Spring Cleanup:
Tips and Permit Info
Chances are this glorious spring weather has you or others outside sprucing up your Upper Makefield home. Our Planning and Zoning Department compiled this list of common spring maintenance and permitting needs in Upper Makefield.
Safe Line of Sight. When trimming bushes near your driveway, follow this safety triangle tip to keep a safe line of sight for yourself and others driving from your home:
 |
Roadway (top) and Driveway (perpendicular) Sight Clearance Triangle
|
1. Sketch a triangle with a point starting at the center of your public road.
2. Extend two points 75 feet each to the right of the roadway centerline.
3. From the roadway centerline, measure back 30 feet toward the driveway.
4. The area of your property covered by the triangle created must be trimmed to a safe height of 2.5 feet (30 inches) or less.
Check Fences and Gates. Take a few minutes to walk the perimeter of your property and its fences, checking for loose boards and hardware. Replace, lubricate, and repair where needed.
Permits Required? New fences, pools, paver patios, outdoor fireplaces, and more require permits. Download our permit packages or call 215-968-2868.
Yard Waste from Trimming? You will need to contract with a private hauler to take it away. Our website offers a list of private haulers who serve Upper Makefield residents or check with your Homeowner's Association.
If you have questions, please contact Phyllis Mehler, Wendy Mecke, or Dave Kuhns in our Planning and Zoning Department.

Riparian Plan Earns EAC
Land Ethics Award
Members of Upper Makefield's Township Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) are rightly proud of their 2013 Certificate of Achievement from Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve, recognizing the council's strong land ethic and pointing to the EAC's "outstanding promotion" of native plants.
The award cites as example the EAC's Riparian Restoration and Preservation Grant Program.
Tree Grants Still Available
Upper Makefield Township offers grants of up 12 trees at up to $25 per tree to residents who plant regionally native trees. Make the most of the spring planting season with this program. Additional information:

Snapchat More Permanent Than Your Teen May Think
Keeping in contact with friends and family online can become a source of headache and regret when children and teens don't understand the permanent, public nature of online activity.
Snapchat is a new photo-sharing app for iPhone and android operating systems that allows the user to send photos that the recipient can view for a predetermined time frame set by the sender. Then, the photo disappears. Think of it as a self-destructing photo. However, the recipient can take a screen shot of the photo to keep, use, or post at their discretion.
Talk about risky online behavior
Misusing the app is dangerous not only for the content shared: Snapchat's presumed short life can encourage teenagers to engage in risky behavior that they may think is inconsequential.
We encourage parents to research Snapchat and all social media applications that their children use, and to communicate openly with them about the consequences of each form of communication.
If you have any questions, or if we can be of any assistance, please contact the Upper Makefield Township Police Department at (215) 968-3020.
Here's a profile of our Upper Makefield Police Department, where you'll also find more safety tips and resources for you and your family.
