A Harvest of Thanks

Rev. Abhi Janamanchi
Rev Abhi

Gratitude is a state of mind, and it cannot be forced, no matter what the season seems to demand. The service will explore how we might cultivate gratitude in our lives and allow thanksgiving to arise in us by grace, when it will.

 Notes from the Board President
Susan Hegner

The last two Octagon reports from the Board were written by individual Board members not by the Board President (even though my photo was attached).    I would like to thank Judy Wade for the first one which was about the September Board meeting  and Cindi Nohe for the second which was about the October Board meeting.  They wrote excellent reports of the items, issues and brainstorming activities conducted by the Board during those two Board meetings.  Look for future reports written by other Board leaders in the coming months.

Please take your turn as the host for the social hour after the service.   There is nothing to bring as supplies will be on hand, no coffee to perk, as that is done early by staff, and clean up is limited to putting left-overs away and washing out the punch bowl.     Please look for the sign up on the counter between the kitchen and the social hall.

Very important, sad to say, our UUC pledge income is quite a bit lower than it has been in past years.   Please  keep your pledge  up to date, so that we can continue the projects and programs for our congregation and the greater community.

Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Susan Hegner, Board President

Important Message from the Treasurer

I really love the way Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) asks their community of supporters to do there part and contribute what they can. Your membership and participation at UUC is appreciated greatly and as the Treasurer and a member of the board I wish to say we all count on each other's support and really need each one to do their part.

The first half of this fiscal year has not met the operating budgeted income. We are not able to meet the actual expenses with our current level of operating funds. We have not received the pledge income to date as was anticipated. We know that you understand that pledge support is how we pay our operating expenses. Your consistent and continued support is what makes this the vibrant and blessed community of which we all enjoy being a part.

As your Board of Trustee's Treasurer I am asking all of you supporting members to review your annual pledge amounts and determine if you are on track to have half of your pledge paid by the end of November. Pledge amounts can be paid in advance and any amount paid up till December 31, 2012 may be included with your tax exemptions for calendar year 2012.

If you need clarification or assistance with any aspect of your support please contact me or call 727-735-8460. Thank you again for doing your part and your continued support of our Unitarian Universalist of Clearwater Congregation.

Sheila M. Knaust, BOT Treasurer

Craig is a retired public defender and a member of this congregation.
Children's Religious Enrichment: Thanks and Compassion
Please join us this Sunday as we gather together to give thanks and contemplate the following questions:

Pre-K and Kindergarten: What does Thanksgiving mean to me?
1st-2nd Grade: What is compassion?
3rd-5th Grade: What does the Old Testament tell me about my life today?
6th-8th Grade: What does Unitarian Universalism mean to me?
9th-12th Grade: Youth group will not meet this Sunday.
Our littlest UUs (ages 0-3) in our Nursery will create a Thanksgiving thankful tree.

Parents, please take a moment and ponder these questions with your children. Remember, Religious Education is not just for Sunday. Let's make it happen all week long.
Hats Off!!
HATS OFF TO THE SUMMERTIME UUC MEDIA TEAM for stellar work May thru September. Because of summer vacations, job requirements and fatherhood (congrats Callen!)  we had a smaller force - specifically

Jeff Anderson, Katherine Gomez, Sue Boone, Debbie Langrock, Juan Carlos Garcia and Linda Stoller.  They covered 8 or 10 slots in Sunday services every month, Festival Ruah, special services, all while hoping for updated sound and video equipment. Carl Hansen, former long-time member of the Tech Team (now renamed), should be added to the SUMMER TEAM ACCOLADES because he stepped up for memorial and other special services.

Message from Rachel
Rachel Christensen

Are you a caregiver? Are you caring for a member of your family or extended family? An aging parent, or your spouse, or a sibling or child who needs extensive care? Perhaps in the area, or maybe from a distance, perhaps in your own home?

There are many in our congregation who are caregivers, who are making decisions about time and resources and care and trying to find balance in their lives.

Would you be interested in participating in a supportive group with other people who are also caregivers? This would be to build community and support for one another, in a group with specific focus on the caregiving role.

Please contact me if you might be interested. Together we can make our burdens lighter.

Did You Forget Something?

Some winners of the UUC Fiesta Auction Chance Drawing have not yet claimed their prizes. A list of winning green ticket chance drawing numbers will be displayed in the Octagon lobby from Sunday November 18 through November 25. Please bring your raffle ticket stubs to see if you are a winner.  Prizes that remain unclaimed will be put into a future chance drawing.
Join the TrUUbadores and Sing!

For those of you who are new to U.U.C. and don't know me, allow me to introduce myself.  My name is Dr. David Katz and I am the music director at UU's of Clearwater.

I designed TrUUbadores for families with children in mind.  TrUUbadores is an intergenerational performing group of parents, grandparents and their children.  We provide a casual atmosphere to sing and play instruments for music which is highly accessible, engaging and fun for both young and old.
TrUUbadores performs about once a month and meets on Sunday mornings right before worship.  Now, how convenient is that, right?  We begin rehearsal at 9:45 and rehearse for about 30 or 35 minutes.  There is no age limit on either side of the spectrum, and I encourage all who want to be a part of the group to bring a friend as well!
We are having a special "Get to know TrUUbadores" during December.  We will rehearse in the choral room at 9:45 a.m. on December 2nd and 9th and will play in worship for a very  special Spirited Worship on December 16th.  If you are interested, please plan to attend the Dec 2nd rehearsal.

I look forward to seeing you then!
Blessed be and Shalom,
Dr. David Katz, Music Director

The theme of the Choral Festival this year is "Love." You can show your love by assisting the chorale in feeding our visiting chorale members on Saturday, February 16, 2013. We expect approximately 80 to 100 singers. We need your help for lunch time, 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.; break time, 1:45 to 2:30 p.m.; and dinnertime, 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. Duties will include set-up, serving and clean-up.  Please consider helping for all or part of the day.

It is exciting to have so many singers from all over the state visiting UUC. We are honored to be the host chorale for the event and look forward to sharing our hospitality with them.
If you can help, email Jeanne Carney or Janice Kazlauskas.

Environmental Justice

Green Team Notes

Please contact Dotti Doyle if you are interested in participating in new or existing green projects.

Celebrate "America Recycles Day" today, November 15th. Before you throw anything out, remember: there's no such place as AWAY. Everything goes somewhere. Reduce, reuse, recycle. Save energy, reduce carbon emissions, learn to ride the bus. On Saturday, December 1st join us and a PSTA guide to take the bus from UUC to Countryside Mall for some holiday shopping.  Contact Barbara Shimer for further details.

Are you passionate about environmental issues? Can you envision the big picture, as well as the details? Can you lead others within the structure of UU principles to achieve re-accreditation as a Green Sanctuary congregation with the UUA? If you said "yes" to these questions, contact Linda Stoller for consideration as the next team leader for the Environmental Justice/Green Team. Dotti "GreenJeans" Doyle is stepping down from that position effective January 1, 2013. She is grateful to all who have helped with green projects over the past several years, accomplishing many goals, decreasing the carbon footprint of UUC, raising the green consciousness of the congregation, and achieving Green Sanctuary status. She will be available as an advisor to the next team leader.

Economic Justice

At a meeting on November 13th, at the Hispanic Council, two staff members from the RCS Foodbank and the Salvation Army Foodbank were comparing how low their food supplies were. Donations are down 20-30% from this time last year and demand is up. So this is a good time to get rid of those hurricane supplies you were keeping for emergencies. Bring them to church to the RCS Food Box this Sunday and help a severe situation. Or provide them with greens (the kind with a presidential portrait on it.)  Checks can be sent to: RCS Food Bank, 700 Druid Road, Clearwater, FL 33756 .

Once again the EJT will be collecting blankets for farm workers in Plant City. Bring your blankets to church this week through the beginning of December and we will take them to Plant City for the National Farm Workers Ministry Toy Distribution for Christmas. Questions:contact  Harriet Ha-Sidi.

Last Saturday Anne Burnham and Donna Polhamus attended the UU Southwest Cluster Meeting about the most effective ways to work with the Coalition of Imokolee Workers (CIW). The meeting was very inspiring (more about the meeting later) but the picture below shows the protest outside the Port Charlotte Publix that ended the day.

A last reminder about the Sacrificial Soup Supper this coming Saturday, November 17 at 5:30 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Clearwater, FL. Bring new socks and underwear for kids under 12 and warm blankets for folks of all ages to support the Farm Worker Christmas Project and enjoy homemade lentil soup and bread. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Raymond Arsenault, of the University of Southern Florida.

We will be carpooling at 5 PM from UUC. Please E-Mail Donna if you would like to carpool. And it would look nice if we all wore our UUC T-Shirt or Standing on the Side of Love T-Shirt.

If you would like to have a hand in the many projects the Economic Justice Team is undertaking, please  email Donna .
