Shelby County

After last week's deluge of rain everything is still sopping wet here in Shelby County and the chance of severe thunderstorms comes again this afternoon.  And someone turned up the thermostat outside this week.  Animals are looking for cool places trying so seek relief from the humidity and cool places in this weather are certainly in short supply!

This week you'll find us again with the grill fired up at Cheapside on Saturday and Southland on Sunday.  If you get out of your car at either location and get a whiff of those succulent burgers and brats, just follow your nose and bring your appetite.  The burgers and brats are made from our beef as well as the onions and soon tomatoes from our garden.  These burgers aren't those little thin things you get from the drive thru.  These are hand made, thick, juicy and topped with some of the market's best local cheeses.  Place your orders for lunch or breakfast when you first get to the market, do some shopping and then stop by to pick up your meal.  There's also plenty of sweet tea, lemonade and other drinks available.  We'll also be at Commonwealth Stadium on Wednesday.

The coolers will be full of beef and lamb, the tables full of breads, jams, relishes and plenty of veggies.  Candy onions are ready and there's lots of other flavorful selections to be had.  Stop in , stay a while.  We're waiting for you....

Follow us on  Facebook or check out our website.

Three Toads Farm {Facebook}
Clark County

This week we will have some GREAT flowers, including:

  • At least two varieties of Oriental lily: the awesome double, 'Roselily' (photo) and 'Merostar,' which is a gigantic red Oriental with white edges and fabulous fragrance. Both are magnificent as cut flowers.
  • TWO varieties of pollenless sunflowers which we put together in a bouquet with Zebra grass. If you have a tall vase or stone crock, a couple of bunches of these sunflowers and grass bouquets make a stunning centerpiece for a very modest cost.
  • Soft pink bunches of Lisianthus. This was named Cut Flower of the Year a few years back for good reason. Lisianthus is very tricky to grow, but as a cut flower, it lasts 3 weeks in the vase, sending out wave after wave of new blooms. While we grow several colors, the pink has decided to get a head start on the others!
  • Lemon basil zinnia bouquets will be packed with fragrant (and edible!) lemon basil, brightly colored zinnias and snapdragons, white yarrow and more.
  • Sweet peas are a flower that we don't see a lot, outside of florists, this time of year. We sourced our seed from Laughing Owl nursery in England because they're developing some of the best cut flower sweet peas in the world. We're growing them in the greenhouse, where we can keep it cooler, and they're almost 10 feet tall. We cut stems long, with blooming flowers, buds and the curly tendrils.

Saturday looks to be entirely pleasant this week, so we hope you'll start off your day at the Lexington Farmers' Market! As always, just send us a note on Facebook or give us a call (859-771-2085) if you want to reserve flowers, have a question, or are wanting tot have some very special flowers for a very special event. We'd love to help!

Thanks very much for buying local and we hope to see you soon!

Food News & Chews TV Show with Chef Jeremy Ashby & Sylvia Lovely, Sundays 11p on Fox 56 WDKY, filmed an episode of the weekly show at Lexington Farmers Market.  Chef Jeremy and Sylvia toured the market, discussed food news topics and chatted with vendors while collecting ingredients for the cooking segment.  Chef & Sylvia have a great conversation with Jeff Dabbelt, Executive Director of LFM.  They cover local sourcing of food, what is available year round and the positive impact of spending food dollars with local producers.  Jeff, Sylvia and Chef all agree farmers markets build community.  In our cooking segment, Chef makes a simple dish in under five minutes with ingredients he collected that morning in the market.  Tune in for a taste of the sights and sounds of the Lexington Farmers Market!  Click Food News & Chews: Lexington Farmers Market Edition to view the episode!

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so pleasepledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
