The Director's Corner

Forget laughter. Countless epidemiological and clinical studies have demonstrated that exercise is the best medicine. No other medical intervention can influence overall well-being as positively as physical activity. The World Health Organization (WHO), the UK Chief Medical Officer and US Department of Health and Human Services are all recommending that adults do at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity, or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity each week, or a combination of the two.

Gregory Heath, an exercise scientist at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, states, "Exercise is one of the least appreciated, underused therapeutic tools available to the human race."

Exercise is so powerful  that Pedro Hallal, a physical activity epidemiologist in Brazil says, "You would need 12-13 different drugs to mimic all the effects of exercise". Exercise doesn't carry the side effects of medication. Of course, don't stop taking medication without checking with your medical provider first.

Welcome to August! As we enter another hot, humid month, let's remember to drink enough fluids. Water helps us to digest food, absorb nutrients, and get rid of unused waste. As we age, some people may lose their sense of thirst. So, let's drink up!

The IronOaks Fitness Center has plenty of activities to keep you cool and fit in August. Check out one of our wonderful group activity classes, one of Erik's workshops, or stop by for a workout in our Center.

As always, please call or stop by if you have any questions or comments. I hope you have a wonderful August.

August Workshops Available

Beginners TRX Workshop  (8/7/15 1:00 PM)

Suspension training, or TRX, is a highly effective total body workout. It is particularly good for strengthening your core and improving your balance. If you haven't experienced TRX training before, this is a great opportunity to find out how fun, safe, and challenging it is!

Beginners Freemotion Cable Cross Workshop (8/7/15 1:30 PM)

With dozens of different exercises, this is another type of equipment that provides a great total body workout. Similar to TRX training, it is an excellent tool for adding variety to your routine. This workshop is a great opportunity to learn about this versatile training tool!

Intermediate TRX Workshop (8/14/15 1:00 PM)

If you're comfortable with basic TRX exercises, this workshop is a great way to take your routine up a notch. A little more advanced than the beginners workshop, this workshop will build upon the basic TRX exercises and help you progress towards your goals.

Intermediate Freemotion Cable Cross Workshop (8/14/15 1:30 PM)

If you're already familiar with the Cable Cross, this workshop offers new exercises to expand your routine. The Cable Cross allows you to do exercises that can't be replicated by other machines, and this workshop will teach you how to get the most out of your training!

All workshops will be taught by Erik Reinertsen, CSCS. He is an experienced personal trainer who earned a BS in Kinesiology from Arizona State University.
