Reason, Reverence, and Responsibility
Rev. Amy Carol Webb
The service will explore the Fifth Source of Unitarian Universalism: Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit. Amy plans to work with rationalism, scientific method and empiricism (both their powers and perils) citing some of our history - focusing Religious Humanism as a source of our moral imperative, of conscious and conscientious compassion grounded in the here and now. Amy is a long time singer-songwriter.
Editor's 2 ¢:

lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.

Children's Religious Enrichment |
On the First Sunday of the month, the children and youth come together in the Maxwell Library/Social Hall at 10:30 am to participate in a worship service designed just for them; an opportunity for children to do church in a way they can understand. Our theme for February is the Fifth Source of Unitarian Universalism: the use of reason and the discoveries of science. Our activities will include different science experiments. Volunteers are always needed and appreciated.
Are you looking for a way to give back to your spiritual home? The Religious Enrichment program has many volunteer opportunities available, so please contact Christine Pensa, UUC Religious Education Coordinator. |

Above and Beyond - January |
Congratulations to Barb Shimer. She is this month's recipient of our Above and Beyond Award. This recognition is given each month to one of our UUC members who has given of their time and effort to further the mission of this congregation. Barb receives this award because of her dedication and work in many areas: She is part of the Social Justice Council and works on the Environmental Justice Team. She is a regular volunteer in the UUC office, she helps with the Care Bears, giving rides to those in need and keeping in touch with some of our home-bound friends. Barb is a wonderful person and we are very pleased to honor her many contributions to this religious community. Thank you, Barb. |

On Friday, February 1st, we begin discussing the book The Greater Journey: Americans in Parisby David McCullough. McCullough writes, "not all pioneers went west." In The Greater Journey, he tells the enthralling, inspiring, and until now, untold story of the adventurous American artists, writers, doctors, politicians, and others who set off for Paris in the years between 1830 and 1900, hungry to learn and to excel in their work. What they achieved would profoundly alter American history. Telling their stories with power and intimacy, McCullough brings us into the lives of remarkable men and women who, in Saint-Gauden's phrase, "longed to soar into the blue."
Reader's Forum is led by Catherine & John Conover and meets every Friday at 10 a.m. It is free, with only a suggested $5 donation per month for coffee. All are welcome. For more information, go to Readers Forum. |

Message from Rachel Christensen |
I spent the month of January in Chicago attending classes at Meadville Lombard Theological Seminary. And I am delighted to be Home! For a Florida girl, it is a challenge to learn how to dress and get along there. I was there for the coldest weekend in three years - zero degrees in the morning, when I was on my way to the bus. I found I was fine as long as I wore everything I packed. Three shirts, a sweater, a sweatshirt, my coat, scarf, hat and gloves. Layers were my saving grace.

Peggy Long: The students of all ages, dressed in their uniforms of blue skirts and pants with matching blue v-neck sweaters and stripped ties, greeted us. They sang a wonderful little action song about planting and tending seeds of love. We gave them candy. They gave us cards they had made for us. The school supplies we took them were given to the teachers. We gave the children scarves UUC members had made for them. The boy that my grandson wrote to for several years had transferred to another school, so I didn't get to meet him. However, one of the teachers was able to tell me about him. It was quite a memorable day.

Standing On the Side of Love 30 Days of Love Beginning on January 20th, UUC joined other UU congregations in celebrating 30 days of Love. Between January 20th and February 17th, the Social Justice Council and others in our UUC Community are sponsoring a series of events which will make this a time of intentional action, service, education, reflection and fellowship. The January Ruah will be the kick off and the UU District Choral Festival will be the spirited closing. Wear your UUC or Standing on the Side of Love to all events. For a listing of the 30 Days of Love events see the Event Flier, visit the Social Justice Table after the service or contact us. |

This may be the year that CIR (Comprehensive Immigration Reform) actually happens. Members of the Social Justice Team have been meeting (by Congressional district) to work with a wide coalition of groups (church, immigrant rights groups', labor, and others) to pressure our congresspeople to support CIR. The principles we have been supporting are those proposed by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
The next meeting of the Economic Justice Team will be on Monday, February 4th, 10:30 AM, Westwood Room. This is a particularly important meeting as we will be planning our support of the CIW action in March. Please let Donna Polhamus know if you cannot attend this meeting or any morning meetings but would like to be a part of the EJT.
Plan to visit The Clearwater Gateway Farmer's Market. Not only do they have lovely food and crafts, but they are sponsored by the Hispanic Outreach Center that we work with. They are still new and need our support. So you can feel good as you eat your Ginger-Pecan Dulce de Leche cookies (baked by Unitarians!).
If you would like to join us in this work, please contact me and I will put you in touch with the group working on educating your representative on this very important issue.
