WUKY Farmers Market Report
SeasonalRecipe
Seasonal Inspired Recipe:
Fried Green Tomatoes
This week's recipe is from Bobby at BlogChef.net.  If you've ever had a perfectly fried green-tomato--one that was juicy and tangy and delicious--and wondered how to recreate it, this is a simple way that will have you eating in no time!

Ingredients:
(makes 4 servings)

4 large green tomatoes
2 eggs
½ cup milk
1 cup all-purpose flour
½ cup cornmeal
½ cup breadcrumbs
2 teaspoons kosher salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 quart vegetable oil (for frying)

Directions:
  1. Slice each tomato into about ½ inch thick slices. Discard the ends. In a medium bowl whisk eggs and milk until well combined. Pour flour onto a plate. On a pie plate or bowl combine bread crumbs, cornmeal, salt and pepper. Roll each tomato slice in flour, then dip in egg mixture and then dredge in cornmeal/breadcrumb mixture until evenly coated. Repeat until all slices are coated.
  2.  In a large skillet add oil, so that the oil is about ½" deep in the pan. Heat to medium-high heat. Add tomatoes to the pan (until the pan is full but tomatoes should not be touching each other). Fry until tomatoes are brown on the bottom, flip over and brown on the other side. Remove from the pan and drain on paper towels.

These products can be purchased from LFM market members:

I am taking the year off to write.  If I have any honey this year, it will be sold at Blue Moon Farm.  I want to take this opportunity to thank all my customers who have been loyal over the years and to the Lexington Farmers' Market which has been so wonderful to me both personally and professionally.  And I liked to thank my bees which have worked so hard to produce some of the best honey this state has ever seen.  You rock, girls!

My goodness garlic harvest is a tired time around here!!  Because the ground was so wet, the roots of the garlic are all packed with dried mud, making them weigh twice as much as usual.  Leo has to climb into the rafters of the barn to hang the sticks like tobacco on the rails, so he's a pretty worn out turkey right now.  None of the other chores eases off for harvest time, so life is hectic and sleep is short!

The Fourth of July is a week from Thursday!!  Is that even possible already???  We can help you get ready for your Independence Day grilling!!   We've got all kinds of great meats to barbeque......LAMB CHOPS, GRASS FINISHED BEEF BURGERS, all kinds of PORK SAUSAGES, PORK CHOPS, STEAKS, RACK of LAMB and even a whole BEEF TENDERLOIN (and steaks are 30% off!).  How about a "Mixed Grill"?? Choose your favorite sausages, add some FRESH GARLIC BULBS, CANDY ONIONS or fresh SHALLOTS and GARLIC SCAPES for seasoning.........I can smell it now!

We'll have hydroponically grown salad greens and BASIL from VIBRANT GREENS in Madison Co.  Come take a look at them.....they are just beautiful!

We'll have lots of great Stone Cross Farm SMOKED BACON, BREAKFAST SAUSAGE (Medium, Hot, Extra Sage) and Piggie Links (Mild) for your holiday weekend leisurely breakfasts, and CINNAMON BUNS, CROISSANTS, and MUFFINS, or maybe a GARLIC BAGEL!  Try one with some of Bleugrass Chevre's soft goat cheese!

You know what's for dessert!  GARLIC CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES!!  You haven't lived til you've tried one!

CANDY ONIONS, FRESH SHALLOTS, FRESH CUT ROSEMARY (cilantro will be back next week!)  possibly the first of our own fresh cut BASIL this week.

We still have a few of Abigail's adorable 2oz HONEY BEARS to hold us until the honey harvest takes place.

Something else you really must try......FRESHLY HARVESTED GARLIC BULBS with the tops left on.  The cloves are crunchy and juicy.  It will only be like this for a couple of weeks, until it begins to dry down, so it's a special time!

If you're going to a holiday party, we've got great hostess gifts.....HANDMADE SOAPS from Stone Cross Farm, or a jar of our own GARLIC POWDER!  Some GARLIC SCAPE PESTO or CHAMPAGNE DRESSING would be a different gift too!

We'll hope to see you Saturday behind the old courthouse on Short St, Sunday in front of Goodyear on Southland Drive.  Please send us an email if you have a special order!

Boone Creek Creamery {Website} {Facebook}

Our cheese is made from all natural JD Country Milk, a family owned Mennonite dairy farm in Logan County. The cows are pasture grazed and never given any antibiotics or hormones. Instead they are fed a vitamin enriched diet and all the grass they can eat. The milk is not homogenized and is pasteurized at just 145 degrees, then quickly cooled to preserve the natural flavor and enzymes that Mother Nature intended. We think the milk tastes better because the cows are happy.

You won't see hydraulic presses and fancy modern equipment around here. Instead, we make our cheeses by hand using traditional European techniques to protect the delicate curds. This is a lot more work and very time consuming, but we believe it creates better cheeses with rich complex flavors. We hope you agree.

This week we will have over a dozen different cheeses available. Stop by and sample our Butterkase (Amish Butter Cheese), Mama Mia, Sassy Redhead, Tuscan Sun, Abbey Road and of course our bourbon infused Kentucky Derby. Oh, and don't miss the Caerphilly, a tangy traditional Welsh coal miners cheese.

Thanks for your support. See you at the market.

" hand-crafted, Fair Trade, certified organic, and utterly delicious "

The Lexington Herald Leader

Possessing a palate from his years in the San Francisco wine trade, Mark Newberry understood the ancient art of blending different grapes to make a better wine. Various winegrapes complement and enhance each other to create a more complex wine, a more memorable and satisfying glass of wine. Coffee beans, he soon discovered, are similar agriculturally and culinarily, so blending coffee beans from different regions of the world produce a finer, more interesting, cup of coffee.

Blending, in the wine trade, is considered an art. You can enjoy some of the artfully produced coffees here at the Lexington Farmers Market.

        Southland Drive, Sunday, June 30th (10am-2pm)

Madison County Produce by Scott Evans

Madison County

This week I should finally have some tomatoes: Red, Yellow, and Pink...both Heirloom and Hybrids.  I'll have okra, lots of squash, cucumbers that are good for slicing, sweet banana peppers, hot banana peppers, bell peppers (green and purple & white), and eggplant.

Magic Beans {Website} {Facebook}

Fayette County

 Magic Beans Coffee Roasters will again be presenting two outstanding South American coffees this week: one from a small growers association in Colombia, the other from a single Brazilian estate. All of our coffees are available in bulk or in 12-ounce, oxygen-free valve-bags. We also offer brewed-to-order cups of coffee at our pour-over bar. Bring your favorite mug!

Colombia (Huila, Asociación Los Naranjos de San Agustín)This coffee comes from the Los Naranjos growers association, a group of about 50 farmers near the town of San Agustín, who have consistently produced some of the best Colombian coffees over the past decade. This rare, high-grown (1,500-1700 meters above sea level) coffee has a nice balance of origin and roast flavors: Medium, citrus-like acidity, aromas of orange, papaya, and molasses, and a rich, cocoa-like body. More information is available online at www.magicbeanscoffee.com/files/13-06-08_Bulletin.pdf.

Brazil (Monte Sião, Fazenda Santa Lúcia): Fazenda Santa Lúcia, located in the high-quality coffee region of Monte Sião, has about 500,000 trees of arabica coffee, grown with organic fertilizers and minimal other inputs, at an elevation of 1,000-1,200 meters above sea level. This coffee is prepared using a pulped natural process, in which the skin of the coffee cherry is removed, but the pulp is left on the beans to dry. This results in a coffee that is lower in acidity than a fully washed coffee, without the "wild" flavors often associated with the traditional natural dry process, in which the entire fruit is dried before further processing. Very mild, sweet, and balanced, buttery, toffee-nut aromas, with hints of orange peel and bourbon whiskey. More information is available online at www.magicbeanscoffee.com/files/13-04-06_Bulletin.pdf.

Peaches! Peaches! Peaches!

Our sweet juicy peaches are ripe for the pickin'.  Good every day, all day!  Even help soothe your afternoon hunger pangs with Mrs. Mary's tree-ripened peaches!  No need to reach for the vending machine change, instead sink your teeth into some peachy goodness.  And while you're at it, get enough for the entire office or even your grouchy sister's brother's mother's cousin's consin's dog Fido.  These peaches are so tasty they'll even put a smile on her face!

McMaine Farms

Madison County

We are proud to serve your produce needs this week!  We will have zucchini, yellow, zephyr, pattypan, and causa varieties of  squash.  We'll also have large and small cucumbers, and several varieties of eggplants.

Quarles Farm {Website} {Facebook}
Shelby County

We're still cutting hay at the farm and trying to get garden work done in between rain showers.  As is usually goes, we're never quite satisfied with the weather and would like to see a week of dry weather to get some hay up dry and some garden ground worked.

This week we are running a Fourth of July special on our ground beef.  Our Booming Beef Special, 5 pounds of ground beef for $20, is just in time to stock your freezers for your holiday celebrations or just to stock up for your favorite ground beef recipes.  We'll also have plenty of steaks, hamburger patties, brats and jumbo hot dogs available along with other cuts and a limited selection of some great lamb cuts.

Our cabbage is coming along nicely and we'll have beets, broccoli, green onions and other veggies on the tables this week.

The tables will be loaded with home made breads as well as salsas, relishes, jams, and chutneys all made with Quarles Farm produce and canned right in our kitchen just the way your mother and grandmother used to do.  Home made goodness canned at the peak of flavor.  Nothing better.

 Follow us on  Facebook or check out our website.

Stonehedge Farm {Facebook}

Woodford County

From our family farm to your family's table.  The fields are alive with activity.  This week we are excited to offer three kinds of beans (Roma, purple filet, yellow wax), three kinds of greens (collards, chard, and kale), and three kinds of herbs (basil, cilantro, and parsley).  We'll have 4 kinds of squash (zucchini, yellow, coosa, pattypan).  It's probably the last week for broccoli and cauliflower.  Just like last week, we will still have onions (candy and red), tamtilloes, peppers (yummy, banana, bell, and hot), cucmbers (pickling and slicing), and eggplant.  And our flowers...zinnias & sunflowers. New this week are okra, cherry tomatoes, green tomatoes, and spaghetti (and acorn) squash).   Fennel, kohl rabi, and turnips are all ending soon!

Three Toads Farm {Facebook}
Clark County

We're cutting our FIRST ZINNIAS of the season this week and will have them for the Market on Saturday, along with the first huge stems of POLLENLESS SUNFLOWERS. People often ask us why we go to the trouble and expense of growing only pollenless varieties of sunflowers and the answer's easy: without pollen the flowers last longer and they also don't make nearly the mess on your counter or tabletop. The stems are huge and we're cutting them long!

We'll also have long stems of HYDRANGEA, fragrant English SWEET PEA bouquets, luscious lavender SNAPDRAGON bouquets, but  unfortunately, it looks like we won't have very many ORIENTAL LILIES. Please be sure to come early so you won't be disappointed.

As always, if you have questions or would like to reserve flowers, just give us a call or contact us on Facebook.

Looks like Saturday's going to be a bit cooler and sunny -- a gorgeous day! We hope to see you then and thanks greatly for your awesome support!!

InYourCommunityIn Your Community

The Lexington Farmers' Market strives to make fresh, healthy, local food available to all that desire it by participating in local events and classes, supporting Fayette County Farm to School efforts, while maintaining robust markets at 4 locations around Lexington.

This spring, we launched ourselves into action as we began to implement our Food Desert Initiative funded by the USDA. This Initiative focuses on promoting local food awareness and access to affordable fresh products in neighborhoods where residents have a poverty rate of 20% or greater and live more than one mile from a supermarket or large grocery store.

Since the beginning of April, we've hosted taste tests with students at Booker T. Washington Academy (see photo), participated in nutrition and cooking classes, and passed out thousands of coupons for free produce around Lexington.

Continue to follow this section of the newsletter to hear about our continued outreach around Lexington and don't hesitate to contact us if you want to get involved.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so pleasepledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
