GOVERNANCE

OAKWOOD BALLROOM

THURDAY, FEBRUARY. 5; 9:00 AM

Did you ever attend an HOA Board meeting and come away a little frustrated? Did it seem like they spent too much time listening to boring reports and talking about minor things instead of big issues and planning for the future? Many boards have defined their management oversight role to include the review of proposed management actions and spending decisions, but have not really defined specific goals and expectations for the organization. This leads to management having to ask for permission, a lot of second-guessing, and an often painfully slow decision process. This situation is commonly described as "being down in the weeds".

The 2015 Board would like to address these kinds of issues by changing the way we govern. One approach under consideration is a model developed by John Carver called

"policy governance". The Club Management Association of America and the Community Association Institute have both adopted this approach as a "best practice".

At this Town Hall, we will view a DVD entitled, "Introduction to Policy Governance", produced by John and Miriam Carver. It is about 90 minutes long and is divided into five sections. There will be a little time for discussion after each section. The purpose is to introduce the topic and begin to create a shared understanding of the concepts. Be forewarned: if your eyes glaze over at the thought of discussing how to make policies, or, if you think the board functions just fine, but should do more of what it has been doing, you won't like this DVD. Many people consider this a pretty dry subject. However, if you would like to see a significant improvement in the way the Board functions, please join us.
