Stay Cool and Get Multiple Health Benefits

Aquatic exercise has grown significantly in popularity for good reason. The pool provides a low impact environment, and offers resistance that works muscles from all angles. Many personal trainers are taking their training to the water to help clients cross train and reach their goals in other ways. The buoyancy of water reduces a person's "weight" by about 90%. Stress on weight-bearing joints, bones and muscles decreases, too. A 10 week course of cardiovascular water exercise "markedly reduced" systolic and mean arterial blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. Water's density is approximately 800 times that of air. This is an important contribution to the energy cost of aquatic exercise. Finally, a deep-water study showed that participants burned an average of 9.8 calories per minute during deep-water exercise, which is equivalent to walking of running at a pace of 10-11 minutes per mile.

In addition to aquatic exercise at IronOaks, if you haven't attended the Group Activity classes inside IronOaks Fitness Center, summer time is the perfect time to start. Our class schedule provides something for everyone. See the Group Activity Schedule in this Stay in the Loop. We would love to have you join us.

August Workshops Available

Beginners TRX Workshop  (8/7/15 1:00 PM)

Suspension training, or TRX, is a highly effective total body workout. It is particularly good for strengthening your core and improving your balance. If you haven't experienced TRX training before, this is a great opportunity to find out how fun, safe, and challenging it is!

Beginners Freemotion Cable Cross Workshop (8/7/15 1:30 PM)

With dozens of different exercises, this is another type of equipment that provides a great total body workout. Similar to TRX training, it is an excellent tool for adding variety to your routine. This workshop is a great opportunity to learn about this versatile training tool!

Intermediate TRX Workshop (8/14/15 1:00 PM)

If you're comfortable with basic TRX exercises, this workshop is a great way to take your routine up a notch. A little more advanced than the beginners workshop, this workshop will build upon the basic TRX exercises and help you progress towards your goals.

Intermediate Freemotion Cable Cross Workshop (8/14/15 1:30 PM)

If you're already familiar with the Cable Cross, this workshop offers new exercises to expand your routine. The Cable Cross allows you to do exercises that can't be replicated by other machines, and this workshop will teach you how to get the most out of your training!

All workshops will be taught by Erik Reinertsen, CSCS. He is an experienced personal trainer who earned a BS in Kinesiology from Arizona State University.

Women and Stroke: Unique Symptoms in Women

It is important to recognize stroke symptoms and act quickly.

Common stroke symptoms seen in both men and women:

Sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg

Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding

Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes

Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination

Sudden severe headache with no known cause

Women may report unique stroke symptoms:

       Sudden face and limb pain

       Sudden hiccups

       Sudden nausea

       Sudden general weakness

       Sudden chest pain

       Sudden shortness of breath

       Sudden palpitations

Call 9-1-1 immediately if you have any of these symptoms

Every minute counts for stroke patients and acting F.A.S.T. can lead patients to the stroke treatments they desperately need. The most effective stroke treatments are only available if the stroke is recognized and diagnosed within the first three hours of the first symptoms. Actually, many Americans are not aware that stroke patients may not be eligible for stroke treatments if they arrive at the hospital after the three-hour window.

If you think someone may be having a stroke, act F.A.S.T.

F-FACE: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A-ARMS: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S-SPEECH: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is speech slurred?

T-TIME: If you observe any of these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately.

NOTE THE TIME WHEN ANY SYMPTOMS FIRST APPEAR. If given within three hours of the first symptom, there is an FDA-approved clot-buster medication that may reduce long-term disability for the most common type of stroke.
