The Lexington Farmers' Market
|
January 16th, 2013
|
Greetings!
For those of you who don't know me, my name is Stephanie Hopkins and I have been an Assistant Manager with the Lexington Farmers' Market since May of last year. I graduated from UK in 2010 and have recently completed a dual Masters program in Environmental Science and Public Administration at IU. I am excited to be back in the Bluegrass state doing what I love: helping you connect with your local farmers and their delicious local produce!
With almost a full market season under my belt, I am excited to be expanding my responsibilities to include things like writing this weekly newsletter. Whitney left some big shoes to fill, but I'm up for the challenge.
If I haven't met you already, please feel free to introduce yourself to me at the next market you attend. I love meeting all of our amazing customers!
As always, don't forget:
Our Indoor market, located in the Victorian Square Atrium, is NOW OPEN from 8am-1pm every Saturday.
Parking is FREE on Saturdays on the streets. We will also validate parking for the Victorian Square parking garage located at 350 W Short Street. This week, there is a 4pm UK home game, so parking will start charging two hours before tip off. Come early, beat the crowd, and as always, we will try to accommodate you to the best of our abilities.
See you at market!
Stephanie Hopkins
Lexington Farmers' Market Assistant Manager
P.S. Be sure to check out Good Foods Co-Op's events this month. Details can be found in the sponsor's section at the bottom of this newsletter.

Recipe of the Week:
French Onion Soup Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
This weeks recipe, from the Tasty Kitchen blog, has my stomach growling on this cold, winter day. Try it and let me know what you think!
Ingredients:
-
3 Tablespoons Butter, Plus More For Buttering Bread
- 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
- 2 whole Medium Yellow Onions, Sliced 1/4 Of An Inch Thick
- 1 teaspoon Kosher Salt
- ˝ teaspoons Black Pepper
- 1 teaspoon Sugar
- 1 teaspoon Fresh Thyme Leaves
- 3 Tablespoons Beer (Beef Stock Or White Wine Can Be Substituted)
- 4 slices Sourdough Bread
- ˝ cups Grated Apple Smoked Gruyere Cheese (or More If Desired)
Directions:
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and olive oil together. Add in the onions and stir so they are coated in all the fat. Cook undisturbed for 5 minutes.
- Stir and add in the salt, pepper, sugar and thyme. Stir, cover the pan with a lid and let cook. Stir occasionally until the onions are soft and deep golden in color. Reduce the heat if you notice the onions are browning too soon.
- Add in the beer, scrape any bits that accumulated on the bottom of the skillet, and then remove them off the heat.
- On a preheated griddle or large skillet, place a slice of buttered bread (butter-side down) and top it with a little shredded smoked Gruyere. Add half of the onion mixture and then more of the cheese. Top with a second slice of buttered bread (butter-side up).
- Flip when the bottom is crispy and golden; repeat on second side.
- Cut in half and serve.
These products can be purchased from LFM vendors:
- Olive Oil
- Onions
- Sourdough Bread
- Cheese

HERE'S A BIT OF WHAT YOU'LL FIND AT THE MARKET THIS WEEK...
Shelby County
As I'm typing this we're having the coldest weather in the last two winters. The hoses at the barn are frozen because someone forgot to drain them and my cold water is frozen in the house because I forgot to set it on drip. First calf heifers are loafing in the barn waiting for their first born and we're watching the sheep closely for new arrivals. Things should get interesting around here pretty soon!
We'll be at the market this weekend with the last of the kale and mustard greens until spring. We'll also have turnips, several varieties of winter squash, potatoes, dried herbs and apples. There's plenty of beef and lamb available in our coolers and colorful canned goods in the form of salsas, relishes, pickles, pickled beets, chutneys, jams and jellies. Our breads and cakes are great for breakfast, snack or anytime.
Visit our website or visit our Facebook page. We try to post a few pictures of the farm and keep folks up with whats going on "down on the farm."

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE
The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.
We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.
We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.
If you want a better quality of life for all of us, please join The Fayette Alliance today for free. Visit www.fayettealliance.com for more information.
WUKY
WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
