NCI trainings bring cutting-edge content to KHP contractors

All KY Home Performance (KHP) HVAC contractors have received several reminders about a series of trainings from the National Comfort Insitute (NCI), taking place in Louisville and Lexington this week. NCI is a highly-respected firm that conducts trainings and implements residential energy-efficiency programs around the country. Their "System Performance" two-day introductory course is sought out by hundreds of contractors nationwide, who routinely travel great distances to gain insight into the next frontier in HVAC contracting:  the ability to quickly diagnose system weaknesses, and then prescribe big-picture solutions that truly deliver the high efficiency that customers demand.

The trainings will be led by David Richardson, a nationally-recognized trainer based in Lawrenceburg. Visit
David's Blog for helpful tips and useful information. He has served as an invaluable technical resource for KHP from its earliest days, and is ecstatic to see the current level of interest from Kentucky HVAC contractors in this proven way of delivering top-notch systems to HVAC customers. "We know that the market is there," David said recently, "since we're seeing it succeed all over the country." These trainings resulted when KHP helped David and his Cleveland-based NCI team tap into a pool of industry-leading HVAC pros who are already dedicated to performing at the highest possible levels.

The NCI trainings are not required by KHP, but the team took part in this week's Louisville training to better understand this critical aspect of delivering real home performance solutions to Kentucky homeowners. The training addresses what one attendee called "The Big Lie" - that high-efficiency HVAC equipment actually delivers the level of performance that its factory ratings indicate. NCI has conducted extensive research proving that an average system actually operates at only 57 percent of its rated efficiency, due mostly to the poor design and installation of the duct systems. The System Performance training is an introduction to a larger approach that trains HVAC contractors to determine the exact limitations of the duct system (and the building envelope), and then to prescribe and install precise upgrades to enable a high-end unit to work optimally within a high-performing system, thereby raising that 57 percent to 90 percent or higher.

The attendees in the Louisville class, including technicians, sales personnel, and management, were universally enthusiastic about what this approach can mean to their companies and to their customers. "We've got some real changes to make" said one KHP contractor while thinking over the lessons learned during the two-day deluge of information, "but it's going to lead to a much better product in the end." NCI is hoping that this is only the first chapter in a solid relationship with Kentucky-based HVAC professionals, and KHP will be there with them every step of the way.
