Palm Tree Pruning Tips from the ALC Department

The pruning requirements for palm trees vary from species to species, but all new foliage is produced from the terminal bud at the top of the crown and the lower, older fronds gradually turn brown and die. The correct technique for pruning is to remove yellow or brown fronds and the flower/fruit stalks in June or July. Green fronds should not be removed. Palm trees that are over-pruned tend to be vulnerable to low winter temperatures. If you have palm trees on your property, please have your landscape maintenance company prune your trees at least once a year in order to keep your trees healthy and attractive. This information was provided by SLS Landscape Company, the HOA common area maintenance company.

Green Pools in IronOaks

On occasion we might sustain a touch of algae in our community pools; however, this does not mean the pool is unsafe to swim in. We test to ensure the chlorine and PH is well within limits of Maricopa County Health Department standards. The licensed pool facilities staff maintains the pools/spas, and they begin their day at 4:30 am seven days a week.Issues which arise between the hours of 3:30 pm to 4:30 am will be corrected the following morning unless it is deemed an emergency.

When an algae concern happens, corrections are made that day or the following morning, depending on the chemical treatment required. If a radical treatment is necessary, we will temporarily close the pool until it's safe to swim in due to the chemicals used to control the issue. This is purely an esthetic issue which can happen overnight.

We recently experienced a green pool at the Ironwood Clubhouse. The Maricopa County Health Department was contacted to inspect this pool. Tests were performed to check the required chlorine level and the PH balance which both came back within County standards. The inspector stated as long as the chemical balance is correct and they can visually see the drain covers on the bottom, we are within county code and the pool is completely safe to swim in. The drain cover visual is in regards to turbidity.  Please know we do not consider a green pool acceptable and make all efforts to keep it under control daily.

Mosquito Alert

         Unwanted

              (dead or alive)

           Mosquitoes

There have been some reports of mosquito activity around IronOaks. These calls have been localized, which tells your HOA staff these insects are coming from water features, pools and potted plants containing standing water. This sounds harsh; however, all water areas on IronOaks common property, including the golf courses, are void of mosquito larva.

We're coming to you, for help to rid us of this insect which can potentially be a health hazard. All of us need to police our property for standing water or untreated water features. While our staff is on the lookout for breeding sites, it's not possible to see behind block walls that surround some homes.

If you see a potential hazard in a fellow neighbor's yard, we ask you to please speak with them about it. If you do not feel comfortable or this person is away, please generate a comment card or contact the IronOaks Facilities dept.

Strange as it may sound, a small swimming pool can generate 4000 mosquitoes per night. A bird bath is said to generate 200 per night. A pet's water dish around 20 per night. These insects will generally breed and stay near the location they were born. The mosquito's life cycle is not long.  If we remove the breeding site they will either die off, or go elsewhere looking for a new home where they can breed.

Softball Lake Fishing Opening Day

Softball Lake Open For Fishing

Sun Lakes Fly Fishing Club recently received permission to start fly fishing the Softbgraphic-baseball-sm.jpgall Lake from the IronOaks Management Team. A special "Thanks" to John Porter, Ironoak's Board President, Faye Stone, IronOaks' General Manager and Ron Kotnik, IronOak's Facilities Manager for bringing this together.

The inaugural day for fishing will be Monday August 3, 2015, starting at 6:30 am. Most of us will be done by 9:00 am which will give us the opportunity to have breakfast at the Oakwood's Poolside Restaurant where hopefully, some can tout their success, and others can share stories about the "big ones" that got away. In addition, I've also made arrangements for two professional fly fishing instructors to be on hand to work with those that need advice.

IronOaks owns the Softball Lake and the South Lake which is directly across Riggs Road and is connected by a large pipe. Both lakes will be open for us to fish. To fish the South Lake, just park your auto on the Price Road on the south side of Riggs and walk in.

Bathrooms at the Softball Lake will remain open during the day, and the chain closing off the parking lot should remain off during daylight hours as well. The lake is loaded with Tilapia, Grass Carp, Israeli Carp and Bass. According to Ron Kotnik, 900 pounds of 1 to 1.2 pound bass were recently stocked in the lake to give us a better opportunity to land lots of Bass. He also indicated that several of the carp resembled the size of one man submarines. If you're into carp fishing, it could be rod breaking time. Softball Lake is also one of the deepest lakes in IronOaks at 30 feet in the middle.
