Office supplies...
I love shopping for office supplies. In bulk.

I love pencils and pens and markers.

Especially brush tip markers. Way cool.

I love paper. High quality paper of every weight and finish.

In fact, when I speak, the paper I use for my handouts
occasionally attracts greater curiosity than the content.

(I do, ahem, use an extraordinary grade of paper!)

My passion for bulk office supplies began with my grandfather.

Grandfather Fox owned and operated an industrial construction firm in Los Angeles. On the occasional visit to his office, he'd reach into his supply closet and give me silver tins filled with unsharpened green Fiber-Castell pencils; funky wheels of eraser adorned with miniature green brooms; and pristine tablets of paper. Typically, my grandfather, a quiet and gruff man, would hand me these treasures with a carefully chosen word of affection such as, "Here."

Thanks to my grandfather,
I can't have enough office supplies on hand.

My passion for bulk office supplies transcends hoarding. Well, mostly. It's more about creative self-expression. I love to furiously sketch ideas that churn up from within. The apostle Paul wrote, "For who knows a person's thoughts except their own spirit within them?" Exactly. That's why I love my office supplies. They give place to the expression of my spirit. In bulk. And stockpiles of pencil and paper are an invitation to expression; indeed, they create expectation.

But, delightfully, Paul added: "In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God...This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words" (1 Corinthians 2:11-13). Our God loves to give place to the expression of his Spirit. In bulk.

I think of the time He excitedly told His prophet, "Observe! Be astonished! Wonder! Because I am doing something in your days--You would not believe if you were told." (Habakkuk 1:5, NASB). Moments later, to the same prophet, He said, "Write this. Write what you see. Write it out in big block letters so that it can be read on the run" (Habakkuk 2:2, The Message).

The Father even used a "pen and paper" metaphor
to describe the incarnation of His Son: the Word of God (John 1:1).

Creative self-expression indeed.

Which makes me curious. Why my Grandfather Fox--a man of few words and a handful of opinions you just wouldn't want to commit to paper--would need office supplies. In bulk.

Ah, but come by sometime. I'll give you a tin of pencils.

What might you like to express?
What might you need to hear?

What's in your way?
Not enough office supplies, or something deeper?
