Director's Corner

Holidays usually center around food, and lots of it. With the holiday season upon us, the fear of overeating and weight gain can be overwhelming. With good planning, following healthy nutrition tips and exercising consistently, you will be able to coast through the holidays without overeating or feeling guilty.

Here are 6 helpful holiday eating tips:

  1. Plan in advance. If you know you will be going to a Holiday Party in the evening, have well balanced meals throughout the day, then have a small dessert at the party.
  2. Do not skip meals because you are going to a holiday dinner. Eat your usual breakfast and lunch. Skipping meals can lead to overeating, and feeling out of control.
  3. If you go to a buffet, survey the entire table and all the foods offered. Decide what your favorite foods are. You do not need to have it all.
  4. A balanced plate is filled half with vegetables, one quarter with starch, one quarter with protein.
  5. Pace yourself. Take a small break in between the main meal and dessert.

Now that you are armed with effective nutrition advice, it's important to exercise consistently throughout the holiday season. Our staff at the IronOaks Fitness and Racquet Center is eager to assist YOU in increasing your strength, cardiovascular fitness, balance, flexibility and general overall happiness and health. We are here to help you meet your fitness and wellness goals.

IronOaks Fitness & Racquet Club is pleased to offer a preventive health event.

Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, will host their affordable, non-invasive and painless health screenings on 12/8/2014.  Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount).  All five screenings take 60 to 90 minutes to complete.  In order to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above $129, please call 1-888-653-6441 or visit www.lifelinescreening.com/community-partners
