"In the beginning"
"...then and now...
If you've read the Gospel of John, you've likely noticed that its preamble (John 1:1-18) predates the manger. Jesus himself, of course, predates the manger. The prophet Micah testified some four centuries before the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, "But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity" (Micah 5:2).

Jesus would "go forth" from the manger in Bethlehem; but his "goings forth" are from "the days of eternity."

And, if you've read the gospel of John and if you've noticed its preamble, you've likely observed an uncanny parallel between the "In the beginnings" of Genesis and John's Gospel. Moses recalled, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1); John testified, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made..." (John 1:1-3). When John picked up his stylus to compose his gospel, Moses' "tune" was playing in his mind.

How embarrassing.

Unless, of course, the parallels were deliberate.

And, indeed, it appears that John intentionally called upon the language of Moses to compare and contrast "old creation" in Adam and "new creation" in Christ. Of old creation, God spoke the worlds into existence (Psalm 33:6-9); of new creation, "if anyone is in Christ [the Word, "the expression of God," made flesh], the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" (2 Corinthians 5:17). Of old creation, man was formed in the image of God; of new creation, God was formed in the image of man (Philippians 2:5-11). Of old creation, the light pierced the darkness; of new creation, in Jesus "was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it" (John 1:4-5).

Isn't God just wonder-full?

Is your life best reflective of old creation or new creation? How so?
