Earth, wind, and tires...
|
Look, I understand physics.
Well, I don't actually understand physics.
I do, however, faithfully obey its laws.
Driving through the woods this morning from Farmerville to Monroe, the air is warm and heavy and still. The leaves of the bushes low to the ground are motionless. The limbs of the trees high to the sky are quiet.
And yet I understand that things are not as they seem.
Even now, the earth is spinning on its axis just over 1,000 miles per hour at the Equator. At the same time, it's orbiting the sun at roughly 67,000 miles per hour.
It's a wonder I can keep my car on the road.
Particularly when I remember that my car is actually, strictly speaking, traveling on its side.
I suddenly realize the gravity of my situation.
But to my surprise my hands release their grip on the steering wheel, my foot eases up on the pedal, and the tension in my body relaxes.
In that moment I realize that my ability to manipulate and control--relationships, activities, circumstances, environments--is something of an illusion. And, I'm reminded of the one who has the power over the spinning and the orbiting and everything else:
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power... (Hebrews 1:1-3).

How does it show up in your own or others' bodies and dispositions?
Does the outcome merit the outlay?
What's the lie you might be telling yourself around the need to manipulate and control?
