President's Message

President John Porter's January, 2015 Message

I first want to recognize our recently retired Board members, David Peters, Karen Jorgenson and Wayne Karp.

These dedicated individuals have served our Community for the past three years. Karen, as you know, stepped up to serve through 2014 when one of our Board Members had to step down for personal reasons. David served as a member at large in his first year. In 2013 he served as Secretary and in 2014, David stepped up to serve as our Board President. Wayne's three years of service included holding the position of Vice President in 2012 & 2013 and Member at large in 2014. Karen has accepted the position of ALC Director (Architectural and Landscaping Committee) and will continue to serve in this vital role.

Each of these individuals deserves the gratitude of our Members and Staff.

Please join me in thanking David, Karen and Wayne for a job well done!

Last week your Board of Directors held its' first Workshop. The focus of this was to have an open discussion to begin to develop the Board's and our Management's 2015 Objectives. The process that we employed is one that many of us have participated in, brainstorming. Our intent was to flush out the top-level ideas that our Directors put forward. It was not our intent to go into the details that these objectives will demand to action the programs.

The discussions resulted in the following:

Hire our General Manager to replace our retiring GM, Clark Champion

            Develop the Organizational Objectives

Review and update our Governance Policies

Review Governance Models to direct and support our Policies

Now the work will begin. Our first objective, hire our GM. This is proceeding at a fairly rapid pace currently. We have a candidate that is being vetted and we should have a pending offer out by no later than February 4th.

In preparation for our GM, we the Board, working with our current management team, will complete our Organizational Objectives. These objectives will be directly linked to our operations. The Board will define the Objectives, the expectations (performance goals), the accountability and the metric. We will work with Management to develop the method and representations of the targeted output.

Management will report on a regular basis. The GM is responsible and will be held accountable for resolving any deficiencies. Action plans and timetables will be submitted as part of the reporting process if the output falls below the expectation.

Our Policies that govern our Association's direction, manage our finances and direct and hold accountable our Management Team, are in dire need of review and updating. We have already started this process. Gary Market has taken on the task of collecting, reviewing content and categorizing these scattered Policies. Our next step is to organize these Policy documents and fill in where more detail and/or additional Policies are needed.

Governance through policy is an objective of this Board. We will be reviewing models for this process over the next couple of months. We believe that with a strong policy program and reporting process, the Board will be utilizing its time developing our Communities Strategic future to build value and ensure the quality standards we expect.

The Board recognizes that we, the Membership, have grown impatient and that the current costs and quality of service and goods associated with IronOaks amenities' will deteriorate the value of our Community and deplete our finances. Your Board accepts the responsibilities that you have bestowed on us! Actions have been initiated to begin to resolve the issues. We will develop Objectives to further these programs and to launch others.

We will hold regular Workshops devoted to specific objectives. Town Hall meetings will be scheduled.

Respectfully,

John Porter

Building and Grounds Committee

Building and Grounds Committee Held Its First Meeting         shiny-tree-button2.jpg

The first monthly meeting of the Buildings and Grounds Standing Committee was held on January 20, 2015. Mr. Gene McIntyre is the Chairman of the Committee, and membership is still open. There will be four sub-committees reporting to Buildings and Grounds. They include: Properties, Conservation, Risk Management, and Image related to the common area. A review of open action items along with background of existing old business was discussed. The Committee agreed to view their new Charter and submit any recommendations to Mr. McIntyre for Board approval at the February meeting. The Committee will meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 8:00 a.m. in the Greenbrier Room. The next meeting will be held on February 17, 2015 at 8:00 a.m.

Welcome Committee

Welcome Committee Update

In November, Welcome Totes were delivered to 13 new first time homeowners, and in December 3 more totes were delivered.  Out of the 202 new home closings in 2014, the Welcome Committee delivered a total of 97 totes. This number is up from 88 totes that were delivered in 2013.

The next new Homeowner Welcome Dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, March 31, 2015. All first time homeowners who closed on their homes between September 1, 2014, and February 28, 2015, will be invited. If you fall in this category watch for your invitation the first week of March, 2015.

A Message From Patrol

GOLF CART SAFETY

It has been noted that golf carts seem to be going full speed when going through the parking lots in the Community. Several ladies have complained that they were nearly hit as they exited their cars and started walking across the parking lot. Golf cart drivers should always be courteous and careful when around congested areas. Remember, your cart can go a lot faster than someone walking.
Parking lot speeds  should be no more than 5 mph.
Be safe, and be a responsible driver.

PEDESTRIANS BEWARE

Recently a woman was walking on N Dobson, near our gate, when she was struck by an automobile and died. The accident happened at about 9:00 pm and obviously it was dark.   Unfortunately she was walking WITH traffic on the right side of the road, and she was wearing dark clothing. That was two strikes against her.

Walkers should always walk on the left side of the road FACING traffic, and wear some type of white or reflective clothing. If you are walking at night, carry a flash light. Always be on the lookout for any possible threat to your well-being. Be safe.

A Message From ALC

Weed Watch                                                             simple-grass-graphic.gif

Homeowners are again asked to walk around their property and remove any weeds they find. After this last rain, new shoots are appearing amidst the granite on many front yards. The Architectural Landscape Guidelines state, "Any growth of weeds or other nuisance plants shall be controlled and removed in order to maintain a neat appearance of all landscaped areas at all times. Failure to maintain the landscape area around your home is subject to citations and possible fines." The ALC staff and committee hope you will want to keep your home looking the best it can possibly be. Please help us in this endeavor.

Thank You, ALC Office

Notaries are required to witness your signature.
 Golf Course Maintenance

Litter on the coursegolf2.jpg

Golfers, we want to make a good impression when non-residents come to play our courses. We all want to enjoy a round of golf and not see unsightly debris scattered around our courses. At times, you may see any or all of the following: fruit peels and apple cores in the rough, peanut and sunflower seed shells on the tees and greens, or discarded cigarettes and cigar ashes dropped on the greens. With the course renovation projects well under way, we are encouraging proper maintenance by our golfers to maintain the appearance of the courses. Your use of receptacles would be appreciated. Let's make golf an enjoyable activity for all. Please make an extra effort by properly disposing of litter, yours and someone else's, when you see it. It is just like fixing an additional ball mark on the green along with your own.  One more thing, please drop those broken tees in the Tee Caddy. Thank you in advance for your efforts to keep our courses beautiful, clean and playable.

Rake Placement in Bunkers

Ever have your ball roll into a trap only to find that your ball has rolled into the sand and against a rake placed parallel to the edge of the bunker? Your shot out of the bunker probably got harder because it is too close to the grass edge. To help minimize this issue, we ask that our golfers simply lay the rake in the sand near the edge, perpendicular to that edge ( 90 degrees to the grass). This should allow the ball to roll deeper into the bunker allowing an easier shot out of the bunker.

If the ball is caught between the rake and the bunker edge, and moving the rake causes the ball to move, you must replace the ball. Placing the rake perpendicular to the edge will help in avoiding this problem. A stroke penalty may occur if the ball is not replaced.

Missing Range Balls

Over the past couple of weeks we have noticed that our range ball supply has diminished substantially. At the beginning of the season, we had enough range balls to fill up the ball bin with extras to spare. This past week we barely had enough to fill the bin to three quarters full. This means we are missing close to 1500 golf balls. Please refrain from taking the balls with you if you haven't finished your bucket. Last year it was the baskets that disappeared, this year it's the balls. We will probably have to order another 200 dozen range balls to make sure we have enough to make it through the season.

Homeowner Satisfaction Survey

SECOND ANNUAL SATISFACTION SURVEY

We want to hear from you

To date, only 838 surveys have been completed online. Last year input   was received from almost 1600 homeowners. We all have heard concerns expressed by homeowners about various HOA issues. However, talking to friends and neighbors doesn't accomplish anything. Your suggestions and concerns are important to the Board, Management, and the various committees. Last year, the results from the first survey provided solid information on how and where improvements in the management of our community could be made. Now is the time to take action and let your concerns be known to the HOA.

The results of this year's survey will be analyzed and compared to last year's survey to assess progress toward attaining the goals in the Master Plan. Results will again be shared with the Management, Board, committees, and homeowners.

Because this survey tool does not allow you to go back to a previous page when taking the survey, you may preview the survey on the homeowner page of the IronOaks website before you actually complete the survey.

If you have neighbors and friends who do not have computer access, please encourage them to complete paper copies of the survey located at the Ironwood and Oakwood Clubhouses.  Because this survey is being conducted by a few volunteer homeowners at no cost to the HOA, we ask only those without computer access complete the paper surveys.

If you have questions/concerns about taking the online survey, please submit a comment card so we can assist you.

Time is running out to give your input. This survey will conclude at 4:00 p.m. on February 11. Take the time to complete the survey and make sure your voice is heard.

Halley Gate

Halley Gate Fountain Update                                     update_paper_hdr.jpg

Homeowners can look forward to having the Halley fountain flowing once again!

Ron Kotnik, our Facilities Director, will be presenting at the January Board Meeting a plan to re-plumb the fountain at the Halley Gate.  Lake water from the lake behind the fountain will go from the lake and circulate through the fountain and back into the lake. This will save on water bills, help the circulation in that lake, and cut the frequency for needed maintenance to the fountain. If the work is approved, all of it should be completed, including new lighting, before the end of February.

Ironwood Swimming Pools

Ironwood Swimming Pool Gas Lines Update

The problem with heating the Ironwood pools started last October when a gas leak was discovered. That was fixed promptly, however, subsequent testing showed another leak. Several utility locating companies were called in to try to locate the gas pipes, but to no avail. Southwest Gas is currently working to develop and engineer a quote to run a gas line down Halley Drive to supply natural gas to the Halley pool and in front of the Ironwood Clubhouse to Ribbonwood to the Voax pool. The Facilities Department hopes to have the whole project completed before the end of February.

General Manager's Message

General Manager's Message

I want to emphasize the importance of the seminars listed below. These have been planned and set up by the Conservation Committee for our benefit. Last year most of the seminars played to Standing Room Only crowds.

SAVE THESE DATES

February 10 - Landscaping 101: Soils, Plants, Fertilizer, Amendments, Pesticides

February 17 - Landscape Design: Planting Composition, Irrigation

February 24 - Shrubs and Ground Cover: Selection, Watering, Selective Pruning

March 3 - Trees: Desert-adapted, Citrus, Tropical - planting, staking, pruning, watering

Oakwood Ballroom A - 6:00 pm - all dates Tuesday evenings

Due to great response in 2014, your Conservation Committee has arranged for more "Caring for Your IronOaks Home" seminars, this time with more room and the stage in the Ballroom.

Mike Scully, owner of our new common-area landscaping service company, will present seminars on caring for our yards in this desert landscape. Mike has every designation possible as well as most awards someone in his business can receive. His knowledge of Arizona, our water, our plants and caring for them is vast. Even if you attended last year's presentation, you will learn something new from Mike.

We have made arrangements with Sunsets to open at 4:30 pm to accommodate early diners each evening. Since Tuesdays are comfort food night, there should be something delicious for everyone.

Reservations are required to guarantee you will have a chair - please email  ConservationSLS@gmail.com and tell us which sessions you will attend and who you are registering. Also let us know if you have questions about your landscape you would like to ask during the question and answer session.

These seminars were so popular last year we ran out of space, so we have room for 200 this year. Please tell your neighbors and other friends to register early too. The public is welcome, but IronOaks homeowners come first, of course.

A Message From The Plant Lady

Are you killing your plants with kindness?                          plant.jpg

Something is not right. Your plants look sickly, yellow, droopy and pathetic. All of these symptoms do not necessarily mean that you need to water. The number one cause of plant failure is too much water.

Healthy roots are the foundation of healthy plants. They not only need water, they need oxygen. Over watering displaces the oxygen in the soil and the tiny root hairs that take in water get crushed and rot. The soil will be damp, but the plant will be wilted.

How do you know whether your plants need more or less water? For indoor or outdoor potted plants, simply feel the soil. Most plants like to go dry to the touch before watering again.  If there is any moisture to the touch, wait a few days before watering. Caution! Do not use water that has been softened with salt to water any plants. When it is time to water, use a method called "soak and cycle." Wet the soil with enough water to cover the top layer of soil. If a plant is very dry, the water will just run off the surface, down the sides of the pot, and out the bottom, never getting to the roots. Add just enough water to allow it to soak in. Wait at least 15 minutes or more for the water to soak in, then add the last amount of water. Any water sitting in the saucer after 30 minutes should be discarded.

Dog Parks

There have been suggestions from a few homeowners about having a dog park in IronOaks. Since all projects are on hold due to parking space considerations, you may want take your dog to a dog park near here that is provided by the City of Chandler.

There are two dog parks close to IronOaks. The closest is at Snedigar Sportsplex at Ocotillo and Alma School roads. It is 2.0 miles from the Ironwood Clubhouse and 3.2 miles from the Oakwood Clubhouse. The hours are 6:00 am to10:30 pm. The park is closed on Wednesdays from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm for maintenance. The other dog park is at Paseo Vista Recreation Area located at 3850 S. McQueen Road north of Ocotillo Road. This park is 5.2 miles from the Oakwood Clubhouse and 3.7 miles from the Ironwood Clubhouse. The hours are the same as Snedigar Park. This dog park includes drinking fountains for dogs and obstacles and other dog-agility equipment.

At all dog parks, you will need to take a leash, but then you will be able to let your dog freely run in the fenced areas.
