Great Expectations

Rev Tony at pulpit

This is a season of expectations, both religious and secular. This is the first Sunday of Advent, the middle of Hanukkah, three weeks prior to the Winter Solstice, and thirty-one days prior to the secular New Year of 2014. What are your great expectations?

Please join us this Sunday for a very special Children's Worship. On the first Sunday of each month from 10:30-11am the children and youth gather together in the Sophia Fahs rooms for a time for reflection, renewal and community building.

Our theme this month will focus on holiday traditions and rituals. Come share your holiday traditions with us, have fun, and learn how to create rituals for holidays and every day.

This Sunday is the 4th full day of Hanukkah. If you have any dreidels to share please bring them so we all can play! Something to ponder:

What is Chalica? Is Chalica part of your family traditions? Let's learn together!

Our nursery is open every Sunday for our littlest children ages 0-3 to provide a safe and loving environment under the care of experienced staff and volunteers.

Our Beacon Youth Group (8th-12th grade) will meet after the worship service from 12-2pm, to plan for their youth conference trip held in Tallahassee on December 6th-8th.

Help Plant City Farmworkers

UUC collects much needed blankets for farmworkers in the Plant City area each year.

If you would like to help, there will be a blanket box for cash donations on the Social Action table each week. If you have a  new or gently used, clean blanket you can bring it in as well.

We will be collecting in the lobby each Sunday.

Mitten Tree

Each year we work with an agency that helps needy families and children. We receive a list of children with names, ages, gender and wishes. The R/E children, under the direction of Christine Pensa, cut and decorate the mittens. A committee of the Social Justice Council takes the mittens and glues the information onto the back of each mitten and hangs it on the holiday tree in our lobby.

December 1st thru the 8th UUC members ad friends select a mitten and then purchase a requested item. Very important, we recommend that you limit your gifts to a total of $35 per child so that each child receives an equally priced item. Be sure to record your name on the master list next to the tree when selecting your mitten so that we can make sure each child receives a gift.

Return the unwrapped gifts; including wrapping paper if possible, to UUC by December 15th in time for delivery. Your generosity is very much appreciated.
Khasi Hills School
Khasi girl in blue
We have supported the Margaret Barr Memorial School in the Khasi Hills of India for the past eight years.  The Social Justice Council will be accepting donations in any amount beginning November 24th for our ninth and final year of support.  This is the last chance you have to contribute to the Margaret Barr Memorial School and see them through until next year. Please continue your generous support during our final campaign.  Stop at the Social Justice table and sponsor or donate.  Email Marlene Calderone  with any questions.   You can also donate here

Octagon Roof Repair

The roof leaks into the Westwood Room are fixed, but at a cost double the original estimate because of surprises found in the underlayment and flashing. The Property Committee is now working with the contractor to avoid surprises in fixing the leaks into the Octagon's front door area.
Events This Coming Week

Reader's Forum

Every Friday through December 13th, we will discuss the book One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd by Jim Fergus. This is the fictional story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. Jim Fergus vividly depicts the American West.

On December 6 please bring ideas for our next book selection.

For more information, Readers Forum.

Reader's Forum is led by Catherine & John Conover. We meet every Friday 10:00-11:30 AM in the Chorale Room. All are welcome!
Regenerative Film Series

Wednesday, December, 4 at 7:00 pm  in the Octagon

"Let thy Food be thy Medicine and thy Medicine be thy Food" - Hippocrates. That is the message from the founding father of modern medicine echoed in the controversial documentary film Food Matters from Producer-Directors James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten Bosch. This film continues UUC's "Regenerative Film Series," dedicated to promoting a healthier planet and healthier people.
Plan Ahead for These Coming Events

Caregivers Meeting

Wednesday, December 11 at 2:00 p.m. in the Maxwell Library

Are you connected to someone who is needing or receiving long term care, either locally or from a distance? We meet monthly as a chance to connect with others who are doing the same. Come join us.
Christmas Potluck Dinner

Our Holiday potluck party this year will be hosted by Ann and Joe Myers, on Saturday, December 14th, starting at 5:00 PM, until 10:00 PM.  They could use more help guiding parking and to assist in the kitchen.  Email Ann for details..
Congregational Retreat Fundraiser Luncheon

On Sunday, Dec 15 at 12:00 pm in the UUC Social Hall.

Please join us after service in the social hall for a luncheon to raise money for the Congregational Retreat. Lunch will include your choice of soup, stew or chili; salad, bread and dessert for $5 and soda, juice and water for $1 each. We will also be offering holiday gift wrapping for an additional suggested donation (TBD).

The Congregational Retreat is an annual event that allows its attendees to participate in hikes, canoeing, zip line, archery, labyrinth, and a variety of other social activities together. By having this time together, outside in nature, it allows for much more intimate bonding and conversation than the sometimes over scheduled Sunday afternoon social hour. Our committee is passionate about providing all who wish to attend this event the chance to do so.

We are in need of donations and volunteers for the luncheon. If you would like to help us please email Jenn Bouchie.

Thank you!
