Dr. David G. Benner is a psychologist and author who has spent thirty-five years integrating psychology and spirituality. Among his numerous books is Soulful Spirituality: Becoming Fully Alive and Deeply Human, from which the following observation is pulled (pp. 136):
The path of life will inevitably take us through experiences we would never choose--experiences of depression, failure, illness, suffering, betrayal, abuse, neglect, anger, doubt, confusion, and eventually death. If we seek to avoid the experience of those dark places, we will lose contact with important dimensions of our being. We cannot suppress one emotion without shutting down access to vast regions of our soul. But when we dare to face those demons in the dark places of our interior self, we discover that life can be lived with more intensity, passion, and clarity of vision. We may also find it more genuinely interesting. Life may now begin to provide its own meaning in a way that was never possible when we embraced only the life we thought we wanted rather than the life we actually had.
