Jesus healed the sick in a myriad of ways: with a word, with a touch; while near, while afar; upon his direction, upon their submission.
But he always healed the leper with a touch.
Leprosy was then, and remains now, a dreadful, contagious disease. It destroys the nervous system, degenerates the skin, and deforms the body. But the impact of leprosy in Jesus' day was more than skin deep. Lepers were shunned from the community and forced to live in isolation outside the city gates. They were directed to warn those in their path by shouting, "Unclean, unclean." No one touched a leper.
Except Jesus.
Can you imagine life without being touched? Not a handshake. Not a grasp of the shoulder, Not a hug. Ever. Human touch creates community; fosters security; reduces anxiety; and satisfies sensory longings. Can you imagine how you would feel--if you were a leper--when you felt someone's touch, Jesus' touch in fact, for the first time?
When Jesus touched a leper, his healing touch reached beyond skin deep.
It was restorative.
It reconciled relationships.
It was an occasion to rejoice.
Ooh...righteousness, peace, joy.
The very essence of the kingdom of heaven (Romans 14:17).
Who would you have to become, what might you do, to bring the kingdom of heaven to your world? Righteousness, peace joy. Restore, reconcile, rejoice.
