Rev. Abhi Janamanchi

Message from Rev. Abhi Janamanchi
Abhi at GA 2009

I am only one

But still I am one

I cannot do everything,

But still I can do something

And because I cannot do everything

I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.

                              ~ Edward Everett Hale

This week, the nation watched anxiously as Hurricane Sandy left a trail of destruction, devastation, and death across the Atlantic coast from North Carolina to Maine killing 55 people and doing billions of dollars in damage.  Millions are without power, thousands are in shelters, and the National Guard continues to search for stranded survivors.

It was heartening to see leaders who are normally acting as political adversaries set aside their differences and demonstrate substantive cooperation.   I am glad they found the capacity to come together to deal with a crisis.  And I am grateful for government agencies and personnel who are out there helping people in need.  Local, state, and federal are doing what no other institution could have done with such speed, preparedness, and funding.

Rachel Christensen: Connections
Rachel Christensen

I think that as human beings we are hard-wired for community. We need connections with other people. We need to give and receive love and care. We need friendships. We need to be needed.

In our spiritual home here in Clearwater, many find that one of the most important reasons for being here is our created community.

And so, I think of the person coming for the first time to our worship service.

Radical Hospitality Redux

Hospitality?  What does it mean to you?  What does it mean to you as a UU?  What does it mean to us at UUC?  Is the concept of hospitality something we can't quite put a name to, but we understand it when we feel it?  And if we have this understanding, does that mean feeling it internally makes us better able to offer it externally to others?  Read on and ponder what radical hospitality may mean.

For those of us interested in history, the word hospitality has a fascinating background........

Readers Forum

On Friday, November 2nd we conclude our discussion of The Lemon Tree by Sandy Tolan.

On Friday, November 9th, we begin a discussion of A God Who Hates by Wafa Sultan.  Dr. Wafa Sultan, a Syrian-American ex-Muslim, has become a force radical Islam must reckon with. For the first time, she tells her story and what she learned, first-hand, about radical Islam in A God Who Hates, a passionate memoir by an outspoken Arabic woman that is also a cautionary tale for the West.

Before attending the November 9th session, please read to the start of chapter 8 of A God Who Hates.

Reader's Forum is led by Catherine & John Conover. We meet every Friday 10:00-11:30 AM in the Chorale Room of the UUC Octagon. It is free, with only asuggested donation for coffee. All are welcome. For more information, go to http://uuclearwater.org/content/ReadersForum.htm

New Member Recognition

Join your fellow UUs to welcome new members. On Dec 2, 2012, at 10:30 a.m.  A special celebration marks our newest members' entry into our covenant community. In addition to our formal introduction of new members in the Octagon, we also celebrate with cake during social hour afterward!
Our embrace and formal welcome of new members is a time-honored custom for Unitarian Universalists. The event provides an opportunity for all members to come together and for our newest members to join the congregation and start calling the Octagon home. For visitors and guests, the ceremony is a wonderful way to observe our covenant community.

November!! I can't believe it's November, and folks in other parts of the country are recovering from a hurricane. Hope everyone had a Green Halloween. This is a good time of year to be working in your garden in Florida - neither too hot nor too cold. If you don't have a garden, but would love to have some fresh vegetables and fruits, contact First Fruits Hydroponics, 3215 46th Av N in St Petersburg, 727-492-8908, or go to their FaceBook page or their website.

The next Environmental Justice/Green Team meeting will be November 17th. Hope many of you are planning to join us for Thanksgiving dinner on Nov 22nd. Giving thanks as a community is a delightful way to celebrate the holiday.

Economic Justice

Thanks to everyone who contributed beans, rice, and gently used childrens' books for the farm workers in Plant City. We will be distributing them with Maria McCourt of the National Farm Worker's Ministry on Sunday, November 4th. We'll be leaving from the parking lot right after services on Sunday if you would like to join us. It can be a transformative experience-one of the most active members of the Economic Justice Team said her work with the committee dates from the time she first saw for herself what the camps are like.

Don't forget to mark your calendar for the Pinellas Support Committee's Annual Sacrificial Soup Supper on November 17th at 5:30pm at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 3200 North McMullen Booth Rd (opposite the hospital).  The speaker will be Dr. Raymond Arsenault.  Donations will support farm workers in Florida.

If you would like to have a hand in the many projects the Economic Justice Team is undertaking, please join us at our next meeting, November 13th at 10:30 in the Westwood Room at UUC. Not available days?  email Donna
