Applying to Schools FAQ
Who should apply during the current application period?
- Students who will enter kindergarten at the start of the next school year
- Older students who have moved to a new address during the current school year
- Any student who wants to apply to a magnet school, a magnet program, or an optional program -- as well as students who will be high school freshmen next year and want to apply to a school outside their network through Open Enrollment. See the Choices guides above for information on schools and programs throughout the district.
Do kindergarten students have to apply to a school for first grade?
- No. If your child is in kindergarten and you want him or her to go to the same school for first grade, you don't have to do anything.
Do fifth graders have to apply to a middle school? Do eighth graders have to apply to a high school?
- No. Students who are currently enrolled in the fifth or eighth grade at a JCPS school do not have to do anything if they are not interested in magnet schools, magnet programs, optional programs, or High School Open Enrollment. They will automatically be enrolled in the middle or high school that serves their home address.
How can I find out which school serves my address?- Call the JCPS Demographics Office at 485-3050, or use the online SchoolFinder.
If my child goes to a traditional elementary (or middle) school, does he or she need to apply to a traditional middle (or high) school?- Not if your child's school is a feeder school to the next level. More information on traditional education is available in the Choices guides above.
Can my child apply to magnet schools, magnet programs, and optional programs if he or she has never attended a JCPS school before?
When will the application period end?
When will I know if my child's application has been accepted?- Parents will be notified before the end of the current school year.
How do parents submit applications if they don't have Internet access?
- Computers are available at the JCPS Registration Site, which is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lam Building (4309 Bishop Lane). There also is a Mobile Application Bus -- a school bus retrofitted to accept applications.
How can I get more information on the application process?
- Call the JCPS Parent Assistance Center at 485-6250.
Is help available for parents who don't speak English?
- Yes. Call the JCPS English as a Second Language (ESL) Office at 485-3623.

Read the Nutrition & Physical Activity Report
Staff members from the JCPS School and Community Nutrition Services Department often attend school and community events, including health fairs, walk-a-thons, and Fit Lit family events.
In fact, during the last school year, the department's staff shared information on school meals and healthy eating with about 16,000 people at these types of events.
The staff members also host Farm-to-School events, which include a mobile barnyard with farm animals, a mobile dairy classroom, gardening activities, and cooking lessons. These events teach students about the importance of good nutrition, the origin of foods, and how to prepare healthy meals and snacks.

Four JCPS schools receive instruments worth $17,600
Louisville Public Media (LPM), with generous support from the Robert and Clarita Whitney Fund and PNC Wealth Management, donated 44 band and orchestra instruments to four Jefferson County public schools last month.
- Jacob Elementary received 30 violins.
- The Phoenix School of Discovery received four clarinets and a trumpet.
- Western High received three trumpets, three clarinets, and a tuba.
- Doss High received a bass clarinet and a euphonium.
Established in 2003, the LPM Instrumental Partners Program has placed more than 600 instruments in the hands of students. The program collects gently used band and orchestra instruments and has them refurbished. The instruments are then donated to students in need.
Studies continue to show that music listening, performance, and lessons improve language, communication, and problem-solving skills, which are benefits that LPM wants all students in the community to experience. Call 814-6500 for information on supporting the Instrumental Partners Program.
