The Lexington Farmers' Market

April 24th, 2013

Loyal Readers and Market Patrons,
April showers bring May flowers. That's the mantra I've been repeating in my head this morning. While these hour-long showers might seem like an insult to spring, are careful eye will notice how much the greenery pops on a day like today. The tender spring plants are loving the rain and will take off once the sun appears producing a bounty of flowers and fruit for us all to enjoy!
Share in the bounty of spring rain with us this weekend:
On Saturday, you'll find your favorite farmers set up with tables full of fresh, spring products at Cheapside Park from 7am-3pm. Remember, parking is FREE on Saturdays in the Financial Center garage across Main Street or anywhere on the streets in a designated spot. On Sunday, follow us to market on Southland Drive from 10am-2pm for another taste of spring.
Our weekday markets will be soon to follow with opening dates as follows:
Tuesday/Thursday Market (Broadway & Maxwell): May 2nd
Wednesday Market (University & Alumni): May 22nd
See you at market!

Recipe of the Week:
Spring Pizza
This week's recipe, from Eating Well, is an easy pizza recipe that captures the best flavors of spring. Try it out and let us know what you think! Ingredients: (serves 5) - 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 bunch asparagus (about 1 pound)
- 1/2 cup snipped fresh chives (from 1 bunch), divided
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
- 1 pound whole-wheat pizza dough
- 1 cup shredded fontina or mozzarella cheese
Directions: - Position rack in lower third of oven, place a pizza stone or large pizza pan on the rack and preheat oven to 450°F for at least 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, combine 2 tablespoons oil and garlic in a small bowl; set aside. Trim asparagus spears to about 6 inches long; slice any thicker stalks in half lengthwise. Toss in a bowl with the remaining 1 tablespoon oil, 1/4 cup chives, salt and pepper.
- Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to about a 14-inch circle.
- Carefully remove the pizza stone or pan from the oven and set on a heatproof surface, such as your stovetop. Place the dough on the stone or pan and brush with the reserved garlic-oil mixture. Arrange the asparagus in a circular pattern on the dough with the tips facing out. Top with cheese and the remaining chives.
- Carefully return the stone or pan to the oven and bake the pizza on the lower rack until crispy and golden and the cheese is melted, about 15 minutes.
These products can be purchased from LFM market members: - Cheese
- Chives
- Asparagus
- Olive Oil
- Garlic

We're now going into our third week of outside markets and are hoping for some warmer weather. Our grill is up and running at both the Saturday and the Sunday markets so you can start the morning with a good breakfast of local eggs, an omelet which can contain our own beef sausage and your choice of other items and bacon. We're also grilling hamburgers, bratwurst and jumbo hot dogs, all made with our beef! When you get to market, smell the air. You should be able to follow the good smells to our tents!
We'll also have plenty of beef and lamb in our coolers. It's about time to start grilling and we have some impressive filet mignon, ribeye and other fine cuts to go on the fire. If you're looking for an economical steak, try our top sirloin. There are a lot of people in Lexington that are finding out that this cut is a fabulous piece of steak and a very good price.
We'll have plenty of breads and cakes on the table as well as a very wide selection of jams and jellies. Salsas and relishes round out the choices. There's something for everyone at the market so come on down, have a cup of coffee, sweet tea or hot chocolate and take a look around. You'll have a great time!

Everyone is welcoming the late spring this year. We appreciate seeing so many familiar faces returning to the markets on Saturday and Sunday outdoors. We will continue to attend each week, rain or sun or something in between - hope to see you as well! We've had great feedback on our jarred Salsa, Ketchup, and Marinara Sauce, all professionally packed in BPA-free glass. We'll continue to offer these items each week until sold out - and we'll be planting enough for a bumper crop of organic tomatoes this summer to restock the pantry. NEW, NEW We have found a professional charcutier to make delicious sausages and bratwursts for us from Elmwood organic beef. It has been several years since we had our all-beef sausages to offer, and we are really excited about these tasty and high quality offerings. EGGS We offer each market our certified organic eggs from free-ranging hens who live outdoors on grass pasture. Both whole dozen and half-dozens available. Our hens are always outside, enjoying the green growing grass & clover and rewarding us with beautiful big brown eggs packed full of flavor, orangey color, and healthful omega-3-fatty acids. MEAT and POULTRY We have restocked our inventory of grass-fed Angus organic beef, along with our certified organic whole chickens, cut-up chicken pieces, and flavorful hearty stewing hens. In addition, we have chicken liver and ground turkey. Feel free to order ahead for quantity amounts or a particular cut for that special meal, and we'll have it ready for pickup at any of the farmers markets. View our website for special Beef & Chicken Bundles, and other quantities packages. These days, more than ever, it's important to know the source of your family's food and you can look to our local organic farm to meet your body's nutritional needs resulting in good health. Visit our website to learn more, review our price lists, pre-order your special items, or contact Elmwood for more information. ABIGAIL'S
Fayette County
I am taking this year off to write more mystery novels, so I will not be with you this season. However, Leo and Jean Keene from Blue Moon Farm have agreed to sell my honey which had won many awards from the Kentucky State Fair. I have won sixteen honey awards through the years. Right now my bees are working very hard bringing in this year's honey harvest.
In March, the USDA released a report stating that the USA has lost 50% of all its European honey bees. Please remember to plant clover in your suburban yard and let the dandelions bloom. Plant non-hybrid flowers. The bees need the nectar from these plants. A grass yard benefits nothing unless you have a cow. And support local beekeepers by paying a fair price for their honey.
Check out our CSA LFM DELIVERY - EARLY SIGNUP DISCOUNTS - PAYMENT OPTIONS 2013 begins our transition to Certified Organic produce NEW - Smoked Turkey Breast - Turkey Breakfast Sausage - Ground Turkey No Sodium Nitrate & Raised on Pasture at Lazy Eight Stock Farm EGGS - the hens have really turned on, we've got plenty from our hens Raised on Pasture CHICKEN - we've got a selection of cuts and whole birds, always raised on pasture. Find us on Facebook and read our current Newsletter.
The skies over Blue Moon Farm are often dotted with turkey buzzards, circling on the updrafts from the KY River. Through the years, all of our Rottweilers have made it their job to "chase them" which entails running like crazy dogs and jumping up and barking. A few years ago a little stray dog turned up in our barn and is now a member of the family. He is small, probably a beagle/Jack Russell mix. His name is Mouse. We call him our "Nottweiler". In his first months here Mouse would look at Moonshadow (Rottweiler) like she'd lost her mind when she would chase the buzzards, but eventually she taught him that this is what we DO here! J Last Saturday when we walked the dogs out our road after market, we got up next to our neighbor's old barn with half its roof gone. Apparently a buzzard had gone down inside through the roof and as we passed by it came out through the barn door right in front of Mouse!! He'd never seen one that close up, and he really thought he was going to finally succeed in catching one! He took off out the road after it like a mad dog while it was gaining altitude. When we got our laughing under control we finally called him back. He was a proud boy!!
Here we are at week three already, and the ASPARAGUS still isn't popping! I'm getting a little impatient! We just can't seem to get enough warm days in a row. Our SPINACH was very well received last week, and very much enjoyed at home, I might add! I could eat it three meals a day! We've had it as a side dish, in pasta, in omelets, on sandwiches, you name it! Look out Popeye! We're watching our tiny LETTUCES every day, hoping they will be ready to cut for market, but so far no luck. In the meantime, we have the wonderful, beautiful GREENS from Vibrant Greens our neighbor in Madison County. This week we'll have ARUGULA, BASIL and LETTUCE.....all grown hydroponically using no pesticides. This results in nice clean plants with no hidden grit! Also, WATERCRESS by special order. Just send us an emails before Friday 2PM deadline.
It's time to be making special orders for your Derby parties.....how about a whole PORK RACK or a beautiful RACK OF LAMB? All local and Kentucky Proud! Need sweets for your Derby brunch? We can special order any amount of CINNAMON ROLLS, CROISSANTS, PAIN au CHOCOLAT, or MUFFINS for you to pick up early Saturday morning......or how about GARIC BAGELS?
We've got some of Abigail's HONEY, and she'll be bringing more to us this weekend. It's the perfect addition to our Blue Moon Farm SUNDAY TEA! An Earl Grey base (either black or green tea) with our ROSEMARY and LAVENDER. Fragrant and soothing for a lazy Sunday morning.
All our regular garlic products including fresh BABY GREEN GARLIC (ask for a recipe sheet!) and GARLIC SCAPE PESTO. (If you're attending the Good Foods CoOp annual membership meeting Sunday you'll find the Garlic Scape Pesto on your potatoes!)
PORK (Bacon, Sausages, Chops, Roasts) and Artisan CHEESES from Stone Cross Farm , GRASS FINISHED BEEF (Steaks 30% off, Burger, Roasts)from Colcord Farm, KENTUCKY LAMB (Ground, Stew Meat, Racks, Spare Ribs). ARTISAN BREADS and PASTRIES from Sunrise Bakery.
HERB SETS for your garden and lots of yummy GARLIC goodness from us!!

See you this weekend.....rain or shine!

WUKY
WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
