Color my world...
Colors are meaningful.

Colors convey and elicit strong thoughts and feelings.

Colors can be moody: bright or dark; warm or cool; quiet or loud; happy or sad. Or neutral. Oh, that cagey taupe.

Red is a stimulant. It quickens the pulse. It encourages action. Unless it's on a signal light. Yellow is optimistic. It's happy. It's enlightened. You'll recall that the ubiquitous Happy Face of the 70s wasn't flesh colored; it was yellow. Van Gogh used yellow to give witness to his spiritual awakening. Blue, the color of ocean and sky, is familiar. It's security. It's peace. Chromatically then, if not psychologically, if you've got the blues, you're in pretty good shape. And these are just the primary colors--the trinity of color that breathes life into every hue with something to say.

It's no surprise to see the accomplished painter's chaotic wooden pallet. It reflects years of trying to mix just the right color to express her vision. What would happen if the artist restricted her use of color? If she eliminated from her palette any colors she found personally distasteful?

Likewise, what would it be like if we managed to restrict our life experience to only those events that we find resonant?

Most of us, for example, will do whatever we can to avoid pain.

We deny it.

We turn the noise up.

We outrun it.

We anesthetize it.

We find it, well, unpalatable.

But pain is unavoidable.

And if we constrict our emotional range to avoid feeling pain, we constrict our capacity to feel.

Anything.

And that would indeed be a life without the full spectrum and expression of color.

What would it look like, short of becoming a masochist, to change your relationship with pain--interior and exterior pain? How might you change your perspective around pain so that it becomes one more essential color on the canvas that is your life?

Jesus encouraged his disciples, "Make friends of your enemies." How might changing your relationship with pain make a friend of an enemy?
