Note to self: "Who are you?"
|
I'm not an arrogant man.
Now, to be sure, I could give you a list of character flaws.
I'd never have imagined, however, that pride might be among them.
But I've learned--with some difficulty, I might add--that not all pride walks with swagger.
Pride wears a number of masks including a rather seditious form of "narcissistic humility":
"I hope they notice that I'm not concerned whether or not they notice me."
It's an unconscious behavior.
Which only means that it'd become so enmeshed in who I am that it'd become second nature.
Which explains why even trusted friends met resistance when kindly, faithfully, suggesting its presence.
Which supports the prophet's troubling declaration, "The heart is deceitful. Who can know it?"
I spent several troubling days of self-loathing and introspection, wondering, "What's real?"
How can I separate "False Self" from "True Self?"
And even--with a sardonic smile in the mirror-- "Who are you, I don't even know you!"
No really. "What's real?"
It took several weeks of contemplative reading and praying, discernment and direction, to understand--or, perhaps better, to begin to understand--the intents of my heart.
The apostle Paul penned something of a self-assessment in his epistle to the Galatian churches: the deeds of the flesh vs. the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:19-23). The deeds (note, plural) of the flesh and the fruit (note, singular) of the Spirit are more than personal character qualities; they're reflective of the nature and caliber of our relationships.
Our interaction and relationship with others, then, can be an objective indicator of the desire and wholeness of our hearts. So. . .
Do my relationships--family and friends, work and play, neighborhood and church--reflect...
--a spirit of competition; are they distinguished by selfishness in relationship (the deeds of the flesh)? Or...
--do they reflect a spirit of cooperation; are they distinguished by selflessness in relationship (the fruit of the Spirit)?
How might others assess how you show up in relationship?
If your relationships suggest boasting, challenging, envying--rather than love, joy, peace, patience, et al.--where's the place within awaiting transformation?
