News You Can Use        October 2013

Greetings!

FAWCO Friendship Quilt 2014- Deadline approaching!

Our new Target Program is Women's Rights. The rights we enjoy in developed countries open to us "a world of possibilities" - choices of all we care to achieve. Our foremothers in the 19th century, deprived of a political presence, often used quilts to express their aspirations for social change, and raise money to support what they believed in. The names of many traditional blocks (Temperance T, 54-40 or Fight, Tippecanoe and Tyler Too) illustrate causes they supported.

What rights would you fight to protect?

Here's an extremely simple block, Endless Stairs, which reminds us that we can never stop working for women's rights and for positive change.

This makes a block 8.5" square with seam allowance (8" finished size).

Endless stairs

  1. Cut a strip of medium or dark fabric 3" X 19". Cut a strip of light fabric 2" X 19". Seam together on the long edge to make a strip 4.5" X 19". Press the seam toward the dark side. Check that your strip really is exactly 4.5" wide!
  2. Cut from this strip 4 squares, each 4.5".
  3. Lay out the squares in 2 rows of 2 with the light strip towards the top. Rotate the top right and lower left ones a quarter turn so the light strip is to the left.
  4. Sew the squares together. The resulting block should measure exactly 8.5"
  5. Using an archive-quality permanent pen(I use Pigma 0.5mm, please DON'T use Sharpies), sign your name and the cause you think is worth a fight. Put it in one of the light strips so we can see it! The name of your club would be nice. Please use 100% cotton fabric, batiks if you're feeling generous, and your favorite color.

Deadline: October 10, 2013

                  The FAWCO Foundation

Dear FAWCO Reps and Regional Coordinators,

The FAWCO Foundation will launch its first ever," Let's Move The Foundation to the Future" donor campaign in November.  The purpose of the campaign is to solicit financial support for the Development Grants, Education Awards, NEEED, and Target 2-Human Rights for Women.

Your role is critical to the success of the campaign, but your participation is very, very simple!

We will send the campaign letter to each of you in a Constant Contact bulletin in the next few days.  When you receive the campaign bulletin, please ask your club's president's permission to send it to your club's members via email. We would be very grateful if the bulletin went out once in November and once in early December.

If your club has a monthly newsletter, a Word document will be available for insertion. It can be used for both electronic and print newsletters. This version of the bulletin will be on the FAWCO Foundation's website under the "Reps and RC's" tab at the top of the home page.

Thank you in advance for your time and assistance- we can't do it without you!

Does Your or Your Husband's Company Have a Matching Gift Program?

If yes, then it's most often a simple process. Usually the forms are on a companies internal website or you can contact the Human Resources Department.  The FAWCO Foundation EIN number is: 43 607 5073. A list of some qualified companies can be found on The Foundation's website.
