The view from 30,000 feet... |
The fireworks were spectacular.
Explosions of color. Silent explosions of color.
It was the the Fourth of July, some thirty-five years past.
Communities, small and large, were simultaneously lighting the night sky.
I've watched such celebrations for a half-century.
But this night was different.
I was flying into Los Angeles, and the pyrotechnics were cresting somewhere below the plane.
It was quite surreal.
I was a quiet observer flying over neon groves of palm trees, midst sparkling diamonds, set against a black canvas.
The view from 30,000 feet can be beautiful.
This past weekend I flew over the central plains.
From above I saw the grid of townships and sections bounded by the principal meridians and baselines established early in our country's history.
From above I was reminded that cities of any size were initially founded, long ago, on the many rivers that serpentine the landscape.
From above it was apparent that most families keep up with their front yard much better than they do their backyard.
From above I watched as unseen persons--their anxious spirits and conversations muted to my ears--scurried toward their destinations via planes, trains, and automobiles.
The view from 30,000 feet can be compelling.
Have you thought about viewing your life from 30,000 feet?
The view from the ground can be chaotic.
Too much "noise" for clarity.
Too close for a reliable perspective.
Too hurried for contemplation.
To see the view from 30,000 feet, sketch a timeline of your life noting major milestones, directions, patterns, values, and more--anything that stands out from the mundane. Kind of like flying over the Colorado Plateau and coming upon John Ford's Monument Valley near the Arizona/Utah state line.
What does the big picture of your life reveal? What's "your story"? How has it unfolded? How will it inform your next steps?
The view from 30,000 feet can be illuminating.
Click here--no, here--to download a "treasure map" to help you view your life from 30,000 feet.
