Committee Update

                  Food & Beverage Committee Update

The main focus of the October meeting was interviewing the HOA Board candidates who were able to attend the meeting. Gary Market, Phil Tollefson and Bill Thompson answered several questions asked by the committee members. Further, the Committee has actively been reviewing and revising the Committee charter to be presented for Board approval. The three candidates present at the meeting stated support of the charter to be presented.

Amenity & Common Area Survey

We want to hear from you

HAVE YOU COMPLETED YOUR AMENITY USAGE SURVEY?

The Amenity Usage Survey will assist the board and management in making decisions now and in the future. This survey is different from the Annual Homeowner Survey that assesses progress towards the goals in the Master Plan. That survey will be sent early in 2015.

The survey will take about ten minutes to complete. If there are two homeowners in the household, you  can take the survey at the same time, or each may complete the survey separately. Caution! Once you click "continue" to the next page, you may not go back to previous pages. However, if you close the survey and reopen it later, it will take you directly to the page where you closed it. If you need assistance with the online survey, please submit a comment card. Assistance will be provided.

Paper copies are available at the the Ironwood and Oakwood Clubhouses for people who do not have access to a computer. If you have friends or neighbors that do not have a computer, please let them know how to obtain their copy in order that their voice can also be heard.

We ask that only those without computer access use the paper copies due to the intensive labor involved in hand-tallying paper copies.

Food & Beverage Operations

heavy-placesetting.jpg

As many are aware, on August 21, 2014, the Board of Directors held a workshop in regards to the Food & Beverage operations. The result of the workshop being a very detailed and aggressive action plan with roughly forty items for staff to research, implement or comply with. Items such as consistency in hours, reducing the bottom line annual deficit, program initiatives and reducing labor costs are  examples of those detailed within the action plan.

As a first step in achieving such action items, the Food & Beverage team diligently analyzed the business operations, including purchasing trends as it relates to menu items and time and day of purchase, as well as cost of labor and labor allocation. As a result of the analysis, the Food & Beverage team has designed new menus and will be implementing new consistent hours as of November 11, 2014 for each venue. As a second step, standards for labor cost analysis and tracking have been implemented to assure labor costs are on par to expectations. Further, all management staff has received ServSafe for Managers training, earning the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification, accredited by the American National Standards Institute. The staff will also complete training on alcohol awareness through TIPS in the upcoming weeks. These efforts set the tone for assuring amenity quality while utilizing sound business methods of operations.

Pool Announcement

"Cool Voax Pool and Halley Pool and Spa"

The recent lack of heat at the Voax and Halley pools and spas was due to a broken gas line. Southwest Gas shut off the gas and Mike Davis Plumbing repaired the leak. It was learned that Southwest Gas could not resume service until blue prints from a civil engineer were obtained and Maricopa County completed an inspection. Currently the Facilities Department is waiting for the final inspection. Please feel free to contact the Facilities Department if you have any further questions or would like an up-date on the status of the reopening of the pools and spas.

Sun Lakes Fly Fishing News

Thanks to several club members for volunteering at the Ironoaks Activity Show October 25th.We had a great turn out and we were able to offer plenty of information about our club. In addition, we had nine residents join our email list to either receive information or join our club. Our core of fly fishermen and women is growing! As with any type of club, you have active & non-active members. Currently we have members that actually like to get out and fish and those who talk about how they used to fish. My personal goal for the club is to have a minimum core of 10-14 members that enjoy fly fishing on a regular basis. Some will enjoy stream fishing versus lake fishing. Others will prefer trout fishing over bass fishing.

.

I have been asked on several occasions if we encourage or allow bait fishermen to join our club. The name of our club is Sun Lakes Fly Fishing Club not Sun Lakes Fishing Club. One of the philosophies of the club advocates "Catch & Release".  Some members like to bring spinning & fly rods with them when they fish. Because fly fishing is much more technical than bait fishing, it took me several years to make a permanent transition to fly fishing. I do not care if anyone brings a spinning rod with them, but the topic of bait fishing and different spinners isn't something we will be discussing at future meetings.

Earlier this week Randy Smith and I spent a half day fishing the lower Salt and Verde Rivers. The Verde had limited water and the Salt River water was brown in color. It wasn't easy fishing, but we managed to land a few bass and one sucker. Trout and bass fishing in this area should be much better later in the year and it's only a 45 minute drive from our community.

Last but not least, Jack Houck from Orvis is scheduled to do a power point presentation on trout fishing in Arizona. The presentation will be Monday, November 3rd at 6:30 pm and will be held in the Oakwood Library.  Jack is a tremendous orator and definitely knows all about Arizona fly fishing. We will also be discussing plans for fishing trips in the upcoming months.
