Humphrey Bogart remains one of my favorite actors of the twentieth century.
He played a broad range of characters including a cynical detective trying to stay ahead of the authorities; a cynical fugitive trying to stay ahead of the authorities; and a cynical mercenary trying to stay ahead of the authorities.
"Bogie" was known for hard-boiled dialog such as this breathless exchange with Lauren Bacall in To Have and To Have Not:
Bacall: "I don't like your manners."
Bogart: "I'm not crazy about yours. I didn't ask to see you. I don't mind if you don't like my manners. I don't like them myself. They're pretty bad. I grieve over them long winter evenings."
Bogart's characters nearly always manifested an endearing redemptive quality such as a regret of wasted years; a compassion for the oppressed; and a sacrifice for a noble cause. Still, Bogart never ceded himself to anyone.
Bogart died in 1957, but lives on in film, his iconic portraiture, and in our vocabulary. The latter in a verb, "to bogart," meaning "to bully" or "to monopolize."
Which makes me curious. If your name became a verb, how, might you imagine, would it be defined?
How would you like it to be defined?
What's keeping you from living into that definition?
