I'd like to apologize to all the people I've disappointed over the years, and in particular to those I disappointed--frankly through no fault of my own--during an odd stretch some twenty-five years ago...
To the preteen girls who incessantly called my Burbank, California apartment throughout the night, throughout the week, over the course of a month or more, and who sincerely and achingly professed their love for me--much to my confusion and concern (read "fear"). "Do you know me?" "Yes." "How?" "I saw you getting out of your car at work today." To these same preteen girls I apologize for my insensitivity when, for the sake of sleep and other constraining concerns, I changed my phone number to a new, unlisted number. (Cost me $35.00, by the way.)
I apologize.
To the young female tour guides at Universal Studios in Los Angeles who heard my name paged, inviting my party to pick up our VIP Tour Tickets; and, who rushed to greet my guests and me at the box office. Among them, I'm particularly sorry for those young girls who were actually crouched behind the counter of the box office, who by their crestfallen faces were obviously expecting someone else by the same name when they popped out of their hiding places.
I apologize.
To the box office staff of the Schubert Theater in Los Angeles who--when I introduced myself to pick up front row center tickets on hold for a Broadway stage play--were visibly disappointed when they saw me. "Too tall," they must have concluded. Their groans of disappointment were audible.
I apologize.
In my defense, first, I was already two years old when Michael J. Fox was born in "Canada" and given the name, "Michael Andrew Fox," the name that was rightfully mine. I choose to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume--in spite of the celebrity spin version--that this knowing is one reason why he later changed his middle name to a random initial, "J." Second, in Family Ties, his first television series--which, I might add, I knew nothing about until its sophomore season--he played a character that was obviously based upon my own amusing life's story. Third, in terms of integrity, I later created package design for the cast doctor of J's second television show, Spin City. I explained my somewhat tenuous relationship with his patient, and he assured me that he would encourage J to send me a check to cover the aforementioned $35.00. Well, I doubt I need to tell you, I'm still waiting on my check.
What's the point of this unfortunate tale?
We are most likely to disappoint others when they discover we are not who they think we are.
Be authentic.
So, what's your learning?
