The death of a dream...
The end of a relationship, the loss of a job or business, the surrender of a hope--among other partings--can be every bit as difficult to endure as the death of a beloved. In truth, the inevitability, the finality, the universality, of death can make it (as remarkable as this may sound) easier to bear than other partings.

But beyond the obvious breach common to all separations, there is often an underlying, more intangible and generally undefined, sense of loss: the death of a dream; a premature end to a cherished, personal narrative.

The man who has wept over a new-made grave; the woman who has learned she cannot bear children; the entrepreneur who has run out of reserves; the young teen who has experienced unrequited love; the one who has felt a sense of betrayal; the ball player invited to Spring Training who will not make the Opening Day roster.

The death of the dream can be as devastating as the loss itself.

If, however, the one grieving can "pull apart" mourning the loss from the death of the dream, his pain can be shortened. Dreams can be reimagined. Personal narratives can be rewritten.

Have you experienced a loss, either in the distant past or in recent days, that cannot be consoled? Mightn't it be possible that the protracted sorrow is more about the death of a dream than the loss itself? What would it take to "pull apart" the loss from the death of the dream?

How might we lessen the impact of the inevitable losses of life by proactively crafting a personal narrative that is transcendent, a dream or vision that is less vulnerable to the contrary winds that blow?
