Big "A," little "a," agendas...
Think of a little "a" agenda as a to-do list.

We have an agenda for what we are going to do.

We have an agenda for our meeting; an agenda for our day; an agenda for our trip to the mall.

These are examples of little a agendas.

Little a agendas can feel big; little a agendas can include tasks as small as your grocery list and as big as your goals and purpose.

In contrast...

Think of a big "A" Agenda as a to-be list.

We have an agenda for who we are.

We have an agenda, an intention, for who we are becoming; an agenda, a bodacious vision, for our organization; an agenda, a system of beliefs, that defines our philosophical or political perspective.

These are examples of big A agendas.

Big A agendas can feel big; they are big.

Truth be told, little a agendas can be problematic.

Sometimes our little a agendas can have an exaggerated sense of their own impact. They demand our attention, convinced they are both urgent and important. Don't be fooled. The big A agenda is the brain of the outfit; the little a agenda is just the hired muscle.

Sometimes our little a agendas are not aligned with our big A agendas. This misalignment can rob us of peace--in relationship both with ourselves and with others; this misalignment may bring satisfaction in the short term, but disappointment in the long term; and this misalignment can invite others to reasonably question our integrity.

Sometimes we grip our little a agendas too tightly. This tight grip can make us lose sight of the larger quest, and we become mired in inconsequential battles of wills; this tight grip can cause us to quickly lose patience with friend and foe, acquaintance and stranger--anyone who even unwittingly interferes with our little a agendas; and, this tight grip, can make us lose perspective, as our little a agendas begin to feel like big A agendas that must not, at any cost, be compromised or sacrificed.

Sometimes, we don't even have a big A agenda. But, then, if you don't have a big A agenda, you probably wouldn't be wasting your time reading my stuff.

What's the relationship between your little a agenda and your big A agenda?

Which is the dominant force in your life: your little a agenda or your big A agenda?

What do you know to be true of you when another hinders your little a agenda?
