Message from Joe Myers and the Architect Search Committee |
We started out interviewing eight architects with a goal of selecting the three best. When we came down to it, the candidates were so good, that we had four, and couldn't decide which one to drop, so we did second interviews for all four. Of course, we were looking for a local architect that was innovative. But we were looking also for an architect whom we felt would best understand our needs and who would understand our ethos. We were looking for an architect who was a good listener and could communicate well back to us. All of the final four had these attributes in varying degrees, and we feel that the one we chose had the best combination. The competition was close, and the Task Force took about 1 ½ hours of discussion about them last Sunday to arrive at our conclusion. Each was discussed thoroughly, and in the end, all of us felt very comfortable with the selected architect and his firm. His name is Kenneth Cowart, and his firm is ASD, Inc. from Tampa. The process will be in two architectural phases. The first phase is to produce a schematic of floor plan, elevation and perspective view of the design. It will be divisible into three financial levels. In January, you, the congregation, will be asked to pick the level to go forward with. The second phase will be to create construction specifications. I will be introducing Ken to you on Sunday, October 21st, the day of our special congregational meeting. I'll be in the social hall after services to answer any questions you might have. |

Fiesta Cooks Needed: Will You Help? |
At our fund-raising auction we are going to prepare a wonderful and creative meal to serve 200 people. It's going to take a lot of work and we need as much community support as possible. There are a variety of unique and exciting opportunities to participate, ranging all the way from fun cooking parties, to simply storing food in your refrigerator. Imagine the opportunity for fellowship and discussion as we work toward a wonderful South of the Border experience. In this way you can support our fund-raiser even if you don't go to the auction. The cooking parties will take place either at the home of Ann Myers (near UUC in Clearwater) or that of Joe Weinstein and John Ferguson in Safety Harbor. More information, contacts, and schedule |

Who Was This Lady Who Keeps Saving Lives Even Though She Lost Hers?
|

She was Florence Cohan-Austin, a long-time member of the Miami UU before meeting the love of her life, Vic Austin, and moving to St. Pete. Many know Vic from his magic shows and face-painting for our children at UUC events. Vic stood by Florence through her long and painful battle with cancer. The cancer returned five times, and she lost her battle in 2008. Florence was one of our most active UUCare Bears and made me promise during her last week of life that our Cares & Concerns Committee would continue to host a blood donation drive every year.
So many of you have supported it. Each year we seem to have more donors than the year before. Let's keep breaking our own record. Sign ups begin this Sunday.

UUC is Awarded a Community Award
Congratulations to the volunteers who work in the UUC Hispanic Preschool Project at the Hispanic Outreach Center on receiving the "Amigo Award" for outstanding voluntarism and support for the Intercultural Advocacy Institute (Hispanic Outreach Center). The award was presented to Linda Stoller, Barbara Brandt, Donna Polhamus and Sue Thornton at the Hispanic Outreach's annual open house on October 16th.
For the past year, every Thursday morning this group of UUC volunteers work with about ten preschoolers and their moms to expose the children to English and develop age appropriate skills so that they will be successful in school.
If you are interested in learning more about this rewarding community outreach program, contact Linda Stoller.
