The Lexington Farmers' Market

May 8th, 2013

Loyal Readers and Market Patrons,

Things are really gearing up around here! Four of our markets are open and bustling and market staff have been keeping busy with events around the community. This week marks the start of the Lexington Farmers' Market Eat Like It's Spring campaign. We'll be traveling around the community promoting seasonal eating and educating about springtime farming. For regular updates and photos from our activities during and between markets, like our Facebook Page! We are less than 200 away from 10,000!

While you're online, please take time to vote for the 7th annual Readers' Choice Awards! Vote for the Lexington Farmers Market using this form. Winners will be announced in a special publication on July 28. We appreciate your support again this year!

This week, you can find us on Tuesday and Thursday at the corner of Broadway and Maxwell from 7am - 3pm

On Saturday, you'll find your favorite farmers set up with tables full of fresh, spring products at Cheapside Park from 7am-3pm. Additionally, Chef Foster and his Sullivan students will be joining us again for a cooking demo! Yum! Remember, parking is FREE on Saturdays in the Financial Center garage across Main Street or anywhere on the streets in a designated spot.

On Sunday, follow us to market on Southland Drive from 10am-2pm for another taste of spring.

Our Wednesday Market on the corner of University and Alumni will be coming soon with an opening date of May 22nd.

See you at market!

Recipe of the Week:

Spring Pea and Mint Soup

This week's recipe, from  Cherry On My Sundae, puts your leftover Derby Day mint to good use. Try it out and send us a picture of your creation!

Ingredients:
(makes 3 servings)
  •
    1/2 cup raw almonds
  • 10 ounces peas, steamed
  • 1 cup water
  • salt and pepper
  • 2 sprigs mint leaves, chopped

Directions:

  1. Soak the raw almonds in salted water at least 4 hours or overnight. Drain the almonds and put in a blender.
  2. Steam the peas until tender, about 4-5 minutes. Remove the peas from the steamer and add to the blender with the almonds along with the water and mint.
  3. Season with salt and pepper and puree the mixture until smooth. Add more water if you want a thinner consistency, add more almonds if you want it thicker.
  4. Garnish with fresh mint and serve immediately.

These products can be purchased from LFM market members:

  • Peas
  • Mint

Have you used market ingredients to create a tasty concoction? Share the recipe and the story with us and you may see it featured here!

HERE'S A BIT OF WHAT YOU'LL FIND AT THE MARKET THIS WEEK...

CAFFE MARCO   [ WEBSITE ]
Bourbon County

" hand-crafted, Fair Trade, certified organic, and utterly delicious "
- The Lexington Herald-Leader

Trieste, Italia, which claims a coffee roasting tradition going back to 1683 and the defeat of the Turks at the Battle of Vienna is the birthplace of CaffeMarco. The inspiration, the respect, and the exhilaration are all there - and they can be felt and recognized in the first cup of coffee.  The passion and the attention are evident. This is our tradition.

In downtown Paris Kentucky, roasting the finest arabica coffee beans in a ten pound coffee roaster and using the proven and traditional methods, Mark Newberry keeps the inspiration of Trieste alive and well.

Possessing a palate from his years in the San Francisco wine trade, he understood the art of blending different grapes to make a better wine. Various winegrapes complement each other to create a more complex wine, a more memorable and satisfying glass of wine. Coffee beans, he discovered, are similar agriculturally and culinarily, so blending coffee beans from different regions of the world produce a finer cup of coffee. Blending, in the wine trade, is considered an art. You can enjoy some of the artfully produced coffees here at the Lexington Farmers Market.

Black Bag  - mellow, soulful dark roast
Brown Bag - Caffe Journey
Gold Bag - Marco's Finest

Plus a Breakfast Blend. ( Blue Bag )
and, a water-processed Decaf ( Green Bag )

All coffees are roasted on Thursday for the Saturday Market.

I will be out of town in Saturday, May 11, and Wildflour + Elmwood Stock Farm will each have fresh roasted Caffemarco coffee beans for sale that day.

Thank you.

THREE TOADS FARM
Clark County

We have some awesome flowers for the Market this week! If you're shopping for Mother's Day, we bet these 100% home-grown beauties might just knock your mama's socks off:
  • Blooming pots of English sweet peas - These are heavy 14" painted clay pots with bamboo stakes supporting 5' of sweetly fragrant sweet pea vines in full bloom, underplanted with pastel shades of sweet alyssum. We sourced our sweet pea seed from a small commercial grower in England who is creating some of the most amazing cut flower varieties of heat tolerant sweet peas in the world. A truly unique gift for the lover of fine flowers.
  • Oriental lilies - This week we have two varieties of cut lilies (big long stems of white or soft pink) along with several varieties of plants, perfect for planting in your garden now where they'll bloom in a few weeks and for years to come. Either would make a wonderful gift on their own, and the combination of cut flowers with a few plants is almost beyond compare.
  • We'll also have big Spring flower bouquets
If you have questions or would like to make a special order or schedule a delivery, just call Charlie at859-771-2085 or check us out on Facebook (Three Toads Farm). Thanks very much and we hope to see you on Saturday!

COOKIN' UP KENTUCKY
Bourbon County

Off in the distance appears an object ever so familiar. What could it be? A bird, a plane....
No! It's a friend green tomato sandwich!

That's right, folks: Cookin' Up Kentucky is back at the market! Chef Jacob will be featuring his famous omelette, packed full of local greens, spring onions, and white cheddar cheese.  Be sure to stop by and get your morning started off right with a nutrient-packed, Kentucky Proud
breakfast! Cookin' Up Kentucky will also be at the Sunday market on Southland drive. We look forward to serving you!

MAGIC BEANS COFFEE ROASTERS
Fayette County

Magic Beans Coffee Roasters will offer two freshly roasted coffees this week.

Peru Cajamarca: This high-quality, Fair Trade certified, organic coffee comes from the Cenfrocafe cooperative in the mountains of northern Peru. Sweet and balanced, with floral and toffee notes, this balanced coffee pairs equally well with breakfast/brunch dishes and desserts. It also makes a terrific single-origin espresso.

Tanzania Kiboko Peaberry: These cute, little, round beans pack all of the signature flavors of a fine Kenyan coffee but are softer and a bit mellower. Aromas of cherry, almond, and blackberry jam yield to a grapefruit-like acidity, with a distinct dark chocolate finish. Kiboko means "hippopotamus" in Swahili, and we can't help but think of these little guys as baby hippopotamuses. This coffee is bright and tangy, and it does best with a mellow steep in a French press. It's also delightfully refreshing as an iced coffee. No sugar needed!

Both coffees are available in whole-bean form, by the bag or in bulk. Or Keith and Schuyler can brew you a cup to enjoy while you shop the market. Bring your favorite mug! Magic Beans roasts coffee for the weekend markets every Friday night at its roasting studio in the Bread Box using a Sivetz clean-air roasting process.

QUARLES DAYLILLIES AND FARM
 [ WEBSITE | FACEBOOK ]
Shelby County
Our grill is up and running at both the Saturday and the Sunday markets so you can start the morning with a good breakfast of local eggs, an omelet which can contain our own beef sausage and your choice of other items and bacon.  There's also biscuits with your choice fillings.   We're also grilling hamburgers, bratwurst and jumbo hot dogs, all made with our beef!  When you get to market, smell the air. You should be able to follow the good smells to our tents!

We'll also have plenty of beef and lamb in our coolers. It's about time to start grilling and we have some impressive filet mignon, ribeye and other fine cuts to go on the fire. If you're looking for an economical steak, try our top sirloin. There are a lot of people in Lexington that are finding out that this cut is a fabulous piece of steak and a very good price.

We'll have plenty of breads and cakes on the table as well as a very wide selection of jams and jellies. Salsas and relishes round out the choices. There's something for everyone at the market so come on down, have a cup of coffee, sweet tea or hot chocolate and take a look around. You'll have a great time!

Everyone is welcoming the late spring this year.  We appreciate seeing so
many familiar faces returning to the markets on Saturday and Sunday
outdoors.  We will continue to attend each week, rain or sun or something
in between - hope to see you as well!

We've had great feedback on our jarred Salsa, Ketchup, and Marinara Sauce,
all professionally packed in BPA-free glass.  We'll continue to offer
these items each week until sold out - and we'll be planting enough for a
bumper crop of organic tomatoes this summer to restock the pantry.

NEW, NEW  We have found a professional charcutier to make delicious
sausages and bratwursts for us from Elmwood organic beef.  It has been
several years since we had our all-beef sausages to offer, and we are
really excited about these tasty and high quality offerings.

EGGS We offer each market our certified organic eggs from free-ranging
hens who live outdoors on grass pasture.  Both whole dozen and half-dozens
available. Our hens are always outside, enjoying the green growing grass &
clover and rewarding us with beautiful big brown eggs packed full of
flavor, orangey color, and healthful omega-3-fatty acids.

MEAT and POULTRY  We have restocked our inventory of grass-fed Angus
organic beef, along with our certified organic whole chickens, cut-up
chicken pieces, and flavorful hearty stewing hens.  In addition, we have
chicken liver and ground turkey.  Feel free to order ahead for quantity
amounts or a particular cut for that special meal, and we'll have it ready
for pickup at any of the farmers markets.  View our website for special
Beef & Chicken Bundles, and other quantities packages.

These days, more than ever, it's important to know the source of your
family's food and you can look to our local organic farm to meet your
body's nutritional needs resulting in good health.  Visit our website to
learn more, review our price lists, pre-order your special items, or
contact Elmwood for more information.

ABIGAIL'S
Fayette County

I am taking this year off to write more mystery novels, so I will not be with you this season.  However, Leo and Jean Keene from Blue Moon Farm have agreed to sell my honey which had won many awards from the Kentucky State Fair.   I have won sixteen honey awards through the years.  Right now my bees are working very hard bringing in this year's honey harvest.

In March, the USDA released a report stating that the USA has lost 50% of all its European honey bees.  Please remember to plant clover in your suburban yard and let the dandelions bloom.  Plant non-hybrid flowers.  The bees need the nectar from these plants.  A grass yard benefits nothing unless you have a cow.  And support local beekeepers by paying a fair price for their honey.

Don't forget that my honey is at Blue Moon Farm!!!!!   If you need to get ahold of me - www.abigailkeam.com  or abigailshoney@windstream.net

If any of you came by the Sunday market last week looking for us, we apologize for not being there!  It seemed like a lose/lose situation, given the awful rain, the cold and 2 hours of driving (a fuel guzzling truck) to get there and back.   The way the rain came down on the farm, we felt as if we should have been starting on the ark!  We're hoping for a MUCH better Sunday this week!

On our way home from market Saturday night we saw a red fox running through a pasture on Poosey Ridge, and while we watched, a second one ran into view!   We have seen them on the farm, but not often!  They are so great to watch.......like a mixture of a dog and a cat!

Our LETTUCES are coming on fast at this point, and we will have a beautiful BABY LETTUCE MIX for market this weekend....you may even find a few pea shoots in it!  Speaking of salads.....we've posted a photo on our Facebook page of a salad we made last weekend including some gorgeous edible flowers from Bleugrass Chevre.  Take a look!

There will be yummy SPINACH again this week too......great in salads, sautéed, in an omelet, or in place of lettuce on a sandwich!  KALE too!

Is your kitchen garden ready for herb plants?  We have all kinds from PARSLEY and THYME to the impossible-to-find BAY LAUREL!  Trying to cut down on your sugar intake?  We have Stevia plants to sweeten your foods.  Google it!  It's amazingly sweet, and calorie free.  We have a couple of pots of mixed herbs for an instant HERB GARDEN for your Mom.

We'll have Vibrant Greens' hydroponically grown ROMAINE LETTUCE and BASIL, WATERCRESS by special order email (Friday noon deadline).

ASPARAGUS went like wild fire last Saturday!  Now that it's finally started, we should have a good supply until the season is over.  Do you know the trick about peeling the bottom ends of the spears?  Waste not, want not!  Just use your vegetable peeler and take off a swipe or two all the way around the fat end of the spear, and it becomes tender and edible all the way down!  No more snapping them off and throwing them away!

And what to have your asparagus accompany?  How about meatloaf?  We have GROUND BEEF from Colcord Farm, GROUND PORK from Stone Cross Farm, and GROUND LAMB from Bluegrass Lamb & Goat.  Stella's KY Deli serves a terrific burger made with the beef and lamb mixed together!  Chop some BABY GREEN GARLIC into it instead of onion!  It will be delicious!

The BACON and BREAKFAST SAUSAGE we have from Stone Cross Farm will help make your Mothers' Day breakfast or brunch fantastic!   These are the same products served at Windy Corner Restaurant and Alfalfa's, and if you're passing through Irvine, you'll find them at that town's newest restaurant, Hillbilly Chef Diner!  We have big thick BONELESS PORK CHOPS, and some thinner ones too!  BONE-IN CHOPS, TENDERLOIN, SHOULDER and LOIN ROASTS, and many SAUSAGES!  ARTISAN BREADS from Sunrise Bakery to go with your dinner, and wonderful sweets like CINNAMON ROLLS and MUFFINS for brunch!!

STEAKS for Mothers' Day from Colcord Farm are 30% off, and we won't tell your Mom!

If you  need a nice little gift to put by Mom's place at the table, how about some Blue Moon FarmSUNDAY TEA, or HANDMADE SOAPS from Stone Cross Farm?  Also a nice remembrance for someone who is not your mother, but feels like it sometimes!!  Abigail's HONEY also makes a nice gift!

Come on by and have a look around.  We're pretty sure you'll find something you like!

See you this weekend!

Special orders by noon Friday by email.

Remember to visit our website at
for more information about the market.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
