NURTURING A RELIGIOUS LIFE

Rev. Abhi Janamanchi

Rev Abhi

The great end in religious instruction, wrote William Ellery Channing, is "to awaken the soul, to excite and cherish spiritual life."  In what ways does our lifespan religious education program "excite and cherish spiritual life?"  The service will feature brief reflections by some of our youth who recently completed OWL (Our Whole Lives), the UUA's sexuality and spirituality program, and a recognition of teachers.

Annual Congregational Meeting

Board Pres.

Our Interim Minister, Rev. Dr. Anthony Johnson, will be here on August 1, 2013.   I am sure you have questions about how we will proceed with the Five year strategic plan and the proposed building Capital Fund drive. Our UUA consultant, Barry Finkelstein, strongly advised the Board to wait on any proposed capital fund-raising until we can share our hopes and dreams with Rev. Johnson.

However, we have some urgent repairs requiring attention - the air conditioning units for the Octagon and repairing the flashing around the Octagon windows, which will hopefully take care of the roof leaks. During Sunday's annual congregational meeting, one of the items that the Board proposes is to vote on is the release of some restricted funds to take care of these urgent repairs. This is money we have on hand and will not require any additional fund-raising.

We are planning a pot-luck lunch immediately following service and before the congregational meeting.   Please plan to attend lunch and then this important decision making meeting.  If you cannot attend the meeting, the last page of the meeting informational package sent out earlier this week includes a Proxy form for you to complete and return to the UUC office.

I will see you on Sunday.

Susan

Spirit of Life Logo

Please join us for a very special Sunday as we recognized all the hard work and dedication of our Religious Enrichment Program teachers.

Our children and youth will join their families for the first part of the worship service for the Teacher Appreciation Ceremony and then go to their classrooms to enjoy a celebration of their year together.

There will be a luncheon following the worship service and before the Congregation Annual Meeting that begins at 12:45pm. Childcare will be provided.

Are you looking for a way to make a difference this summer? Be a part of our Religious Enrichment Summer Program as our youth explore the ethics of theology through film and our children embrace the spirituality of play! Please join us on June 2nd from 12-2pm for a Summer Volunteer Orientation and find out more! All are welcome.

Undie Sundays

Undie Sundays will continue through June 9th. During this time we will be collecting NEW underwear for homeless men and women, who are living at the Pinellas Safe Harbor shelter. To learn more about the shelter go to http://www.safeharborpinellas.org/

"Underwear" includes the usual underwear as well as socks. Second hand clothes are fairly easy to get, but our annual  underwear drive fills a real need at the shelter. When we deliver the underwear this summer the congregation will be invited to a tour of the facility.

"Immigration is the civil rights issue of our time". Several people, including Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), have stated this, and as legislation goes to Congress, we want our legislators to know that we really want reforms now. There will be a petition on the Social Justice table this week asking that general principles, such as keeping families together and including a path to citizenship, are enacted. Please help by signing this petition, calling our senators to reinforce their work on this, or asking your Representative what his or her position on this will be (Phone numbers will be available at the table).

The Hispanic outreach preschool project is about to begin its second summer. The program is an initiative of our Social Justice Council. Every Thursday morning for 1 ½  hours four members of the UUC and 6-10 children and their moms spend time reading stories, singing, making arts and crafts projects and just having fun! The goal of the program is to introduce English to young children from Spanish speaking homes and to introduce children age 2-4 to a group environment to get them ready for school.

Would you like to become part of this exciting outreach project? There is no experience necessary. If you like being with young children and can pass a background screening you can become part of the team. For more information speak to Barbara Brandt, Donna Polhamus, or Linda Stoller, or email Social Justice.
